I just find it very funny how Tyra claims she went through “hair hell“. She comes on the show and always talks about the horrible and negative things she went through in the modeling industry that traumatized her, then uses this platform to put the models through the same traumatic events instead of creating moments of teaching.

She’s always going on about how ANTM is revolutionary and bringing change to the industry, but it’s just recreating the same toxic environments and cycles. Only difference is it’s on television so we also internalize it and it warps our understanding of modeling. That’s why I love Jessica, she really breaks through the bullshit and shows us that hey, this isn’t the way it is or should be. She’s actually bringing about change.

The thing is... Ebony's skin doesn't seem to be textured, like, AT ALL. Also, around this time, makeup still didn't cater to darker skin tones. The replication looked better than any other model there, but since it was on darker skin, it may not have shown up as pigmented. All that to say, I'm glad we're finally calling out Tyra and this show.

Snake expert here- if you have a fear of snakes thrusting someone into a situation like this isn't gonna help them. Introducing people to baby or juvenile snakes is the way to go. If you absolutely must introduce them to an adult, ball pythons only. They have sweet puppy faces and next to 0 bite aggression. Most owners actually struggle feeding them for that very reason. Also sanitizing before and after handling snakes is crucial for both your and the snakes health
@ArmednotTriggered
@ArmednotTriggered 2 жыл бұрын
I would say a lot of owners struggle to feed them due to husbandry issues. I tend to refrain from showing baby snakes though. Just my personal experience. Baby snakes are a little darty and fast moving, depending on species, which can make people nervous. I tend to go for rosy boas or ball pythons because they both really docile. Honestly, my hognose is less likely to bite than anything else I've ever kept -- he's not head shy either, but they're ridiculous creatures who only eat when they feel like it and the mock striking scares people. I get it. Overall, I wholeheartedly with you. This isn't how you introduce people to snakes the right way. ANTM just doesn't care about that. They'd rather traumatize and break those girls.

Why did a comment made about "her skin tone/skin color has to be a special specifically certain way exactly, just because she has a darker skin tone" according to Tyra on a reality show cause real world problems for her? Anyone listening to that line clearly knows is both stereotyping, colorist & featuring, all of which are awful & taking anything seriously when said like that is just dumb on the believers part.... Who on earth would really consider cause Tyra said black people have to have certain traits, that obviously has to be true? How can anyone have an opinion about someone's skin texture not being butter, & just automatically believe it to be true when it's definitely objective & not factually proven?? Besides, to me meaning greasy, kinda sweaty & moist looking & more un-naturally jaundiced than the Simpsons is what I think when hearing someone's skin is like butter. @@Rosemarie-KZbin- So, obviously, the beauty industry is very based on looks. Tyrah was essentially accusing her of having dry skin that negatively affects how she is photographed, and how makeup looks on her. Even if that's not true, if that's the first thing a makeup brand or skincare brand hears about you, they might not be interested in working with you. Some of that is super irrational, but the rational part is that even if Ebony sent in a gorgeous photograph with an application, people looking at applications know that photos can be touched up. They might trust a so called expert like Tyrah, who has seen Ebony in person, than what they're seeing with their own eyes in a photo. So it's sad, but I can see how that comment could have affected her career.

That said, as someone with acne scarring myself, I don't actually want the privilege of getting to be a model, I'll pass on that one. But there are other subtler things - whether you're viewed as attractive, whether you're viewed as dirty, etc. I would never try to compare having acne scars to being a person of color or a person in poverty though. @@melodyvalentine8779 The privilege legit is "being treated with basic respect". Going out with acne, or scars from it sometimes means people are going to point at you and tell their kids "this is what you'll look like if you keep touching your skin" or having random people with clear skin or acne say stuff like "eek, did you see that person? Their skin is so ugly and oddly pigmented". I don't even have that much of an issue but continuously hearing those things made me obsess over my skin to the point I was so absolutely terrified of leaving my house. Whenever I went outside I'd do anything possible to hide as much of my skin as possible. That could easily have happened, absolutely. This show was a really bad offender when it came to cutting out parts of sentences, or even saying they'd said something completely different, because they overdubbed it after the fact. So Tyra might have seemed like she said something to the women in the judging room, when she actually recorded it at a different time and in a different place. You could sometimes really tell - the room tone was different. Like the difference between recorded in a bathroom or a bedroom - you can tell one has a lot more reverberation (or whatever the techie term is!)

I'm glad they handled the snakes with care - a scared person is not the savest place for a snake. I'd never put a snake on someone who's scared of them. It's not helping a person who's scared. Instead, usually, if people are given the chance to interact with a snake on their own terms, they'll get curious about them. In this setting however, since most of the girls had to wait around anyway, I'd have started with the girl who has a pet snake and follow up with those who are comfortable with the idea of having a snake on them. The others should have gotten introduced to the snakes in the meantime. See how the skin of a living snake feels, that it moves slowly if you move slowly, that it poses no threat. I bet it would have made the models feel more comfortable and a bit more secure. All in all, this shoot wasn't handled terribly, imo (which was a surprise, not gonna lie).

They should've said what they meant. They thought that she was too dark to be able to see the recreation of the makeup and that it was too dark for the retouching. Though she doesn't have need for retouching anyway. The photographer just needed to take a good photo of her. She's the only dark skinned person and they bring up "skin texture". We all know it's about how dark she is. She looks like she has the smoothest skin texture. Even though Tyra mentioned that the color is beautiful. I don't believe her when she said that. She was just trying to cover her and everyone else’s butts from having people say they mean that she's too dark. We're still gonna believe that 'cause the texture thing doesn't make any sense.

