It started off such a solid day, we had a big crew of 9. The first 3 laps were fun and conditions were prime but things turned bad on the 4th lap when we got to the skull drop. This is one of the gnarliest features in OC. Its a 20 ft drop but the run in is really steep and will want to pull your nose down so its really important to yank on this drop. I always pop just to be sure. Kyle and Matt did it first. On their first attempts they both went a little nose heavy but they both hiked back up to hit it clean the 2nd time. Although Calvin was nervous he felt confident with the feature. Unfortunately he didnt pull up hard enough and the front dove, Calvin went OTB head first and rag dolled down. It was the worse crash I have ever seen.
I cant explain that gut wrenching feeling you get when you see your friend take a 20 ft drop hit the ground head first and watch his body go limp and flip like a rag doll. The impact was so hard that his helmet left a big indention into the ground. It is truly a miracle that Calvin didn't break his neck, become paralyzed or ...even worse. When I got down to Calvin, he was awake, coherent and was even joking. But every minute that went by he started losing his memory. Luckily Matt who's a nurse told us we needed to get him down to the hospital as soon as possible.
Seeing this crash in person and watching Calvin sit up and joking can only be described as a miracle. We had a big group there was 9 of us. Kyle walked him down while the rest of us carried his bike and helmet. None of us really understood the severity of it except for Matt. We figured since he was talking and coherent he was ok.
Kyle drove Calvin to the hospital and once they admitted him to the ER they immediately took X Rays, CT scans and MRI then they rushed him to Trauma Center. They were afraid he had brain bleed, once I heard that my heart sank. I felt so guilty and helpless. That was when I asked for prayers. I want to truly thank everyone who prayed for Calvin 🙏🙏🙏 God answered our prayers, Calvin was released from the following day with no broken neck and no brain bleed nothing but a fat lip and sore ankle. The doctors and nurses were all shocked he was ok.
I didnt want to post this video until we knew Calvin was ok. He told me yesterday to go ahead and post it after he was released from hospital but I wasnt ready to watch the crash. Calvin wants his crash to show people how dangerous our sport can be and how important it is to wear good protection.
Huge thanks to the crew who helped Calvin down 🙏
There were some trolls on my IG post giving coaching advice or what Calvin did wrong. Seriously? Go F yourself don't need your negative comments here especially from someone whos never done this feature let alone seen it. Its very gnarly feature and we all crash its part of the sport. Obviously this was a big one and Calvin is blessed that God protected him. Its been a huge learning experience for me and I hope in some ways this video has helped you. Please everyone ride safe out there.

Hi. Absolutely right. I fell riding a bike alone. Lucky for me, it was in front of a restaurant. I broke my arm. Thank God they smiled at me. Today I have my arm immobilized and I will have to have surgery. But it's all right.

Last January I had a buddy go full OTB on a steep set of stairs - he flew off his bike and cracked his helmet and landed on his back. I was most concerned about a concussion because of his helmet but he seemed fine and didn't have any memory loss or wooziness after laying down for 5-10 minutes. After he got a ride home he went to the ER just to double check and found he had broken his back in two places. Lesson of the day, no matter how bad the crash seems or how your buddy seems its better to get him to a hospital and be safe rather than sorry

I chickened out on sending a big feature this weekend, and now I see this video. He's very lucky for that could have been so much worse. One of my friends is getting over 5 broken ribs and a lacerated spleen from a crash and my other riding buddy crashed and lacerated his adrenal gland. We have to pay dues for the radness sometimes. I'm really grateful that I had the instinct to not send that feature this weekend without 100% confidence and potentially ruining my life for the next few months with a business to run. I'll check that one off when I'm ready. Hope your buddy Calvin heals fast Tommy. 🙏🏼

Just some gentle advice. Quit while you're ahead. No, I am not talking about quitting mountain biking all together. I am talking about your desire to go bigger and bigger. You have a good life. A great business, great family, and great friends. You are not getting younger my friend. It only takes one crash to end it all. There's no need to go bigger and bigger. People will still view your channel regardless, and I'm assuming your channel doesn't even bring in that much money anyways. So why take the risk for "views"? Nobody wants to see you get severely hurt, or even paralyzed. Things happen, and people never seem to regret their decision until something happens.

I actually took a huge step back after seeing this crash. It really messed me up mentally. Its a miracle Calvin is OK and it's been 6 months, I recently rode with him about a month ago and I think since then seeing him riding like a boss has made me get rid of some guilt I've been holding and I feel like I've been riding better now. Trust me I don't post videos for views I never have, and yes there's no $ in it. I simply go out and ride with my friends and record. It's as real as it gets nobody does anything different for the cameras

As a therapist specialized in brain injury and concussion rehab, symptoms may onset days later or may manifest slightly appearing normal to the untrained eye. Often mild concussions are misdiagnosed but are significant enough to impact a persons daily life. Any type of head injury should be seen by a physician and treated right away, seconds could mean the difference in a persons recovery (time is brain). Lastly, symptoms may reoccur with triggers, it is best to slowly acclimate yourself especially to physical activity to manage symptoms. Glad to hear Calvin is ok.

Thank you for your comment. Calvin went for a follow up Cat scan yesterday and he's clear. It was a very scary crash and the only reason how he can be OK is God. He will definitely take it easy when he gets back on the bike. So have I.

He’s lucky. My brother had a small brain bleed from a low speed atv crash. Had to have emergency surgery and has a scar from his forehead all the way to the back of his ear. Lost his speech for a week too. Wild shit.

I did a similar thing, nose cased the mushroom drop in north tahoe... except i somehow did an entire front flip and landed on my back and slid down. one of my shoes flew off 30 feet down the trail, but was otherwise just fine. my boxxers bent backwards, but was able to ride down and out of the trail, lol. rough landing here.

Man thats scary to watch, especially the concussion setting in. Calvin REALLY needs to take it easy getting back into things cause the effects of concussions can last for quite a while and the last thing he needs is to be concussed again.

And I thought my crash today was bad, that one is nuts, he's lucky to have walked away from that. I had the front wash out on a first landing of a series of 3 ledge drops that was about 10ft high total and OTBd down the rest of it. Fucked up shoulder, but thankfully no concussion.
