Fish owner and microbiologist here ;) These look like salt water fishes, so opening eyes in that water was probably pretty hard. Also water looks suspiciously cloudy. I'm not sure if this is a real aquarium or just a temporary setup (i don't see any aquarium equipment), but in a real aquarium you get this type of cloudiness if you have a bacterial bloom (typical for a new setup). If it is a bacterial bloom, that could cause a lot of eye irritation. I would also be worried about the fishes. Models are wearing make-up, some might have perfume, skin lotions, soap residues on their bodies. Fish don't tolerate these things well. Also, it is probably quite stressful for them.

if it's saltwater fish...is this saltwater there? Why would you use saltwater to advertise DRINKING WATER? Or is it processed freshwater they put from the hose attached to a regular tap...and they put saltwater fish into freshwater? Knowing ANTMN and their treatment of animals and how ignorant they often seem about them and their needs(Source: The elephant shoot where they put girls on elephants that are clearly being abused by handlers; The Bee Shoot: Releasing fragile insects on people and allowing them to crawl under clothes and such. The Spanish/Corrida Shoot: Agitating the bull and also condoning animal cruelty that is the corrida) I wouldn't be surprised if thet got those fishes in freshwater. Because they a) didn't think it'd hurt them being in it for "a short period of time" b) maybe didn't even know they are saltwater fish.

This is also really harmful for the fish by the way. They are in general really sensitive animals that can die really quickly if they are stressed out or if something is not right with the water. And especially salt water fish are extremely susceptible to changes in temperature, general water quality and so on and are very difficult to keep healthy under "normal" circumstances...I would be surprised if they all survived the shoot

I actually did two underwater shoots a few years ago. It is HARD. It’s hard on the models and photographer. I was doing mine in a salt water pool that belongs to the parents of a friend, I don’t have access to fancy tanks. And I think this is how most people probably start with underwater work since it’s far more accessible. But in a pool, you’re constantly moving and trying to stay underwater with your camera, you’re wrestling with your camera in its special underwater housing and trying to capture your model at their best all at the same time. I have rarely been so exhausted after a shoot as I was those two days! They did produce some of the most beautiful images I’ve had the pleasure of shooting and it helped a lot that my main model was quite experienced underwater. It’s difficult to fight the instinct to puff up your cheeks and close your eyes underwater, let alone remembering the whole rest of your body needing to look beautiful. According to her, salt water is actually a lot easier on the eyes than a chlorine pool, but either way, they’re putting up with their eyes stinging, water constantly up their nose, water in their ears, they’re usually very cold, etc, and they have to look ethereal and graceful the whole time. I knew conceptually that it would be more challenging, but having actually gone through it, I have so much respect for underwater photography. I’d really love to do it again some time, my health isn’t up to it right now though. But hopefully some day I can get back in the pool! They were such incredibly difficult but rewarding shoots to do.

I had one experience like this and it was extremely difficult! Basically I had to relax my body and float in a pool, but I had this huge gown that needed to float out around me and this thing is dragging my body under the water only I am trying to look relaxed and ethereal but OMG it was Stressful! Looking back I'm glad I had that experience but at the time I was freezing and it felt like everything was just working so hard against me and the photographer, who kept having to get into the pool to adjust this dress and hair, it was A LOT.

@@ellamierrose1812 That sounds like it would make for some gorgeous images, but very hard-won photos! I’m glad I made it through ok! Getting too cold can definitely be a challenge for everyone. In my case, my model was being fairly active so she felt ok, but I was shivering. I ended up getting a wet suit before the second shoot, but that wouldn’t have helped you in your gown!

@@missdaydreamss in general these types of shoots are model/situation specific which means it's discussed and can decide not to do it. I did a photo shoot in 10 degree weather, it was -2 by the time we finished an hour and a half later. We had a portable heater, jackets, warmer gloves and inserts BUT I was in a corset and booty shorts and lace up boots. The photographer was someone I met thru friends a few yrs prior. He put up a post asking if there was anyone that wanted to model in this type of situation and we would get free prints from it. It turned out absolutely beautiful!! I'm glad I did it but I was shaking for about 3hrs after and slowly getting my body to warm back up. That's just my experience and as far as I know you only do these types of shoots if you want to. But could be different for certain companies.

