Another funny thing about the Abyssal Black Dragon... it can't Fly. I know it has a Reaction that says it flies, but it has no Fly speed anywhere on its stat block and that Reaction specifically says that it only goes up. And to add to this, that would almost certainly happen with 5 explosions. Say you have somehow have 400 HP, the first explosion takes you to 100 HP, the second to 25 HP, the third to 6 HP, the fourth brings you down to 1 HP and then on the fifth you'd drop to 0. I haven't done the exact math but I'm pretty sure you would need more than 1,000 HP to survive 5 of those explosions in a row

That's the problem when you've got one stat that means a bunch of things. Charisma is also a different flavor of willpower, in a "force of personality" sort of way, which is why some things have charisma saving throw (like Banishment). Like, Phaerimms are horrible giant spiky leech things, and tend to have a charisma around 20 depending on edition, for example.

he isn't immune to the poisoned condition though, and he can't use invisibility because he's immune to the invisible condition, he isn't immune to incapacitated or stunned. his "legendary resistance" is entirely unusable because of turn order, and he can get essentially one shot by a 17th level divination wizard as long as they have a sufficiently low roll on their portent for this guy to fail the wisdom save on imprisonment, choosing slumber as the method. notably, sleeping is separate from the unconscious condition, which it applies, and as the old god of the nine hells is not immune to magical sleep, the rules dictate that he can be affected by imprisonment slumber. as the rules also dictate, a creature does not awaken from imprisonment slumber after receiving damage, so for the next month or so you gather a village to just hit him all day until he dies.

21:50 i feel like a really good example of a way to actually do something like this well, was how Brennan mulligan ran Asmodeus at the end of EXU calamity. like that was an insanely powerful, unbeatable creature that one of the party members actually did interface with. and he didn't need a stat block to run that encounter effectively, he didn't even roll initiative. he just said "he puts you within multiple time stops, breaks your back, kills you, casts true resurrection on you and kills you again." like he used dnd terms but didnt need an actual stat block to say it was unbeatable, he just showed it.

It would make a really good boss fight for a game that's trying to capture a certain kind of horror vibe. It sounds like it was designed for a meta gaming party. Where you know it's going to be a combat encounter and need to plan around how the DM has set up the fight. I will say this: I like the baby of darkness idea. Like... REALLY like the idea. Sure it has some flaws, but those are managable. Just think of a group (requires non-murderhobos) wandering around, finding a baby toddling around, get closer, the baby turns its head rapidly with a creepy undead stare and sprints towards the players, only for more to come out of the undead forest, which all try to grapple you and if you cant get rid of them after like 5 seconds you get Yamcha'd! Same! It needs some tweaking but it's one amazing idea for a horror encounter. You could make the "immovable" thing like a debuff that the babies apply as they grapple you, like one baby reduces your movement by X due to its lethargic touch or something, and as they accumulate you become immobile and lethargic because they are literally draining your momentum/energy like little "blackholes". The idea itself is a cool one indeed, and have the potential for a very creepy encounter. I would portray them as some kind of spawn of the void or the remaining darkness of a long dead dark entity.

Thematically... Ya baby of darkness works. While wandering the forest you hear the cries of a young child. In a small clearing, you see a wooden bassinet. When the players look in it, a shadow child attacks, the players bat in a way and it disappears into smoke. The players then notice small red eyes all around them from the forest edge. The children descend on the party. Maybe not explode but cause damage when multiple attack. I actually like the speed thing, let them charge when close.

The speed thing seems to me to be lacking a single phrase (until the end of the next turn). Have it be 'If child of darkness comes within 10ft of a player character, their speed increases to 50ft until the end of their next turn'. Suddenly, it starts having more sense. If you let them approach you once, you'll no longer be able to run away that easily, meaning that the way to deal with these babies is to keep them at a distance to begin with.

Well it is definetley dificult to figure out how to deal with swarms on one hand you cant have a tiny swarm of gargantuan dragons, on the other hand the chroma conclave is a gargantuan swarm of gargantuan dragons. On the third foot one would assume a swarms size is determined by the number if individuals. So for a gargantuan swarm you need millons of individuals. But enough about swarms. Once you reach gargantuan the size range within that becomes the smalest gargantuan one measured in meters looks mocroscopic compared to the biggest. Measured in light years.

