We think the reason why characters like Sonic and Pac-Man get lame alt is because of the company who owns them. They probably don't want their mascots to change too much, to keep they recognizable. Especially Sega, who is known for being strict with Sonic at times.

Give Pac-Man different colored gloves/boots at least with different shades of yellow for the body. It would be hard to mistake him for anyone other than Pac-Man. Giving him the Sonic treatment would've been better than the dumb arm/leg bands. As a Pac-Man main, I think he has the worst alts in the game. Oven mitts alt is cute though at least.

Just look at IDW Sonic comics that IS an Official product, while the stories are much better than some of the games before Frontiers, the writers are given strict guidelines which lead to some characterization remaining slandered such as Shadow.

Honestly I'd say Pac-Man has it worse than Sonic. Sonic is at least different shades of blue with completely different shoe colors. They didn't even try with Pac-Man, and it negates the primary function of alts, to tell players playing as the same character apart, because they change so little on Pac-Man that you can barely tell them apart on a 1v1 match, let alone 4 player.

@@orangeslash1667 1. I think that's pretty stupid. 2. Even if Pac-Man HAD to stay yellow, they could've given each alt different hats and accessories that stand out more. Like obviously there's the hat he wears in Pac-Land, but they also could've done Super Pac-Man, the headphones he wears in the Pac & Pal art, the knight armor from Pac 'n Roll, the spacesuit he wears in Pac-Attack, alts based on Pac-Jr. and Professor Pac, etc.

@@jackiexkh That's not an option, you have to keep designs simple when doing advanced animation like transforming. Pac-man creator Toru Iwatani said that simplicity is what made the arcade so fun. While Iwatani wasn't involved in Smash, I suspect that Namco took his advice very seriously??? Forget what I said about Toc-man, I forget that his design was changed in the remake. I thought he stayed the same. The black alt reminds me of the Steel ball power up from Pac-man World.

Here is what the costumes suppose to reference. Purple is a reference to Nights. Cyan resembles classic, with the cuffs coming from Sonic Adventure. White is a reference to Silver, with the cuffs being a reference to the ark of the Cosmos from Sonic Free Riders. Yellow has Silver's yellow cuffs. Orange is a reference to the hand from Sonic 2. Green is a reference to the hand in the Knuckles edition of Sonic 2. Black is a reference to the Mirror fighter in Sonic the fighters.

That's odd because you have games like Dissidia NT which does have more unique alternate colors despite it being made by another company. It's also odd because in Cloud's case he could've had SOLDIER colors since he is wearing a SOLDIER outfit, so it wouldn't be that far off from the original.

Ngl and I know this is an unpopular opinion, I KINDA disagree with some of the alt criticisms. I get it but to me, Sonic IS the Blue Blur despite missed opportunites for character references so different colors feels kinda unneeded as well as Cloud and Sephiroth being colorful despite their original game doesn't really look right but it's all opinion. I think Sonic’s ones are fine. The rings on his wrist are distant with each variation like the glowing ones on his light blue variant (which I think is the coolest one imo), the purple ones being emeralds, and the silver one which idk what it’s supposed to be but I think it’s cool and it’s the one I use cuz I like to think it’s based off Silver the Hedgehog. I honestly don’t know how you can reference Sonic’s friends without it being bland or on-the-nose, and I’m open to the change but I think there’s nothing wrong with his current costumes. But of course his MOVESET is a different story, and I saw a comment that talked about Lucario’s skins and I couldn’t agree more. A lot of the cast just have bland recolors and I think it would be really cool if you could make your own recolours like in Rivals of Aether.
