So funny thing about the Wii Mini and it's super niche desirability, I work at a local retro game store here in Canada and shortly after I started working the government of Canada approved the Wii Mini as an item a prisoner can bring in with them/have dropped off so you can imagine my surprise when one day on my shift the phone starts ringing and the caller ID shows it's from a correctional facility. I pick up the phone and ask if there's anything I can help out with and it's the manager asking if we had any Wii Minis in stock because (I phrase I never thought I'd hear) "the prisoners are going crazy for the Wii Minis and we can't get enough of them" and from that day forward literally EVERY call we get about Wii Minis is someone asking for one for a Pen Pack (a searched and approved gift for an inmate) and funnily enough they always ask for the God father game on the Wii and the Scarface game too. So in retrospect hey the Wii mini is kinda neat because it's super loved by prisoners lol, PS1s are also popular too.

fun fact about the wii mini: there was actually one more thing nintendo removed from the wii mini: the capacitors for filtering component video. that meant that, even if you had the component av cables, you couldn’t even use them, and were forced to use the included composite cables. it also meant that if you owned a third party hdmi adapter, you couldn’t even use that.

N2DSXL is the definitive 3DS for softmodders, purely because of the fact that the microSD slot is right next to the game slot. It's got the same power as the N3DSXL, but it's so nice not having to take the backplate off just to access the microSD. The Flap also means that the slots survived the years of leaving it to sit in a drawer and collect dust. Also, the special editions are the best special edition consoles we've gotten imo. For someone like Scott who only plays games and I presume played a lot on the other consoles, it can be a clear downgrade but to any person it feels fine. And it fixed a ton of issues with the 3ds (like the sd card placement) and is the definitive system for modding like u mentioned. I modded mine to the brim and it’s sick, would’ve took like 4x as long with a normal 3ds with the only benefit being a “better feel” and the 3ds function which many didn’t use towards the end of the consoles life.

Its probably aimed at people that don't like second hand items for the lack of warranty or similar. At least for me if it has a screen I prefer buying things new just to ensure there aren't any scratches on the display and that I can return it in case of dead pixels or similar without any hassle. My Samus Aran New 3DS XL actually had that problem where there was dust trapped from the factory between the lens and the display, and I had to RMA it. But for consoles where small issues like scratches don't matter? Better to just get a refurb or a warehouse deal or similar.

Sony's American division handled the PSP Go horribly in general, they refused to stop shooting themselves in the foot over it because of greed. The thing never received any price cuts (intentionally) and it was bundled with 3 digital games in the USA (all of them greatest hits titles that you could not avoid as used at the time). Meanwhile Europe still had an expensive console, but they did get a whole 13 games bundled, to which my understanding is that they were all Platinum titles as well. At the very least the argument between a cheaper used 2004 or 3004 and a new Go would have been "you don't need to carry these 13 highest-selling games you'll probably buy anyway, with their easily destroyed UMD shells." Sony of America had increased the price of the PSP 2000 for the North American market prior to this: it was cheaper in Japan compared to the domestic price of the older 1000 model, but they were both the same price in North America. Ultimately, they wanted you to pay full price for a new digital only console that could literally only play full price digital games in a generation where most of the games were not available digitally, and even if they were, the cost of the _previous_ generation of their memory format was already a gateway to a substantial library at the time. The thing was designed around the M2 card, Sony's third form factor revision of the MemoryStick card, which __never__ stopped costing an arm and a leg __ever__ - the capacities were atrociously small, and you couldn't even bank on memory density being worse but the flash chip itself at least having the grace of being huge. The Go has 16GB of flash on board and if you didn't shell out $100USD at the time to buy what probably amounted to 16GB, you had no extra storage. Most games weren't licenced for digital sale either, so you were restricted to titles from around 2008 and beyond outside of Sony's own published software, most if not all of which have been released on PSN as far as I'm aware.

When my wii broke in 2013 I replaced it with a wii mini, just because it was cheap and I was a broke teenager. I wasn’t very happy when I realised I couldn’t play online, back then all the games’ servers were still up and that so it was the main appeal for some games! I also really missed using my GameCube controller, I didn’t play GameCube games on the Wii very often but I used the controller on any games I could. I eventually gave it to a friend and bought an original wii second hand, but I felt very cheated by the wii mini. Obviously I should have done more research, but generally I just think it was missing too many features. For people who just wanted to play Wii sports or whatever it’s grand, and nowadays it’s probably fine as well since online play isn’t really accessible anymore, but at the time it really took a lot of value out of some games for me.

The 2DSXL was a decent option in Europe, due to us having the small New 3DS as opposed to the New 3DSXL. It was really hard to get here, and if you did it would be an imported one, meaning there were regional shop issues. So if you wanted a "New" handheld with a big screen, the only real option was the 2DSXL.

The SNES Junior has one redeeming quality. When modded for component video output, it actually provides the sharpest pixel quality to the signal compared to other SNES models. Obviously for CRT output it really doesnt matter, but when paired with an HD scaler like a RetroTink, its definitely noticeable.

