It doesn't take a rocket science degree to know that a giant, slow moving turtle gets annihilated by a character that can punch it faster than it has time to even do one move. But in a game with literally thousands of matchup combinations, there may be some that you would least likely expect is bad for some of the best characters like Fox, Steve, or Sonic. Here's my Top 5 matchups I know for a fact you didn't know were actually so bad for the better character.

Samus can out-hitbox a character like Duck Hunt though, and your damage is usually better move-for-move. Snake is a worse matchup for Samus imo because everything that's annoying about the Duck Hunt matchup is the same except his setups are deadlier and the character is just also better in all aspects

Idk if it really counts but Hero/Icies is probably one of the most unfair matchups in the entire series. Icies can't deal with almost every relevant spell Hero has, his Side B 2 is actually just turns off that character and Hero generates twice as much mana against Icies. Nana's knockback multiplier also makes her die unfairly early to some key Hero spells and back air. Most notably Nana will die at 0% to a 100 mana Magic Burst and SoPo really stuggles to fight Heros big laggy sword.

@@funjukebox1324 honestly I can see the incine pacman thing. most of pacman's projectiles are slow as shit so they're easy to revenge (key is fast but not nearly as frequent, gives incine time to get in). if pac decides to sit behind hydrant incine can pretty confidently approach, and just react to whatever pacman does since revenge heavily discourages hitting hydrant. also incine just generally out hitboxes pac when scrapping.

@@gj4312 Sheik has a losing matchup to IC's in every single game they've both been in despite how excellent Sheik's been throughout the series, even Melee Sheik who's a lot different from the other Sheik iterations loses to ICs in her game. Maybe it's just always gonna be like that with how they're designed, Sheik exchanges power for long, precise combo strings and character attributes that allow her to dance around her opponent in neutral, meanwhile, every iteration of ICs has had them murder a large portion of the roster up close with what might be the most consistently deadly punish game across the series, while also disrupting the gameplans and combo routes of a lot of characters with their two-fighter gimmick, and Sheik's pretty much never had any choice but to weave through the 5 billion hitboxes ICs can throw out in their threat bubble, she's never had the tools to easily separate them or abuse any blindspots the climbers may have (like what Melee Peach and Brawl MK liked doing against them). Sheik's not really the same type of character in Melee but she kind of has similar issues with Icies in Melee as she does in other games, can't separate them very easily, can't really keep them locked in disadvantage all that well, can't challenge all the hitboxes they throw out, and she has to win twice as many interactions because they of the strong punish game Climbers have against her.

One matchup I'm surprised to hear was bad was Robin vs. Little Mac. The big reason is that, apparently, Little Mac's dash low-profiles Thunder, which honestly sounds like a pretty huge deal. On the topic of Pac-Man, Lucario also does well against him, since Pac-Man's kit has a lot passive hitboxes that Lucario can freely proc Double Team on.

As a Pac player I don't think that matchup is bad at all, Pac-Man outboxes him heavily at low percent and can just prioritize confirming early kills with Bell which isn't super hard to do considering his shield pressure and camping aren't that great until he gets to really high percents, double team proc also isn't that big since you can react to it and it's heavily punishable, Pac wins the MU imo but it can be scary

Robin player here and i dont think we lose to Mac at all. Arcthunder fucks him up hard, you can camp.for charge and resources p easily and nair just defeats any intent of mixing up offstage. Mu might be really annoying in some stages when you dont have your resources (mainly fd and Hollow/sbf maybe?) but thats It I dont think Robin ftilt is as useful as the other comment says btw its just too laggy and stubby

As a mac player with a goof robin friend i may be biased or experienced in the mu, but robin has a difficult time keeping mac out sometimes if the mac is good at maneuvering. What i mean by ftilt is that robin ftilt and especially jab are getoff me tools for robin that work especially well against mac, due to his very linear approach which can be enforced with projectiles, also jab hits high so if mac tries to jump away he gets caught.

Oh yeah that is a huge deal. If robin can't thunder > dash attack or other bnbs, their neutral turns to shit. Especially on a fast character that can bait levin aerials and punish arcrfire at a greater distance. It's why robin mythra is an abysmal matchup. I think one of the worst in the game.

As a Diddy main, ik all about how ASS the DH mu is. The main problem is that Diddy struggles with zoners, but his normal saving grace is that banana is transcendent and can break zones. The problem with DH, and other characters like snake and pacman, is that their projectiles have hurt boxes, so they block banana, so Diddy can't break the zone. You have to either commit to monkey flip kick or shield, both of which are easily punished by DH.

Inkling is also pretty decent into Kazuya as well, because Roller trumps EWGF 100% of the time and buries Kaz when he tries to start a combo, and Inkling's air drift is so much higher that they can just evade every attempt at air-to-air that Kazuya tries.

