Came close in Silverton Colorado - the Gold King mine was still producing when I was there in summer of 1972. There was an adit called the Terry Portal near an alpine peak above the mine that served as an emergency exit and for ventilation. There was also a small Alpine lake above the workings which broke through one night in 2015, flooding the entire mine, but sparing the miners fortunately. It was a huge mess and the mine was closed ... Well, it missed me by 40 years or so, but I remember the sounds of diesel engines running and seeing the shops and the powder magazines here and there, everything lit up and humming. Didn't run into anyone, but one could hear drilling in the distance. Didn't take anything but enjoyed the view....been in active mines before, but this one was creepy as it seemed like everyone just disappeared.....I wonder if the mine or the mill ever reopened?

My grandfather was a coal miner back in the early 1940s. My dad told me just a little bit about the kind of conditions in which he worked. The men who did that job back then were cut from a different cloth…. Right after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, grandpa enlisted in the navy, was a Seabee and saw action in Papua New Guinea…. Sustained injuries and suffered from malaria the rest of his life. Based on what my dad told me, I think grandpa probably figured that fighting the Japanese might’ve been the less dangerous job. The second story you told shocked me so much, at one point, I noticed my mouth was wide open…. The description of what happened to the passengers was horrific… Both stories left me in tears for the lost loves Thank you again for posting this….

@OfftheWallTales7 күн бұрын
Money. The grounds they could excavate were already essentially used up. So the only place any of the mines could go was under the river. It should’ve been safe, if they kept their distance. But I will say the… was it 35 feet or 35 meters? Either way, the distance between the shaft and the bottom of the river was way too little. A lake is one thing, but a river is an entirely different thing as it doesn’t stop moving and can vary in weight and height far more than a lake. EDIT: I meant to add that if you look at the map, the other mines were doing the same thing. Each mine had a land area that they owned and that was it. I’m guessing the river was kind of a free for all with no regulations.

The railroad cars (such as what's shown a 6:47) aren't gondolas but open hoppers. My grandfather was a coal miner here, but didn't work for Knox. The mining companies treated miners horribly as a rule. Growing up I heard many times that if a miner died during a work shift, they would leave the body on the family's front porch. And if the family lived in a "company house", the widow wS expected to move out, pay her debt at the company store, and arrange to bury her husband. Just horrendous. Great video as always--just one gripe from an old fogey--it's "LEE-high" valley, not "luh-HIGH." ( 6:37 ) I grew up there though I no longer call it home, lots of old mines and abandoned steelworks factories in that place. As kids we used to play in abandoned quarries and trespass on old industrial sites--we're lucky we made it to adulthood, and there were some close calls--parents just wanted you gone till supper in those days, not like now where kids are "maxxed out" on schedules. Thanks for the interesting look at two horrible disasters. This is why we need the kinds of regulation that a lot of the young people scoff at--"who needs a law for that"--corporations, that's who.

Have you ever done an episode on those horrible incidents when a few random people fell down garbage chutes in their apartment buildings, and were torn to shreds by the machinery at the bottom? I always thought that that would be a most horrible fate.

Story 1-6 Mining executives went to prison! What’s happening to our country when today, you rarely see anyone get jail time and the fines are usually small in comparison to the companies revenue. We need to return to the days when people who cause others such hardship get punished. Did any Boeing executive go to jail after those two 737 MAX planes crashed shortly after takeoff? I don’t think so EVEN though Boeing knew there was a problem. Hopefully today at least the wives would be much better informed and treated!

So... I live in germany, in the 60s there was a accident in an iron mine 29 men died and 11 were lost in a dead end. Took them 14 days to get them out. There is a germany movie about it but might be something for you to look into.... it would certenly fit this channel.

I remember trying to tell him there was a huge market for non-AI content when he started using it with the claim that he'd get "left behind" if he didn't. Hopefully the number of people celebrating it now that he's stopped again will be a lesson to other creators reading the comments! The longer AI is around the more people there are who decide they don't want it.

If you hear rich people that hate government regulations this is an example of why regulations exist. Companies will gladly trade human lives for profit any day of the week. When companies try to convince workers the government is in the way, it’s never for the workers’ benefit.

I was the son and grandson of NEPA miners and 14 years old at that time living in Plymouth, PA. I recalled anthracite coal mining still surviving. That flooding in the Wyoming Vallley mines basically killed it there. Two comments: there is still supposedly 200 years of atnthracite coal energy still underground in Pennsylvania, and, where did all those antique cars come from in 1959 in Wilkes-Barre???