I'm going to guess that the water would get more and more cloudy as the day went on because it would be contaminated by any body lotion, hair products, makeup... if there is anything in the fabric of the clothing they were wearing, etc. All of which would definitely kill the fish, by the way...

hey, fish owner here! this shoot made me so mad, salt water fish are known for having very special needs and being sensitive to changes in their environment. Not only were they put throung the stress of being put into a new tank but also having no space to escape from the models who were moving very quickly in the water. I'm also pretty sure that the makeup and clothing they were wearing was not safe for tropical fish The worst thing is that the fish weren't even visible in the final photos so they abused these animals for literally no reason. I genuinely hope that the fish were in that tank for one hour at most, with people monitoring the water parameters after each shoot and then put back into an appropriate and safe tank but who am I even kidding.

... Why? Just why. Sharks are able to "smell" bodily fluids, such as urine and, yes, menstrual blood. But they do not consider it appetizing at all. Menstruations are not just blood, sharks are able to understand that it does not come out from a victim of some injury. And the vast majority of them wouldn't care anyway because we are not on their menu to begin with. It's a whole bunch of bs just to make the girls uncomfortable.

Yoanna's picture, you mention how she could have put her arms up to improve it... which she did in some shots. Like maybe those ones weren't good for the lighting or maybe the photographer didn't catch those moments, but she definitely had poses with her arms up during the shoot. Also Janice's comment about her hair like... ma'am does your hair NOT float uncontrolled when you're underwater? Then again every time I see Janice I just go blind with anger because she's so unnecessarily rude at all times, so maybe she has magic hair that never moves and I just don't know that.

It's unlikely that the fish have been in the tank very long so the bacteria in that volume would be low provided the water itself was clean. The fish are more likely to suffer from the stress of being in a tank with people jumping in over and over wearing makeup, perfume and chemicals on their clothes.

They put those fish through a whole lot of stress for them to not even be in the photos. They're all huddled terrified on the bottom. You can't just put fish temporarily in a different tank like that because the change in water quality (plus the stress from the lights and the flailing human) can put them into shock and they could die. And salt water fish tend to be much more sensitive to changes in water quality then fresh water fish. Not to mention all the chemicals from their hair products, makeup, body lotions, etc; that's all very bad for fish. Thats probably why the water is cloudy. Or it could be that they mixed the saltwater incorrectly and there's a lot of undissolved salt in the water. It could also be a bacterial bloom because they only just set up that tank.

Well first things first those are salt water fish. No one should be drinking salt water. If they really wanted this concept it should be fish you find in the Rivera and springs that we get water from. But those fish aren't pretty. Also salt water hurts when you open your eyes in it. Also saltwater fish are supper sensitive and if there water chemistry is thrown off even a little they could all die. Also as someone who has a salt water tank the salt water you buy to fill tanks at home is different then the salt water in the ocean and I always get a rash when I stick my hand in to clean it. So no this would not be fun.

They praised Yoanna during her shoot (and the video clips showed her doing a great job), and yet the picture chosen is the worst picture Janice has ever seen? 🤔 that sounds like a problem with the photography or picture choice, not Yoanna. I think they realized when the pictures came back that their entire set up just didn’t work. It was a bust. Nolé or one of the guys talked about there being too many bubbles, and as you can see in the final photos, there’s not one single bubble. They cropped out *every bit* of the water, and that’s why you end up with that horrible blue swishy text overlay thing that they tried to pull off. The girls might as well have been in front of a green screen. They failed the girls on this photo shoot, and then blamed the girls for it.

Jay Manuel is a troublemaker. He is always going to the other girls boasting after the first girl rocks the photo shoot. I get that the producers are probably encouraging him to do that, but that just goes to show how toxic this environment/show really was.

Mercedes, the last girl to go into the tank, is in treatment for lupus. It's an autoimmune disease, so a large part of the treatment is knocking out the patient's immune system. So the last girl in that filthy tank was the one most likely to get an infection as a result. She didn't, which is some kind of miracle, but ANTM were sadists!!!

