Just hypnotically beautiful, the fabrication of that forward outer sill section. Loads of experience on show about how to accomplish not just a good fit, but a perfect fit. I couldn’t work out why Steve tacked it into place, more than once, only to remove it, but watched it again, got the aha. You can’t guess this stuff. You’ve to have worn the T-shirt and earned it. A far better watch than any telly program.

Seeing this stuff makes me not feel so bad about the odd dent, ding or scratch on mine. Cold weather Miata owners (and car lovers in general) have it rough dealing with salt half the year. It makes me happy seeing skilled fellers like yourself keeping these on the road, especially NA generation cars.

You have excelled at this Steve. What an eye you have to make well fitting panels from nothing and saving another MX5! What is not to like about that! Lets look at this project. At the moment is is worth say £300 for bits plus £500 for the interior. If we allow £2,500 for YCR work and say an other £750 for mechanical work the owner is spending £3,250 on a safe rust proof car that will do for another 5 years. The only issue is driving it through a low emission zone if there is one local to the car owner. Now look at the price of a sorted MG Midget or Spitfire and you are spending lots more for something that is light years inferior to this car. Magic work again Steve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It´s always a pleasure to watch your channel bringing these MX 5 back on the road again. As i wrote some time ago,i owned 2 MX 5 NB FL,both were gone by rust. No underbody protection,no cavity sealing, nothing was done by factory. Anyway,i still love these cars ...crazy, isn´t it? Keep on your perfect work, folks! And i bow to your manual skills. Cheers! As always, a beaut channel and great results / instructional video. Logical approaches to how, where and what needs to be done, to put the car back in order. I probably would have elected to remove the sill(s) and chase the rot full length along the perimeter, but that would be simply by a layman's approach and not by an experienced and dedicated tradesperson. No, I am well into my 70's, physically unable to do this work, but have been an avid follower of vehicle restoration, panel repairs and metal fabrication, for years. Always watch your page and learn a lot from it, even if in my case, it is theoretical.

It depends on the owner and the car itself. If it's just transportation to you, then no. However, I've owned mine for 10 years now and it represents the good times spent with my late father fixing it up. It was also the car that got me into cars. It would have to get dropped out of an airplane for me to consider writing it off. Also, NAs are officially in classic car territory and becoming increasingly more difficult to find in good condition. Who knows how much they'll be worth in 10 years time.

We did ot have to cross a border for that😄 always enjoyed working on anything with nuts and bolts, my last cars in the UK where BMW and Toyota othig ever wennt wrong with them i wonder why ? biggest regrets, walking away from a Dailmer Dart with no first gear ! £300, and even worse a Triumph TR4a £400, i was young and stupid with no cash. my best buy was a Mini for £12, sold same day for £40, what a Fxx mess . Nice work - I've binned off gas-mig & gone to 0.6mm flux core for panel work. Your head will spin at why you didn't try it sooner if you give it a shot.. it welds easier (less blow through), it welds more precisely (Eh??), there's sod all warping compared to with gas (also Eh??) - It grinds down FAR easier as it give a much flatter weld (Eh?? lol..), I don't have to faff about with gas.. I fix rust all day every day - same as you. I wish (bigly wish) I had given flux core a try long before now - I always took other lads word for it that it was "Rubbish" for panel welding & just ignored it. My Bad on that, I should have tried it years ago - I'd have saved an absolute fortune on gas, I;d have got more done faster & I wouldn't have thousands tied up in welding machines (they're all for sale - that's how much better it is for panels, honestly). It's a bloody game-changer once you get your head around how to get the best out of it.

If you think that MX ^ is bad - weld a few Mercs... those are absolute muck-pits by comparison. I have often lost the will to live trying to find where the rust stops on SL's convertibles & the like. Or any Subaru you care to mention.... give me a Miata to do any day of the week over either of those.. Those are Hell/. That said, I'm at a Defender right now with an MR2 up next - and I cannot wait to get back to the Jap stuff after this absolute head-melt of a 4*4 is done. I never want to see another. Every square inch has required work. You'd rebuild the QE2 faster. I will never whinge about having a rusty Jap to do ever again. :-) After the MR2 is done, I have a Mazda B2200 to do some stuff to that I rebuilt completely 25 years ago - none of the stuff I did has gone bad, it's the bits I didn't do back then that now need attention - was well chuffed that the repairs held up so well for a quarter of a century - which is pretty mind blowing tbh. It puts things into perspective when a yoke you fixed that long ago rolls in still looking well. Cool little pick-up it is too.

If you watch all of the video you will.see I didn't weld them on perminently, I tacked them on to get a better cut line. I then cut it back off and had it in my hand at the end where I said " watch our next video where we will mend the inner structure then we can weld the outer panel on " making the outer pannel helps us shape the inner panel. thank you for your comment.

Ok guys I have watched several of your videos, I am not from your country so I am curious, all of these rusty cars you are repairing is it because the owner needs to pass some kind of inspection for the car to be licensed? It seems like an excessive amount of work and cost to keep a 20 year old car on the road. Or maybe are these cars what you people call hobby/classic/collector cars in your country for fun use or carshows? Thank you for any replies, I am genuinely curious, no disrespect intended.
