As mentioned in the previous video, I'm currently in a rental situation until my house can be repaired from the hurricane. Could be 6-12 months. But LGR things continue in the meantime, as normally as I possibly can! For a bit of behind-the-scenes here, this episode was _very_ close to not happening at all. This boxed console and my entire PS2 collection was _right below_ where the trees crashed through my home during the hurricane, in the room that became a wet moldy mess. By pure chance I had moved all this PS2 stuff closer to the door for easy access since I was planning on making this video soon... and if I hadn't, then all this stuff would've been where a ton of nasty storm water leaked in through the busted ceiling. It would've been ruined. Crazy how things randomly work out sometimes.

Things like this create stories to tell, we grow and we change. I pretty much jumped for that play button when I saw you upload dude, was missing me some wood grainy heaven! All things a side though, props for making it through what can only be an unimaginable/uncontrollable experience in which you survived. As you've said many times, things are just things but, they hold a story.

Also, Katamari Damacy's creator had an exhibit at the Jepson Art Museum in Savannah, GA a few years ago. It was interactive and you could view his drawings and notes on his games. It was absolutely beautiful!

Funny story about when I got my PS2 as a kid, my grandma had me clean the entire house every time I was over to visit. One random week when I got done she said I did a great job and wanted to take me to Kmart and let me get whatever I wanted. I figured I would call her bluff and asked for a PS2, she said that was fine. When we got there, she actually let me get one! The amount of joy that came over me was overwhelming. I spent the better part of the year seeing so many ads and hearing my friends talk about the games, BUT I FINALLY HAD ONE! However..... she didn't let me get any games, only the console, so I was still limited to my PS1 library for the next month or so before I was able to convince my parents to buy me my first PS2 game. Fond memories booting up that PS2 over and over just to see that boot screen.😊😊

I was literally playing Gran Turismo 4 on a wheel setup when I went to watch the video. What a fantastic game, the unlock requirements forcing you to get intimately familiar with an every-day commuter car and gradually work your way up to sport and tuner car legends. The PS2 has a ridiculously stacked game library. Metal Gear Solid 2 still feels relevant with its themes today. San Andreas is filled with details to make it feel like a realized simulation of a fictionalized California. Glad to see you're doing well, and thank you for your videos.

The last console I owned was as a kid when I was gifted a Sega Master System in '91 for Christmas. It wasn't until 2007 I bought a PS2 Slim - and that was just to play GT4. I think I grabbed a few other used games, but GT4 was it - my whole reason for the PS2. Still have the console itself, the game, and the memory card with my cars on it. I'll have to dig it out!

First of all, welcome back! Those launch PS2 units (The SCPH-30001 models) are honest to god *lemons.* They are notoriously the most prone to the dreaded 'Disc Read Error' issue, and even when you can get a unit that works, often have the worst load times. I remember my local friend had a launch unit and whilst it could still read discs, it could often take up to MINUTES on end for it to read the disc before it became playable. Not surprised at all that your unit you got there already appeared to be on its way out, though it practically corrupting was not what I expected. The SCPH-39001 models that came out afterwards are (in my honest opinion) the *best* of the original 'Fat' models to go for. They certainly must've over engineered it after the whole 'Disc Read Error' stuff, because honest to god out of those particular models I've owned over the years, they are practically *tanks,* I've never come across a unit of those that DIDN'T work. Still my main unit to this day. Though the fans on these units are often just as loud, if not in some particular cases *louder* than the original units, which is the main downside. The SCPH-50001 models are a lottery, honestly. You either get units that work exceptionally well (such as yours), or you get those where the laser has quickly burnt itself out due to a design flaw with the 'Mechacon' chip that could cause it to crash if it attempts to read a badly damaged disc (or games burnt onto a backup disc if the console were modded) on those particular models (the initial PS2 Slim model SCPH-70001 units suffer from this same problem.) Thankfully the retro modding scene has chips that you can solder onto the boards of these units to address this issue to prevent it from burning out your laser. Its a real shame, because they optimized the load times even greater on these particular units and had relatively quiet fans on them. Still an amazing console nonetheless with SO many fantastic games to play on it.
@GUCFan
@GUCFan 18 сағат бұрын
Can definitely vouch for the 39001, those are just tanks and won't die. I only have one 50001 and i've done MechaPWN on it but yeah, its definitely having troubles reading PS1 games or audio CD's, i really need to swap the laser on that one to get it to read CD's again. Just hope it won't be a repeat of my sister's PS3 where i swapped the laser and it wouldn't read Blu-Ray's, DVD's or CD's at all and i had to just swap the entire drive out.