Villager winning against Ness is an obscure one I advocate for. Pocket is killer in the MU, the edge guarding is brutal, and his zoning tools don’t allow many opportunities for Ness to get in and rack up damage. If you want a prime example, watch Kept vs Gackt, it seemed absolutely hopeless for Gackt haha

Other weirdly terrible matchups GnW/Rosa: Honestly not that surprising when you think about it, Rosa just out ranges him Olimar/Zelda: Zelda's reflector instantly removes pikmin, and phantom blocks pikmin Kazuya/Puff: Puff is really hard to combo for kaz, she low profiles electric, and she kills him at 3 off an edgeguard. MinMin/Puff: Also dies at 3 off an edgeguard, and puff's air shmoovement lets her dance around arms really easily.

I think a big part of that is how difficult it is to play inkling well. It is kinda like Wolf in that when inkling is playing well, they're untouchable. But other times, they'll play sloppy and just get blown up. Combine that with inkling not being very explosive, and it becomes a lot more uncommon to find truly threatening inkling players to represent matchups.

That's because most Yoshi players relies way too much on Fair, Bair and Nair to approach their opponents. A Yoshi that knows how to effectively use UpB, Ftilt, Uptilt, Downtilt, NeutralB, and even his grabs, shouldn't have such an issue approaching a character like Ganon. I'm saying that as a Yoshi player.

As a Pit main I think 2 good surprising matchups are Min Min and Steve. Granted I'm not a top level player. But Min Min is super easy to edgeguard, and Pit has a good dash attack to help close distance. As for Steve, whenever Pit is sent offstage he can still pressure Steve with arrows. Additionally the Orbitars are a surprisingly good tool to deal with Minecart, as they can stay out a while, and work whether steve is in the cart or not.

I've always loved pits good matchups vs top tiers cause nobody expects it, those two aren't ones I've particularly noticed above others, but orbitars are so nice vs Steve but I've always felt comfy vs rob as pit, big body unlocks pits drag downs being a little more consistent which means a lot. Pit can preemptivly call out robs jumping for nair really well with his own nair Pit can compete offstage with double jump mix ups so side b under ledge and other rob tricks aren't auto wins for him like against other characters Pit can pester rob stalling off stage with arrows and of course has a reflecter and a good projectile of his own so counter zoning is relatively easy

Cloud contests Ridley a lot easier, trades a lot more, Ridley struggles to get in more and set up off stage interactions, Cloud does much better offstage tbh, and Ridley is about as easy to combo and dies a lot earlier. It’s not Clouds best mu by any means, but as a Cloud player, it’s not nearly as bad as you might think. He also gets gimped and edge guarded extremely easily by Falco, Wolf, Robin, Bowser, Villager, just to name a few. Ridleys main struggle is getting in as he doesn’t have a burst option as fast and lagless as DK and can’t carry Cloud offstage easily or juggle him

Kirby does weirdly well against a bunch of top tiers. He pretty much goes even with: Fox, Roy, Palu, Falcon, Brawler, Terry, Sheik, Mario, Peach, Hero, Pikachu, Wolf, Sephiroth, Joker, Wario, Min Min, Ness, and Lucina. Kirby's big problem is that he goes even with a bunch, but he doesn't really beat any top tiers and loses very hard to about a half dozen (G&W, Pac Man, Snake, Yink, Shulk, Sonic, and Samus).

k inkling vs snake: no chip damage from grenade hitting you cause you can dash under same with c4 on platforms, and when snake is inked grenade trades are drastically in inklings favour because snake is taking more damage. splatter shot explodes grenades from a far and huge window for upthrow up air. i think snakes worst

I find the surprisingly bad matchup topic to be interesting. I don't know many match ups in this game myself, I am not that competitive with the game. The Fox and Kirby one was a surprise to me cause I still think it's goofy how Luigi can lose to Belmonts and shit below him but also win against Fox. I am curious tho, are there any characters where Pyra is scarier to fight than Mythra? I always felt Little Mac was one of those, but I could be wrong

Villager/Yoshi. Villager's projectiles are very linear and weak, making it very easy for Yoshi to jump over them or armor through and rush villager down, which is a huge weakness for villager

From what I know Jigglypuff has a horrible matchup against Piranha Plant. Jigglypuff is the quintessential airial spam character and Piranha Plant is basically just antiair the character. Any time Jigglypuff tries to get in you can just press B and you immediately trade for like 17 damage on her, and she’s much lighter so the trades only benefit the plant. Also poison cloud for some reason has collision with snake’s grenades and olimars pikmin, meaning you can’t throw projectiles at plant if she’s inside the smoke. So those matchups are hard for piranha plant but I think easier than people would think.

Pit v. Captain falcon is also pretty bad. Pit's floaty so he loses especially bad in disadvantage, he's slow so his advantage and neutral are terrible in this mu. Then, take into account he has no consistent easy way to knock falcon out of raptor boost (nair=no, fair=no at most ranges, bair only works on tipper, filt on works on tipper, and nothing else comes close), and all jumping can get punished on reaction. Falcon just walks all over pit and sure, pit can try edgeguarding, but falcon and stomp are about as good when you factor in falcon dive drift.
