Fun fact: the mascot for the high school in the city which Concordia College is located, Moorhead, MN, is the spud. Yes, the Moorhead Spuds. So kids who go to both Moorhead High, and then go to Concordia, spend their whole academic career as vegetables. I may have been a Spud, but at least I wasn’t a Cobber...

A brief history of the briefly-mentioned SAU Muleriders in the mention of the University of Arkansas-Montecello Bollweevils: Back in the very old days, when the SAU football team had to travel to an away game, they didn't have a bus and they sure didn't fly anywhere. So the only mode of transportation was the train. There is a railroad that runs through Magnolia (I work there). However, the passenger train schedule did not match the team's need. So, the SAU team and coaches would ride mules to the town of McNeil, AR (5 miles north of Magnolia) where the larger St. Louis Southwestern RR (aka the Cotton Belt RR) ran friendlier passenger train schedule. So eventually SAU adopted "Muleriders" as their mascot. A few years ago, SAU celebrated their 100th birthday with a muleride with the football team to McNeil. They had the Union Pacific RR (now operating the line through McNeil) stop all trains at the crossings and flag the crossings so as to not spook the mules. No mule went crazy or was harmed during the reenactment.

Central Arkansas has a lot of strange mascots. UAM is pretty strange, yet my school is called the "Wonder Boys" and our physical mascot is a dog. We would face Monticello a few times a year so imagine "Wonder Boys vs Boll Weevils" in your headlines.