My favorite thing about the Wii Mini was that when Club Nintendo was shutting down Da Boyz over on /v/ figured out how the serial numbers were incremented so you could create a family account with eight members, each of whom did the survey for a Wii Mini and got you 100 coins a pop, allowing you to get a code for the games they had in their closing sale or physical merch. I swept up all the 3DS games they were offering and that Majora's Mask messenger bag. Times were good.

I think the Wii Mini was quite cute and good for casual players who didn't have the Wii yet. Smaller, colourful, and cheaper (especially the bundle with Mario Kart). The Wii Mini came out December 2012, and all Wiis lost internet support May 2014, so good on Nintendo for not making internet connection a selling point. As for GameCube support, GameCube games were and still are pricy. The target audience of the Wii Mini, that is to say people who didn't have a Wii, probably would not have a GameCube collection at all and be buying from the Wii hype to play with their family/friends.

Disagree on Nintendo cutting internet support being a good thing. The Wii Mini would’ve been way more enticing to buy if it still maintains the internet access, considering that there’s still services like KZbin, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. that were still running up until 2019 (2017 for KZbin), and Call of Duty servers were still up until like last year. Like Scott said in his Console Redesign episode, if the Wii Mini had internet support and an HDMI port, it would’ve been a huge hit as a 2-in-1 streaming box + game console
@ninjaydes3 ай бұрын
@@Northgical Neat, but the Wii U launched before the Wii Mini, including internet support and HDMI... and its sales were not hot. In general, Nintendo makes varied consoles to fit a variety of buyer niches, and somehow having extra features made it still a hardcore Nintendo fan-only console.
@Northgical3 ай бұрын
@@ninjaydes Those aren’t the reasons why Wii U failed though, it was combination of poor marketing and games coming out on it not really utilizing the Wii U Gamepad to it’s fullest, doesn’t really have anything negative to do with internet support and HDMI integration. and Wii U as a console was never really a “for hardcore fans” kind of console imo, that title goes more towards the GameCube.

@@Northgical Internet support and HDMI obviously did not cause the Wii U to fail, but they couldn't salvage the console into success. By extension, we don't know that incorporating HDMI/internet into Wii Minis would increase their sales noticeably at a profit for Nintendo.

The flap does a good job of stopping dust from getting into the cartridge slot and it makes it easier to replace the SD card, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if Nintendo only put that flap there to create parity with the Nintendo Switch. The New 2DS XL actually got a huge price cut and only costed $100 before Nintendo stopped producing them. I picked up a 2DS XL back in 2020 because I never got the chance to experience anything 3DS until I had the money myself, and by 2020 Nintendo mostly stopped producing New 3DS XLs, so my local Walmart only had 2DS XLs in stock (and 3DS systems were starting to be resold for $250+ at this point). So, $100 to experience the entire 3DS library (and free MK7) is honestly a really good value IMO. Yes, the console feels cheaper and things like the stylus are placed in really funky places, but I love this system nonetheless for its affordability. I do agree that $150 is wayyyy to steep especially if the New 3DS XL was $200, but for $100 I think the New 2DS XL earns its keep as the "middle-of-the-road" 3DS.

Surprised the NES Top Loader didn't make the cut, weird hump, orange buttons, the cartridge sticking out as long as the console, and the wishbone controller.
@tidepoolclipper86573 ай бұрын
Obviously the NES cartridge is significantly bigger than the Famicom cartridge. Honestly, though, at least I don't have to worry so much about ruining the pins of the games. The Japanese version of NES Top Loader (Famicom AV) has a flat surface instead for the cartridge slot. Personally I think it looks even blander than the North American unit. I'll defend the Top Loader from a mechanic standpoint, but I can't do it so much in terms of looks unlike with SNES 2. The main NES controller is iconic, but let's be honest it does have a bad habit of digging into your hands. The wishbone controller deserves more credit. The only other NES controller I'd personally use would be Origin8 due to the bottom corners being rounded out and it being 2.4ghz wireless. Aside from ditching the hard-wired controllers and there being no need for it to work with the abandoned Disk Drive anyways, the main NES itself deserves to be labeled as a bad revision. While the Analogue NT is the superior slimmed down NES, the problem is that it's currently not being made any further.

For around the price of a used (more functional) wii and a used (possibly scratched) disc at gamestop, to get a new console plus that same game is a good deal. It's at least better than deca sports or whatever was in the bundles with a wii mote (for 10 extra dollars). You'd have to pay me to play that game for an hour. And mariokart is the most essential wii game to have for a 4 person party-game session. It's better than mario parties that were on wii, and more family/noob friendly than smash bros brawl. If you're into putting custom firmware onto consoles the PSP Street and Wii Mini are actually kind of fascinating. @leonro3 ай бұрын
Honestly, I don't really get why someone would want to emulate games on their game console. You have more developed emulators for your PC/phone that also contains better hardware. Handheld consoles I do kind of get, since you get to play on the go with a proper controller, but you can still attach reasonably good controllers to your phone nowadays. Now, as for "backup games"... There's nothing like running the software on native hardware, as you get the exact form factor they were meant to be in, and the same hardware features. DS, 3DS, Vita, Wii and Wii U in particular require the hardware to get the proper experience if you don't want to go out of your way to set up something complicated.