Hey just a PSA on the insanely long load times on 300001 models. Look into PMAP calibration. It's a lot of work but I did it myself and my PS2 reads discs so fast I don't even see the bios menu pop up it jumps straight into the game, it's pretty wonderful

I still have my launch unit from when I was young. Yeah, it doesn't load any DVD discs anymore. But who uses the disc drive these days, anyway? I'd say the bigger problem for me is that the vibration has died in it. I hear there's a fuse somewhere to replace, I imagine a little surface mount one like the DSLite. But I haven't looked in to it.

21:37 This part just literally makes me cry. I remember the snowy blizzard of christmas 2005 (snow just wants to kill you in Finnish winters), when our dad connected the PS2 for me and my two little sisters. It was almost midnight, we were under blankets and the hearth was hissing in the corner of our living room. Parents went to sleep, we had the whole night. We had tens of games we haven't ever heard about because we we're 7-10 yo (even Silent hill 2-3 and Fatal frame to think about it hah, nightmares). I will never ever forget the moment when i first saw that starting screen, i will forever treasure that memory.

I have a memory similar to that with my Sega Saturn. It was Michigan winter though, not Finnish. And a few years earlier. When it went on clearance after being discontinued, my grandparents got one for me, and one for my cousin for Christmas. And an assortment of games (I think maybe 7 each?). I lived in front of that TV until I had to go back to school. For me, Christmas is now inseparably linked to Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. I feel compelled to play it every year when it starts to snow. It's actually snowing right now.. Croc season is upon us.

My parents really got me good one Christmas. I was obsessed with Jak 2 and 3, literally went to other people's places just to play it as much as I could. I BEGGED for them. My parents got me the games, but kept it a surprise by nesting them in several boxes, the last one being an empty diaper cardboard box. On Christmas day I unwrapped the box wondering what the hell it could have been, I saw the logo and immediately shouted "YOU GOT ME DIAPERS?", my parents immediately broke down laughing, told me to keep going. Finally got to two DVD sized presents, and lowe and behold! Long ass story but figured you'd get a kick out of it. I still have them to this day!

The main thing I miss from this gen, split screen couch co-op. Me and the missus used to buy every game that would have local co-op. You rarely get that experience anymore with new games and consoles. Its all online co-op, which isn't close to being the same when you're not sat together on the same sofa looking at the same screen. Closest thing is co-op on the Switch.

@RainMakeR_Workshop

@@davidsentanu7836 Yeah but its understandable why. It was overpriced, underpowered, didn't have enough launch games, didn't get enough 3rd party games and was very poorly marketed. Pretty much every 3rd co-op game available was available on other (better) systems and most of the Nintendo made games have come to the Switch. Which to be fair, as I said, me and the missus do play Switch co-op. And the Switch likely owes its creation to the Wii U's failure.

My brothers and I got a Playstation 2 for Christmas 2001, when I was thirteen. It was our first proper game console after years and years of just playing PC games and parents who refused to get us a console until all of a sudden, to everybody's surprise, they did! What an amazing experience. Playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Final Fantasy X, and Gran Turismo 3 was such a trip, a completely different and cinematic experience compared to our low-budget PC gaming prior to that. I really don't think gaming has hit the heights of the sixth-generation consoles. So many PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox games are still tons of fun today. It'll be fun playing those classics with my kids when they're a little older and ready for games.

Glad to see you doing well! Back in May I got a Ps2 silver slim like my childhood one - but refurbished and a fixed laser... Would love to get my hands on an original Ps2 though for the pure nostalgia since my brothers had the original. Love these unboxing videos, I rewatch them all the time! :)

Fuck man I turned 35 two days ago and i did NOT need reminding that the PS2 is 24. Thanks for the nostalgia/existential dread as always Clint! Also I remember the reason my parents got theirs (I still have it at their place in my old bedroom) is because my dad convinced my mum it was a 'DVD player you could play games on' haha

This takes me back. I ordered my PS2 from Sony's website and had it shipped direct to my apartment. I didn't have any PS2 games for it when it arrived so all I could do was unbox it, hook it up, and listen to the launch screen and stare at it in awe. Of course it didn't take me long to figure out I could play PS1 games and DVD movies in it too, but I still went out and bought Madden that night so I had ONE single PS2 game to play!

