Statistically the worst NASCAR driver of all time is in fact Danica Patrick. 191 races. Never finished in the top five, only seven times in the top ten. In 53,561 total career laps she led 64 of them. Somehow. But another driver just for sheer length of ineptitude in his career beats her out for my worst driver pick of all time: Michael Waltrip. 33 years, 784 races. Four victories. Also led less than 1% of his laps. Never finished higher than 12th in the standings. But two of those four victories happened to be at Daytona, including the Earnhardt death race. Plus his brother was pretty good. So people hear his name and think he's better than he was. Waltrip made a career out of plugging along in 20-25th place. Just most people that do that don't last for a third of a century.

With regards to Jeremy Mayfield, there was one other controversy involving him during his NASCAR career. In early August 2006, he was racing for Ray Evernham when he learned he had let go prior to the Watkins Glen round that year for veteran driver Bill Elliott. The stated public reason was that the #19 was below top-35 and they needed to get the car back above 35th (at the time only the top-35 in owner's pts were qualified in each Cup series race). Unofficially it turns out Mayfield had made some very pointed comments about Evernham not being at the track often; it turned out that Mayfield was right - Evernham wasn't at the track often because he was sleeping with another driver, Erin Crocker (she was racing the team's #98 entry in the Truck Series that year), whom Evernham later married in 2009. Ironically, Evernham is still pretty much respected in the NASCAR garage (he was Jeff Gordon's crew chief back during Gordon's golden era of racing before becoming a team owner) while Mayfield.....

Guess I'll do a part-2. Stremme was rushed to Cup, ran for a subpar Ganassi Team and Penske before they were a power. He runs dirt modifieds now and has done really well, also builds Lethal Chassis for the Dirt Car modifieds. Carl Long was a long-time underdog driver who actually got DQ'd from the 2000 Coke 600 for having an engine that was too big. Dale Jr said carl would run circles around him in late models at the local level. He COULD drive, just was severely underfunded. And I think I got everyone you mentioned. Scott Speed is actually a world-class talent who brought Red Bull sponsorship to ARCA (NASCAR) and learning to drive a stock car just out of F-1 is night-and-day difference. He excelled at off-road racing (I saw him race Global Rally and he did amazing) and I've met him a couple times, super cool guy. Dick Trickle was a short-track legend who didn't race full-time NASCAR until he was in his late 40s and he didn't have good equipment, but he nearly won Bristol in the late 90s. He has THOUSANDS of short-track wins. Jeremy Mayfield was a good driver, underrated, he got railroaded by Brian France who is a snake. Danica...she was a cash cow and was terrible. She had championship equipment who was a wreck magnet.

Scott Speed and David Stremme both suffered from being thrust into the Cup Series far before they were ready for it. They still needed seasoning. A lot of drivers were unfortunately put in that same position throughout the mid 00's to early 10's era and are labeled busts because of it. Back in the early 00's, the thought of topping out on Trucks or Busch/Nationwide/Xfinity was unheard of. I think both Scott and especially David could have had far better careers if they had just stayed below Cup. There's absolutely no shame in it.

However, the week after his suspension, Mayfield stated that he had only taken two tablets of Claritin-D and the prescription drug Adderall, which he stated was prescribed to assist his attention deficit disorder,[16] and that he had never used any sort of illegal drug. His wife, family, friends, fans, crew chief and other team members, drug store receipts, and signed prescription from his care provider backed these claims.

You completed ignored how Mayfield made the chase at Evernham in 2004 and 2005. Also before anyone mentions 2006, Mayfield was given the R&D crew (that was part time before 2006) as Mayfields crew chief went to Kasey Kahne after Tommy Baldwin left for Yates Racing and Scott Riggs basically got the rest of Kasey Kahnes former crew from 2004-05. Evernham, while remembered as an amazing crew chief, was not the best team owner in NASCAR and seemingly his 2 entries (the 10 and 19) were off pace compared to the 9 team at Evernham, with Ray also not paying enough attention to his own team as he started dating his own development driver, Erin Crocker (who’s now Evernham’s wife) and after Mayfield called him out on it, Mayfield was let go from Evernham mid-season.

10:23 This was not during practice. This was during the Subway 400 race at Rockingham in 2004 (the final race for the Cup series there so far). Jeremy Mayfield had a short career renaissance while driving the 19 for Ray Everingham in 2003-2005, then it fell apart in 2006. Also, another driver that could have been featured is Quin Houff. He raced in the Cup series in just under 100 races over 4 seasons and never finished better than 13th.

Don't agree with Mayfield at all. Even after he left Penske he had 3 wins in the top series and was a solid driver for another 6 years. Unfortunately his team owner was banging his driver and Jeremy caught wind of this so he got fired in 2006. Not to mention he's not even the only guy to be caught for "illegal" substances, as Shane Hmiel was as well and he was far worse in all tiers, save for 1 truck win, before getting suspended. Even then you could go as far as to replace guys like him and Carl Long who had the misfortune of driving for backmarkers his whole career with someone like Quinn Houff or Cody Ware who are both known for tearing up equipment more than anything. At least Carl, for all his faults, has proven to be a semi decent team owner when Nascar isn't screwing him over
