Tbf drag race wasn't as big as it is now back in the early 2010s lol, the name of the show got so many people confused for a car racing tournament (trust me, when I googled drag race without the name Rupaul, it only appears cars and actual drag race shows lol), which explained why some people they put in for the makeover challenge looked confused and uncomfortable, some was even homophobic towards the queens. In S2 and S3, they were mostly cool with it and took it like champs, but in S4 and especially S6, it was obvious they felt like they were cheated and wanted to get out of it but they couldn't so they had to stick with it. The guy that Joslyn was paired up with was on the show only because he cheated on his fiance and the fiance signed him up for the show as punishment, not to mention the producers took all the products for dark skin away after Trinity's gone and left Joslyn fumble with what she had at the time, Joslyn was done dirty before the challenge even started and her elimination is clearly staged by production.

Yeah so if you look it up most of the dudes they brought over for the makeover were paid actors they brought on to play "straight macho fathers". If you look up the people they brought on a lot of them did acting work prior to this gig with the Mike dude that "ruined the episode" doing work as a bailiff character on reality court TV shows. Jaremi Carey (PhiPhi) has supported this on twitter and made mention they were deliberately asked to play straight, stir up drama, and look over it for the story line of the episode. So ultimately this being one of the worst episodes in the show's run is truly a comedy of errors on production's part.

My favorite makeover challenge will always be season 9, when they made-over the crew because you could tell that the crew really did care and wanted to do their best. In the first 6 seasons of drag race, most of the people who were brought in for the makeover challenge were straight, some of them even slightly or obviously homophobic, which caused the queens the challenge and landed them in the bottom, because those people refused to cooperate and the unlucky queens who got stuck with them usually didn't do well in the challenge (Kenya, Joslyn, ect). S5 is the first season where they casted actual gays for the challenge and it took them another 5 seasons to cast another group of gays for makeover.

Every single time that they (specifically Michelle) mention “Family Resemblance,” I scream in pure frustration because… it’s mostly impossible to have 2 individuals look related (according to their standards) when they’re clearly not alike in terms of facial features, body types, hair textures, etc. I don’t hate the challenge. It’s this criteria that does my head in. The makeover challenge can be as easy as put regular people in drag for the first time. That’s literally all they have to do. Ok, but talking about good sides of this challenge - you know what was good Makeover Challenge? Season 7 one. Not only it mixed the cast coming back, which is always good content, but the conjoined twins theme was fun and allowed for some creativity from the girls. Also All Stars 2 was great, because having actual family members there - really elevated the episode. And it shut any complaints Michelle could have about family resemblance.
