It is unbelievable how many jigs i have popped out of bass mouths. I started doing your way and it really helped. I think the hard hook set when you connect with the fish tears a hole around the hook and they come off easier also.

Great tip. I seen so many with me jack that hook set to cross their eyes and never reel. Their rod unloads and they loose that fish. They won’t listen and try to set the hook harder the next time. Load up and reel is a great technique. Thanks for the videos. Tight lines are Godspeed.

I agree. Resist the urge to set the hook on the bite. I know it's hard to do but let him swim off, and then just reel and lean.

Great video Randy! You mentioned this in a video a few years back and it completely changed my success with a jig. Especially in heavy cover like root balls out on huge flats. I used to set it like you said and I would not only lose them but continually get snagged in the roots. Doing it your way, I usually hook up and the fish come straight up through. I hope everyone heeds this advice. It made jig fishing my #1 confidence technique. Thanks to Randy.

I also found when ur pitching a jig shallow , they come straight to the boat and when fishing a jig in deeper water the bass don’t get off as much if I have 10-12 feet of water , thanks for sharing this tip cause I know I jack em and I’m doing it wrong , so thanks for this one

Learned the same lesson in the mid 70s. Since then I never jack the fish on any bait. Not so much nowadays but back then I spent the time to sharpen my hooks to a fine point. Then you could take a bait out of the package and it would slide off your thumb nail, no bite to the point !

Thanks Randy. I love fishing jigs but am never sure when/how to set the hook. I will try to tame my reflex reactions and do as you suggested. I am wondering if you take the same approach with spotted bass. It seems a lot of times I get a bite and then there is nothing there when I go to set the hook. Also, does the same rule apply when fishing soft plastics such as the Strike King structure bug? I appreciate the info. Keep up the good work.

...I had no idea the actual mechanics involved with that big ole' football head popping the mouth open, but I stopped setting the hook "like a pro" a few years back when that 10-pounder I thought had just inhaled my jig was ACTUALLY a verrrrrrry old tree stump - needless to say my poor Mitchell Spider Rod did not survive that encounter, and as the rod was years discontinued by then, I lost out...I've since changed the way I approach setting the hook, but with the way some of these KZbin influencers jack a jig (Greg Blanchard, Fletcher, Debo), I see now why they lose more than a few on camera...great info Randy..!!

I want to try this so badly but I fish out of a kayak. Any tips on using this technique when you can't follow the fish around your boat?
@andybales7318
@andybales7318 Жыл бұрын
Alot of people miss fish, by using braid...the zero shock/give is even worse from a kayak, as I do...can't follow them around, like in a boat...in a kayak, u need to bring them to u...with braid, that can make the hole bigger, resulting in lost fish from a yak...unless u have your drag set perfect...I prefer to use monofilament from my yak, fairly tight drag & rarely lose a fish..just my .02
@EvanMorsell

@@andybales7318 thanks for sharing this Andy. I typically throw my jigs on fluoro; if i lose any fish this spring on this technique i'll give mono a shot. Do you set the hook similarly to Randy?
@andybales7318
@andybales7318 Жыл бұрын
@@EvanMorsell with mono, u need to set the hook like we were always taught on a jig/worm...I tried fluoro a couple times...1 problem I had, was it just randomly broke....I saw a video, where they mentioned when fluoro stretches after being used, it becomes weaker...there's no controlled stretch, like mono..I typically change out my line every month or slightly longer...doing that with fluoro would require a bank loan 😆 u had any random breaks with fluoro? The pros likely change it out weekly, with getting it free..BUT, I've seen many line breaks on some tv bass tourneys & bet fluoro was being used..I can't remember the last time I broke my line on a fish
@EvanMorsell
@EvanMorsell Жыл бұрын
@@andybales7318 could probably count on one hand the number of times i've had fluoro break on me last season. I can't confidently say whether or not it was from my line being frayed or if i hooked a pike or pickerel lol What pound test would you use for flipping heavy cover with mono?
@andybales7318
@andybales7318 Жыл бұрын
@@EvanMorsell I had it break twice...both on a hookset, and 1 it broke way up from the bait...both were clean cuts, too...really strange...just lost confidence in fluoro after that..For flippin', I'd use 20lb. Sufix Seige.. I typically use 17lb. and usually just slide cast from the yak towards whatever cover at the time....very strong & good abrasion resistance w/low memory...check it out sometime 👍

This is a hard sell my man, I'll try it your way, but i get the feeling there's an amount of force that didn't translate into words here or something.
