The ironic thing here is that in the 1979 Rose Bowl, the same Charles White took the handoff, headed for the goal line, got hit, lost the football but his body went into the endzone while the ball lay at the 2 yard line. They called it a touchdown. USC ended up winning the game 17-10. This is infamously called the Phantom TD.
I mean, better to have a botched call that's immediately corrected and ultimately doesn't have any impact on the game than one that enshrines a result that never should have happened. But yeah, this is what psychologists would call a 'perseverance error', a case where an ingrained and practiced behavior is performed in a context where it's not supposed to be. Happens to pretty much everyone. Almost got me a ticket once.

72 OAK at GB. Packers QB tries a quick pitch near OAK 5 yd line. He laterals it too hard & it bounces off the runner's hip into OAK's End Zone. Jack Tatum ran it back 102 yds for a TD & new NFL Fumble Return Record. A few days later the NFL admitted it should have been a non-returnable Muff but since points were scored they had to let the record stand.

I don't think a lot of people realize what is actually happening here. The ref. isn't saying that he crossed the goal line because he's got defective vision and thought his arms stretched all the way from the five yard line to the end zone. It's because the ref. THOUGHT that the FIVE YARD LINE WAS THE GOAL LINE. Look where he's standing. He's right at the five and he's watching it really intently to see if he crosses it. You can see the runner cross over the five yard line before being pushed back. Somehow the ref. got confused where he was on the field and thought that he had broken the plane of the goal line when it was just the five yard line. Guys, C'MON. I don't care how blind you are, no ref. could ever consciously think that you get a touchdown when getting tackled at the five.

@@matthewdaley746 It didn't matter if Bradshaw lied to them, everyone knew he was at the end of his career and Marino was the obvious correct pick. Gabe Rivera was a freak athlete for a DL and had shown promise before his unfortunate car accident, but Marino would have kept the Steelers as a SB threat for the rest of the 80's and well into the 90's.
@KevinT7274 There's zero reason not to take him, except, for his, "cocaine habit," which, if true, would have led, to, incarceration, (or, worse), in Miami, the Steelers have convinced themselves they didn't destroy their team with that decision, and, absolutely nobody believes them.

I'll go with the 2nd explanation. He had a momentary brain fart, and just lost his bearings of where he was. It's funny, but fortunately, a call that's easily corrected, and no harm, no foul. Now, if I'm not mistaken, there was a more egregious bad call that stood, also involving a game with the Jets. In 1998 I believe, Vinnie Testeverde "scored" a TD, when his white Jets helmet broke the plane of the goal line, but not the ball itself. I believe it was before replay came back, and the call stood, and played a big role in the Seahawks losing, and not making the playoffs.

I think there is, or was, another arm signal which had the referee raise both arms up parallel to each other. At the end of regulation the refs raise the ball up to signal, well the end of regulation. But if the ball could not be found, the touchdown signal could be used. I remember reading about a game, can’t remember if it was college or NFL, where this caused some controversy, when the game ended on a near touchdown.
