God, yeah, why they did do it this way? Considering that Djikstra and his elite Redainian fighters got soloed by Geralt in the books now he's coming at him with a bunch of cutthroats while Geralt has two elite fighters alongside him

If Dijkstra had been in character he would have: (1) only acted after Geralt had left (2) sent wayyy more guards than he did and (3) left the scene immediately or not turned up at all. Any one of those reasonable things would have kept him alive but we're left with the brain-dead 4th option of "none of the above".

@@ischi6200 Tbf he was fighting a pissed off Lambert and Geralt, had no armor and presumably didn't fight for a while whereas witcher in the cave had a demon occupying him and presumably meditated relentlessly. He could use the bombs he had on him though that would be cool.

Following the Thread has always felt like it was missing some stitches, if you catch my meaning. The fact that we never encounter Aiden, Karadin’s band or the consequences of any of their actions lessens the motivation for the player, if the other issues with the quest weren’t enough.

Following the thread as a quest is encountered way earlier than Skellige, but blocks a quest there. End result would be you stumbling on this quest, getting invested with Lambert, pushing it to the point of him asking you to investigate the Skellige slaver, and you can no longer do an associated quest with the slavers there.

The quest always felt "off" to me. Inconsistent, strange or missing dialogue choices... Seems like a abandoned and forgotten quest. I never actually noticed the sword on the wife, lol.

Personally, this is one of my favourite quests because it's one of the few where there isn't an obviously right answer because all you have is he-said she-said evidence from unreliable sources. That said, the Hammond / slavers always felt off, like there should be much more there than ended up in the game, and the weird guard interaction that also felt like it was missing lines. I get the impression that they changed their mind about key parts of the quest late in development - e.g. making Keradin's change of heart be genuine.

The one I remember being obnoxious is finding a drunken creature for some halflings, it took me an embarrassingly long time to find the trail across some water, which was mandatory to open the door I already guessed the monster was behind IIRC

You make a lot of good points in this one, some of which I've tried to correct for on my own and still others I've never even thought about. On the two closest ones being the two who don't know where he is, I always assumed Lund and Vienne actually knew where he was all along and just thought that whatever a couple witchers could do to them would pale in comparison to what Karadin might have done to them for outing him to an enemy (questions of reformed or not and whether Karadin or Lambert is telling the more accurate rendition of what happened to Aiden aside, he surely has to have some incredibly dark deeds in his history if he got someone like Hammond to see him as a superior). An alternative thought on Vienne in particular... it's entirely possible she's so fisstech'd out of her mind that she genuinely doesn't know because she's losing her grip on reality. I mean, did you look at that table? It looks like a blizzard hit it. For Karadin's letter to Hammond, I was never able to find anything in it but I always assumed there had to be a secret code in there somewhere. After all, if Karadin was indeed living the double life of pretending to be a respectable merchant while continuing to do shady stuff with Hammond on the side, it'd be too much to risk to send him a letter with a straightforward message in it. It's a long way to Skellige and I'm sure that note passed through a few different hands along the way from Karadin's hands to Hammond's - hands that may have been controlled by a brain that may have been wondering what an upstanding member of the upper classes was doing exchanging letters with one of the vilest brutes in Skellige. Since I was never actually able to find a code, though, I ended up wondering if maybe it was something easily lost in translation, like maybe phrases used had a dual meaning in the original iteration or something like an acrostic cypher. Also, I have somehow never once noticed that Karadin's wife has a sword and it blows my mind that I've never seen that. I've played that quest about 7 times myself and watched it being played at least another 4 and yet somehow that completely escaped my attention. It does seem reasonable to me, though, that regardless of whether Karadin is reformed or a liar, he'd have good reason to arm and train her to defend herself as needed. While I do have to agree with you that there are plenty of issues that definitely put this in the running for worst quest, I still personally have a soft spot for it, because setting all those issues aside, I still enjoy the relationship building (or utter destruction, depending on how you play it) that you have with Lambert in this quest.