11:00 I'm sitting here watching this and I thought "Wait.... I don't think my PS2 has that port?" And I went and looked and lo and behold it doesn't! Mine only has the 2 USB ports in the front there under the memory card and controller ports..... but no firewire! Makes me think this unit is a later model because I got mine for the holidays in 2000, so it was an OG first version. Still works too! Husband currently has it hooked up to the DDR pads he built, but it's still chugging with zero signs of stopping!

firewire port was actually removed in the newer versions (it was used very rarely). if you don't have the firewire, you probably have a quieter fan and a built in receiver for the remote

The jump from PSX/one to PS2 was mind blowing. Characters actually kind of looked like humans, instead of whatever PSX Hagrid in Sorcerer's Stone or Solid Snake in MGS1 were, plus the scope of games was immense. You couldn't have done a GTA San Andreas on PSX. Being able to play DVD movies instead of VHS? That was huge in the early 2000s, that alone sold a lot of PS2s back in the day. Having a top tier console and a for the time high-definition format movie player was genius on part of Sony. PS3 was in a lot ways just a fancier PS2, in terms of marketing strategy.

I still remember when Katamari Damacy came out, I bought it brand new on a whim because it looked weird and cool. I then proceeded to take it to my friend's house and him and his pothead roommates were completely entranced for like 4 hours watching me play it and just bathing in the zen-ness of it. Ahh, good times. Still have that copy and treasure it today.

Omg, lgr is back. Hope all is good considering what happened 🥰 This brings back alot of memories. My parrents thought the first playstation was to expensive. So i saved up money to buy one myself, then when the ps2 was announced i skipped it and saved up for the ps2. So it was my first playstation and that felt amazing to own such a powerful gaming console at home. But then it was also my first dvd player, so even later consoles were much more powerful. This is still one i remember as a huge step forward, since i was going from a commondore 64 and a VHS machine. Still remember when i put on gran Turismo and just sad there almost in shock over the graphics.

I have those blue stands, both vertical and horizontal. They really complete the look of PS2, which is still the most beautiful-looking console ever, in my opinion. I also have that DVD remote. Fun fact: Later units didn't need that IR adapter in the controller port to use it because they had it built in. You can see all that stuff in some of my videos (good quality and professionally produced).

The PS2 is still my all time favorite console launch, because not only I was excited about the PS2 console itself, but I remember my shopping mall hosted an event by Sony of America with dozen PS2 demo kiosks outside of a Target anchor store inside the mall! I got Timesplitters because of its multiplayer mode, then I bought DVDs from FYE in the mall because it was also our bedroom DVD player! It’s no wonder Sony PS2 won that generation, because of DVD playback and its exclusive games like Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy X, Jax and Daxter, Kingdom Hearts I & II, God of War!

My PS2 is currently the only working DVD-player in my household. Although I must admit it is my second unit. The first one the drive eventually gave up. One thing about the vertical stand - when the drive in those are near the end of their life and start to skip you can get a few extra months or years out of it by putting the console vertical. I do have the remote which still works but you give up one controller port by using it as it needs a IR dongle plugged in to function. Whoever chose to make all print on the remote dark dark dark gray on black needs to step on a lego brick. So many times watching movies have I had to try and hold up the remote to the light of the TV to even see what button I was pressing. But full marks for durability!

I can still feel the envy I had for my friend who had the PS2 back then, especially when GTA San Andreas came out. I would take every opportunity I had to hang out at his place just to play some more GTA or NFS. No amount of whining could convice my mom to get me a PS2, but I did manage to save up for an Xbox some time later and played the Xbox release of GTA when it came out. The PS2, the Gamecube and the Xbox always get me so nostalgic, those were some days man!

Great to see you again, Clint. This was great and really took me back. I remember getting a PS2 on UK launch, I did get the DVD remote. I never got the stand either, sadly. I did get the PS2 modded to play MGS 2 early (NTSC), that was quite a task. The PS2 had a great game library, but, for me, the Gran Turismo series peaked at GT4 and I moved to Xbox and Forza. But I'd love a new Ridge Racer game or HD collection of the older titles. Good times. And it's still a lovely looking console. Hearing and seeing the startup always takes me back, same with the PS1. For some reason, it makes me think of Ridge Racer V which was one of the games I got with my PS2 back in the day. Hope you are doing well, stay safe. Keep up the great work.

You can't tell that anything happened other than a sligh mention of it at the end. I'm so happy that you could do this video! I got a PS2 pretty late, I bought one after getting a backwards compatible PS3 because not every game was compatible. And got a couple of cool games, one game I really wanted to play was Lifeline and I was not disappointed, it was an amazing ride :) But the game that I really wanted the system for was Metal Gear Solid 3. MGS3 has analog buttons, when you are interrogating a patrolling soldier you can hold lightly to pressure the guy but if you press firmly Snake just slices through the guy.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane 🥹 glad to see a regular upload after all thats happened goad youre getting into a more comfortable place. Rental and Cafe, instant noodles and cup coffee and iced tea, everyone just having fun and being kids. To think that it is just as old as myself (released mere days after I was born), its crazy.