I'd like to point out that the fishes on the tank were Blue Hippo Tang (Dory, from finding Nemo), and those fishes are so fragile that Disney had to release a video pre Finding Dory's movie asking for parents to not gift their kids with those Fishes. They are almost endangered, need a very, VERY stable ambience to thrive and having that set, with human body diving in it, changing PH and throwing chemicals in the water most certainly killed all of them. Congrats on the genius that came up with that. I guess a 10 mins photoshop putting fishes in the photo would be too much

I think they just included the fish, so they had an excuse to use high levels of salt in the water. Not only does salt water sting your eyes, but it makes you float more. You aren't going to be able to pose if you are struggling to stay down. Shady.

I’m a model and can confirm that if you aren’t comfortable doing a specific gig, you just don’t do it. Your agent won’t scold you for turning down something with good reason. The show is SO unrealistic to how the industry actually is and sends the wrong message for aspiring models.

I'm a lifeguard, avid swimmer and a certified swim instructor. I think it's fair to say that I'm comfortable in water. To ask people who are not swimmers to go down for an extended period of time, not make bubbles and open their eyes confidently, that is a HUGE ask. Opening their eyes underwater is a check-off skill for my level 3 swimmers, and I've been at lifeguard recerts where people who ARE LIFEGUARDS struggle to stay down for a long time, pretending to be a victim for other lifeguards.

THANK YOU I have been scrolling looking for this comment for 20 minutes! That was the first thing I said when the first model climbed into the tank. Heels are appealing because of what they do to someone's body and posture when they stand in them. Even sitting in a chair with your feet on the floor, okay fine it changes your calves. But underwater? It does nothing! It looks weird, like you have something sticking off your foot. Plus like you said, it makes no sense in the concept!

As an aquarium owner I was thinking I was glad there were not fishes in that tank but boy I was wrong. Those discus probably die at the end of the day cuz they got stress during the photoshoot and the water got contaminated with the clothes, makeup etc, etc. They could use an empty tank with fresh water and a good filter so the picture came clear and second for health reason, open your eyes in a thank with fish waste and bacteria is not good at all.

Synchronized swimmer here: by expelling air through your nostrils when entering water, you prevent it from getting it and then create kind of an air wall in the nostrils. We love doing these kinds of pictures with figures and all (without the fish 🐠)

While snakes may not bother me (I think they're cute!), and tarantulas would creep me the hell out, I feel like an underwater shoot would be so hard. The posing could be fun and creative, but my eyes are also sensitive, plus I always need to hold my nose. 😆 At least a spider would just be getting over a mental block, but add in water and that's a massive physical problem to overcome. Props to these models for doing so well with something so difficult.

I know more about freshwater fish and these look like salt water. So, I don't know what the parameters need to be. Regardless wearing filthy shoes into an environment with fish can make them sick. Plus they are going to be pooping, which creates ammonia and that can't be good for the models eyes. I would consider this fish abuse. They are purposefully putring the fish in a situation where they can get hurt or sick just to be decor. Just photoshop the fish in afterwards!

I can relate with Mercedes. I have Lupus too. The flares are unpredictable and everything in my life has to be very flexible and adaptable. She's doing great dealing with it with everything models go through on this show. I don't know how well I'd do.

I seriously wonder how many of those very expensive, very sensitive saltwater tropical fish actually survived the stress and toxic chemical exposure from this photoshoot? I mean, its not as if these girls were told to show up without antiperspirant, or perfume, or body lotion or cosmetics on. All of these things are dangerously toxic to fish 🐟 😕 ☠

To answer your question about the fish- this was horrible for them. For one thing, fish get stressed out easily and it can actually kill them. Putting them in that huge tank, that is obviously not their every day environment, no doubt caused them stress. That's not to mention the multiple humans being dumped in there, flailing around and scaring them. You can see how they're lurking around the bottom edges of the tank, they'd definitely hide if they were provided a spot to do so. The next concern would be the chemicals, the girls were wearing make up, they probably had products in their hair, deodorant, perfume, laundry detergent in their clothes... That kinda stuff should never find its way into a fish tank. Especially a salt water one, those things are finnicky. In conclusion, the fish were not safe, nor happy.

As for the Quench water that I have never heard of even today 2023, in this photo shoot I see the photo with the model inside as the bottle of water, that is why it is a more vertical photo with the Q text on the front of the bottle. They are the bottle of water. Good Idea. However, the water looks dirty, and I would not want to drink it.