The contradictions in the telling of the story always made sense to me and actually I think made the quest better, because I was constanly suspicious and trying to figure out, who is lying and what truth is bent into shape. I mean, the whole point for out two witchers is to find the criminal. The whole point for the criminals is to pull their neck out of the noose as believable as possible. So of course no one will tell the full truth unconditionally when interrogated, even when they changed their ways. Actually especially then, to disstance from the past deeds and protect th new life. 🤔 Also, Lamberts information in the beginning is based on basically rumours. So I don't think it makes the quest bad, but instead makes the characters unreliable narrators and more "human".

IMO it's definitely better seeming to be truly genuine but that does leave it one of the few truly grey moral decisions in the game, so I would not be surprised if in an earlier iteration Keradin was still working with his mates and wife was an accomplice.

What I find most annoying about this quest is that it bugs the "Flesh for Sale" quest in Skellige. You receive this quest very early, and if you go to Skellige with it activated, you do not receive "Flesh for Sale". And if you have already completed "Flesh for Sale", you cannot fast travel to Trottheim, or it will not activate the initial conversation with the pirates, leaving the quest marker bugged, and forcing you to skip some points in the quest, going straight to the clearing on the mountain where Hammond is if you want to finish it.

The var Attres? If I recall correctly, Rosa was originally supposed to be romanceable, but they changed it. I find it a nice narrative choice, to be honest. You think things are going in the romance direction, but then she shows an ugly side, Geralt rebukes her, and she gets pissed off and leaves. That's how it goes in life, sometimes. Also, I'm pretty sure she's a teenager, so....

I agree that the pieces don't fit in this quest. I always kill Karadin because the way he presents himself doesn't feel genuine. It borders on creepy at points. Maybe that's what they were counting on here, that people wouldn't like/believe him. Or they were trying to make a quest that left you asking questions to the real story, but still there were too many loose ends and it wasn't satisfying. If you haven't played Gwent with Lambert yet, you can play right on the spot of Karadin's killing, which I found amusing.

Great video. A very perceptive explanation which makes me rethink about this quest and other Witcher 3 quests as a whole. Anyway, there's something that I want to point out. Maybe somebody else had pointed it out before, but maybe I'm just overlooking into it. There's a comment in your video a long time ago from a viewer who read the books. Said viewer mentioned that based on the books, Geralt had a shoulder injury. And if you let Geralt idle for a while in TW3 game, he starts moving his shoulders. It might imply something, or just simple movements in a game character. Oh, I've recently played the Next Gen game (after loosing 5 years worth of saved games due to a ransomware virus) and I noticed that you can actually trample over poultry and goat/lambs when riding Roach and loot them after. That's interestingly new to me.

What i think it is happening here is that we are missing an element, item, something, probably in Skillege. And the quest is bugged in a way Geralt reverts to tells Lambert the story as if we found it. That may also explain some of the missing dialog choices too, simply put, i think we are missing something. As for Karadin, he is lying, he is expecting someone that wants revenge and still dosent get the wife and kids to leave the place inmidiatelly? no way. The wife dosent say anything, she is looking down, the kids arent doing anything just standing there. If Karadin was telling the truth he would have told the wife to leave inmidiatelly with the kids, and instead he used them to try to convince Lambert and Geralt. Ge'els cared more about his model than Karadin cared of his family. Also he were close to Lund and Vienne, to the point he at least learn one of the two got killed. Otherwise how did he knew? You can find Hammond before meeting Lambert the first time? either before starting the quest, or right after starting it.

Last time I did the quest, I went to Crach first and asked him about Hammond, then for some reason I had to reload a previous save and forgot to talk to him, and by the time I realized it was too late and I didn't want to replay however many hours I'd have to do, and Crach had nothing to say about ending his slave trade in that case.

4:52 maybe in earlier versions of quest it might have been possible for Geralt to be decieved, depening how he obtained information of current status between Hammond and Karadin. Maybe even tied with "Flesh for Sale". 8:42 Karadin is a witcher, so he likely knew if these 2 witchers show up to kill him, they'll get him eventually. Might have bet everything on "changed man" act. Deadly Delights is also clearly missing some context IMO. Succubus claims self-defense, but if you did optional part to talk Guard's medic, he will claim killed guards were drained rather than burned. Similar issue with missing herbalist quest. Cannibals claim they'd starve otherwise, but their basement is not lacking in food. Can't call them out on lying.