It only takes fifteen successful grapple explosions. Better yet, since celestial obliteration doesn't specify that it can target less than an infinite number of creatures, it would presumably destroy EVERY creature (including itself) when using it, so it needs to fend off the babies of darkness with ordinary spells if it doesn't feel like dying. There is sadly no other player within 10 ft to make them move easier, though.

I just found notes on the most novel way I had a party deal with traditional problems. Poisoned sleeping princess with hydra poison vs party of 6 lv1 bards. Taking turns to rest they all used the lv1 spell pick your poison on the princess to turn the poison to booze which can safely be metabolized a state we calculated they could keep up indefinitely with the number of spell slots they had managed to get. After having the sleep dispelled they went on a drunken bender with the princess after persuading their way out of the castle with her figuring that vigorous activity is the fastest way to sober up.

In Mutants and Masterminds there is a concept called Power Level X. A Power Level X character is a character who does not have a character sheet because they cannot be beaten with the team's current capabilities. (Mind you this is a super hero game, where at the highest levels, you can move planets with the spread sheets that come with the book.) Similarly in Pathfinder: Gods do not have character sheets, because as soon as think of reaching for your weapon, they will use a mythic action to start at the top of the initiative and then they wish you dead as an immediate action. Some creatures do not need character sheets, if they have a character sheet, it implies they can be killed no matter how slim the chance.

To be honest I've been inspired to create a creature from this 99999999 Hitpoint one. It has that much hitpoints, no movement. Has a passive that any creature that enters its domain, which is 300ft around it can't leave unless it allows it to or it's unconscious/dead. The domain appears normal from the outside, and can't be detected by magic or dispelled even though it's magical in nature and extends from the creature's core. But from the inside, you lose access to see the outside unless you are the creature that the domain belongs to. The domain prevents any creature from leaving, but not objects, and it extends to teleportations being negated if they involved teleporting outside of the domain, but will work if teleporting from outside to inside the domain. It has no attacks and it's armour class is 9999, while it's saves are +999, and can't be tricked and speaks all languages. It's attacks? None. It's first ability is "Emotional attacks' as an action, the way which this could work by saying specific stuff telepathically that each chosen target within it's domain would hear differently(as in different sentences or phrases or even conversation) as they would hear what would cause them to be most emotional, be it negative or posative emotions, in order to manipilate them easier. They roll a 10 save, or they will experience the single emotion of choice to an extreme enough version that their senses might be dulled, thus have a disadvantage on all attacks, ability checks, and any rolls (Including death saving throws and rolls related to "insert next ability name here") Second ability/mythical actions This ability can be activated and deactivated at will, on the condition that the time in-between activating and deactivating is no less than an hour. Each creature (Including itself) will have a symbol of death form on them. Start of each creature's turn, they roll a d20 no modifiers, and no advantages apply from any source, and while a creature is inflicted with "Emotional attacks" they have a disadvantage on this roll. If a creature rolls a natural 1 they decent into insanity, and each time they get a natural one, another death mark appears on somewhere on their body randomly (Even if the body part is severed, the link remains to the host) upon three natural 1's in total, the creature's brain stops functioning and dies. The creature cant be revived in its same body, and even though this effect is magical, it can't be dispelled. With each natural 20 rolled, a mark of hope appears somewhere on their body. Each mark of hope counters the effect that the mark of death causes to the creature's mind, thus treating the creature as if they had 1 less mark of death per mark of hope. Upon getting 3 marks of hope before getting 3 marks of death, the creature is teleported outside the domain, and can't enter again for the next 24 hours, additionally they won't remember anything when they were in the domain until that 24 hours are over. (Meaning this creature can kill itself or teleport outside its domain) In the case where this creature kills itself, all effects related to this creature's abilities end and the domain disappears. In the instance this creature succeeds on three 20's, then it is teleported elsewhere in the range of 6 miles, and all creatures affected by any of its abilities automatically get three mark of hopesl, thus teleporting them outside the domain, and the same 24 hour memory/interaction rule applies. -----I made this on the fly as soon as I saw that 99999 homebrew creature lol