I got very used to having one around my neck for hours. You tend to get to know them, their behaviour and more or less how they feel. I think they really notice when people are scared or nervous. They prefer to be around calm people. And they need breaks from time to time. I never was scared of them. I got only bitten once, but that was completely my mistake. I wasn't paying attention and made a stupid obvious mistake. The snake just thought my finger was a second snack. With the help of a colleague we got the fangs out slowly and the snake and I were fine. I didn't touch that particular snake for a week or two after. but then got my confidence back again.

Tyra has mentioned how she learned to do her makeup before a show by watching Yasmeen Ghauri. While the legend Iman said how she would do other black models makeup before runway. So I'm assuming that's where the challenge/test idea came from.

And I mean, she blended the makeup really good and did the lip beautifully, but there are limits to what can you do with the color you were given.

Veterinarian (and former photographer) here. The snakes used for these shoots are all super chill and unlikely to bite - as shady as it is to make models photograph with their fears, the OSHA regulations would have meant they had to seek out snakes that are socialised and don't freak out being handled at all. They wouldn't have wanted a lawsuit had any of the models been bitten. It's also likely that they ensured the room wasn't hot and humid, but a bit on the cool side which makes the snakes a little bit sleepy/timid/relaxed, and I didn't see any of them being particularly active. They were making maximum contact with the models in an attempt to get some heat. I might be biased because I love when I get to see a snake at work, but the snakes stole the show for me. But as a former professional photographer (now hobbyist who occasionally gets commissions), I really cannot condone putting models in a situation where they feel like there is potentially a risk to their safety (even if the situation is 100% safe and controlled). It's psychologically damaging and is absolutely not an industry standard. The only time I have seen a model in a potentially risky situation has been on ANTM or when a model has commissioned a photographer for a concept shoot for their portfolio.

I'm not completely sure about this next bit, but I vaguely remember seeing her talk about how she did go through rehab right before ANTM, and was still being treated with medication. She was not allowed to bring the medication into the house, so she took a chance, as she thought she could handle it. It lasted about 5 days, as the medication took a long time to leave her body/detox (I don't know the medical term for it, apologies). When it did, she basically went into withdrawals from not getting the rehab medication. I don't know what happened after, but since she was fine the rest of the time, I think they let her have the medication.

People who can't do beauty shots are people who don't meet Tyra's beauty standards, of course! It's not like they're impossible for a human being to achieve... Or that they change so that no model meets her standards...

They act like the models have been given the access and wealth to the high quality skincare products that model like Tyra have. It's weird that they are expected to be amateur but experienced.

Thank you for continuing to expose Tyra's toxic antics on ANTM. I swear it seemed like people were so quick to forgive it and brush it under the rug. I just found that to be incredibly disturbing.

The editing on the pictures is so different. It's like the different stages of photoshop learning. And that positivity really did a UNO reverse, but in truth, the positive comments were the oddity here. The "supposed to"s kill me. They always have to shame them for what they do, don't, and were "supposed" to already have.

I like this shoot. It's low budget, which makes sense since it's the first season, but it's very realistic. They don't have more going on in the photo shoot than they need. I feel like they didn't fully think through how the snakes related to the concept. I think the reason the cropping is all over the place was that they wanted to have shots where the snakes were well featured and there weren't as many of those where the snakes were in super close. They could have anticipated needing a wider frame for the larger snakes.

If I remember right, they (production or someone) told Adrian that she needed to show up to judging or she would be eliminated. So them praising her for being there while sick, is just disgusting.

Iconic photo shoot. But as someone who has skin issues, it isn’t nice for someone to call out your skin texture. I don’t even like showing my doctor, but they do their best to help me.

This is horrible & I’m so sad she went through that. There are also things the MUA/Lighting Team/Photohrapher could have done to decrease texture other than complain. But ultimately I’m glad we have started embracing texture.

@@visualbeauty3427 Welcome to the road of self acceptance/neutrality. It is not an easy path for many, but it is the most rewarding. Every step counts, but keep that big image in focus and the progress will come. It also gets so much easier if you’re able to find people with these same values.

It’s crazy to see how much Tyra was involved in the first 3 cycles. Later on she really only was there for panel and sometimes she would photograph a shoot, then have a random check in. I feel as a host she should have actually been at the photo shoots/challenges.

some snakes are more social than others, but i think it’s good insight into the relationship they have with their handlers. my only issue is the makeup and glitter getting on them.

I notice that Tyra will often will tell women with really dark brown eyes that they have no life in their eyes. And you almost never hear that for the girls with like light brown eyes, blue or green eyes. Just a thought.

I don't even see any texture on Ebony's skin, but assuming she has bad skin texture, there is literally nothing she can do about it. This is coming from someone who has been going to all sorts of clinics and dermatologists throughout my adult life trying to fix my skin texture (acne scarring, large pores, sun damage, etc). I've had peels and laser treatments and derma rollers and light therapy and if anything they just made it worse and were too expensive. Even in the best case scenario, these treatments might help slightly and temporarily but nothing will ever really fix it - once your skin is damaged in those ways there's really no going back, it's permanent irreversible damage. So Tyra saying "your skin texture needs work" is like telling a short person "your height needs work".