The description says the Baby of Darkness was birthed from a Mother of Darkness. So I’m imagining a black goat of the woods with a thousand youngs situation. Just a skyscraper sized monster, slowly floating by. Slimy deformed crying babies excrete from its many birthing orifices continuously. Dropping to the city below, sound of newborn bones crunch on impact but they soon recover from their fall, and turn their heads to the civilians running in horror. Soon you end up with a deserted city. Babies roam the streets, using their cries to echo locate hidden survivors (the BBEG should seal the city gates first somehow). Corpses who died from sudden flood of necrotising energy litter the empty alleys, occasionally jerking, as they slowly transform into undead. The babies seem to feed off of something, as time progresses, they gradually gain the ability to stand, and run. But parts of them grow much much faster than the rest. Malformed humanoid beasts start to develop other traits. Perhaps there could be a mystery, a puzzle of some kind, for the players to figure out: what feeds them; what cause them to mutate differently seemingly between different streets; how do we halt their progression; how do we use their progression to the survivors’ advantage, maybe cause them to become less effective. This is a short post apocalypse city survival campaign.

Some of the worst rated ones are because of them just been poorly written or just sort of unfinished or part of some other piece and on there own plain broken. as I know I seen some earilier when I gone... this is great just need to be fixed or tweaked and its a good Homebrew (minus the specific set of circumstances where its encounter and the semi ods rule around its encounter).

Old God of the Nine Hells' Legendary Resistance says it permits infinite rerolling of checks, NOT saves. So it's entirely feasible that Banishment could send it back to the Nine Hells, with good luck. I want to see the look on the face of the DM who dared to field something like this, only for it to be defeated by a 4th level spell.

I can't help but look at something like this and wonder where the gap in the armor is. Since it can only re-roll checks, the ever helpful divination wizard can always just Portent it into a failure. This also opens up the Polymorph + Power Word Kill combo, since PWK causes death without reducing HP and undoing polymorph. Alternatively, even if it can reroll saves - it can only reroll a check until it gets a 20. Forcing it to reroll after it has ALREADY rolled a 20 with Silvery Barbs says it 'must reroll the d20 and use the lower roll'. Since it's forced to use the lower roll, I would say this can make it fail a save too. Really should have given it plus infinity to those too. So now we know how to kill it - but how do we survive long enough to do that? Celestial Obliteration is a one hit kill if it lands, and it's a reaction - though, technically speaking, a reaction requires a trigger of some sort, which this does not have. Still, we have to win imitative and possibly survive one if the reaction is allowed, so let's look at how to do that. I think we need to win initiative regardless. Even with save DC 1, going first means it can chain together as many Time Stops as it wants. Initiative is a DEX check... going first against this thing is going to be tough since it effectively always has a 30. Still, that number could be beatable with Alert, maybe a bardic inspiration and guidance, a Luckstone, Bend Luck, collect all the miscellaneous bonuses you can and of course have a good Portent roll. If it can use the reaction, you might have to survive a Celestial Obliteration. A natural 1 on a Portent dice can still make one miss - even with plus infinity, natural 1's are always a miss. Since we've established that it can be forced to fail saves, the Sanctuary spell could also stop it from attacking you. Alternatively, even if it has unlimited range and unlimited blindsight and truesight, this only allows it to scour a mere single plane clean in a turn! With a Gate in place, multiple groups could attack in sequence, exhausting it's single reaction. With it's single reaction though, I think my favorite technique would be with spell sharing tricks like multiclassing and scrolls (or a Lore Bard with the right arcane secrets) a caster could prepare a contingent true resurrection - simply die to the Celestial Obliteration, then get back up and cast Polymorph anyway.

Important to add: Amaterasu is also a Jutsu from Naruto that lets you create eternal black flames whereever you look. They can't be put out for like a week and basically once you are caught in it, you are dead. This is the same thing.

Yes and no on the "once you are caught by it you are dead." It's just really difficult to deal with. But you can seal it, or discard whatever is caught by it.