I gotta say, after 9 years of this game being out and me playing it on and off throughout those years, one quest has really gotten boring to me. And that is most of the novigrad main quest line. Especially broken flowers, it really does feel very tedious nowadays. The parts with djikstra are still amazing, his banter with Geralt is genuinely one of my favorite parts of the entire game. Same with the Priscilla song. But everything else in my opinion just feels kind of boring and or tedious , even Priscilla says "so you have to find X person to find Y to eventually find Z? Sounds like a lot of work". Which it very much is. It really does feel that way after you know everything you have to do. I know elihal and the teacher are skippable, doesn't make it any less tedious.

I have not done the research that you have done for this quest, obviusly, but i do remember being less than satisfied when it ended, felt all wrong and now I know why. Last playthrough i did of witcher 3 i did ALL the quest i was able to find, think it took me about 200hours to do. And i dont have to tell you how many of them are great, even the ones you only accedently stumble upon. But this here was really werid all togeather, didnt really matter what you did, and that felt all wrong when all the other quests are so great! thanks Letalis for another great video! i've gone through this quest at least three times. it bugged out 'Flesh for Sale' for me the first time, so i had to 'redo it' entirely from a save over 2 days old. that PISSED me off bad! needless to say, Jad felt the weight of my ire. ;D the third time i let him off the hook. i entirely agree with every point you made Letalis. especially the one about the quest not feeling complete enough. i think the writers for this quest needed to stop and look at the finished product in great detail by playing it through three or four times. they messed it up in too many places.

Hey xLetalis, I noticed a little detail with the saddle that Gaunter O'Dimm gives you, and it came when I was fighting bandits at Fox Hollow in Toussaint. When ome of the bandits came close to Roach with the saddle on, the bandit got attacked by Roach by some fire attack from the looks of it. The Bandit wasn't behind Roach, he was on the side of Roach. Edit: There was also an Axii affect too. And it happened the same way it did with the fire damage affect.

The Lambert quest is solid only thing that annoys me is Skellige travel just to kill a guy Also not related but interesting detail I can`t remember if the video was made about: In Quest "Now or Never" if you kill the hunters right before entering the house to talk with Triss the people taking Triss necklace actually will mention this(you can anger the hunters using any sign)

I generally don't ignore quests, unless it's the ones I truly know by heart and that are somewhat "simpler" Even that one time that I did do these quests I.... Tbh I sided with Dijkstra on that one I felt that Roche betrayed me, to be honest I played my Geralt throught W1 to W3 as a Northern Kingdoms sympathizer, so when I learnt that Roche sold out his ideas for personal gain and 'assurances' of some independace, well that was too much, and the ending I got (I didn't know beforhand) was the best for the North.

@@Tyanus2 Well, that's kind of ironic, because the Poles are known for their fights for independence even when they know it's futile. If Vernon Roche was a Pole he probably would have fought both Redania and Nilfgaard as a guerilla and left Temeria burned, dead and defeated like it was after the first Nilfgaard-Northern Realms war, but worse. In the world of Witcher, the idea of vassal states is very prevalent with the first example being Toussaint. In this case, Nilfgaard is very similar to the Ottoman Empire which had vassals of many different cultures. In those terms, for Temeria, being a vassal of Nilfgaard is better than Redania winning. Also, this quest felt dumb from the beginning where Thaler and Roche didn't even think of ways to win the war and Djikstra apparently had a masterplan to win it and thought it better to be greedy than get 2 of Temeria's best weapons (the spy and the warrior) to fight the war for him in exchange for land which stands in between Redania and Nilfgaard. This quest was very poorly written with the only reason for it being so, because they wanted multiple choices of Northern Realms' future. So they simplified the complex politics down to 1 nonsensical choice, which is horrendous

I *LOVE* quests in this series where you never know if you did the right thing. I love looking at every detail to reach a conclusion, and discussing with people online about which choice is right. It's a real shame they botched this one, it would have made for a really interesting discussion. As it is, it's not really worth thinking about that hard.

I was finally able to get a reward for killing Hammond. Once you kill him go directly to Crach at Kaer Trolde, not Lambert. The dialogue option "took care of Hammond" comes up. He gives 200 gold.

I do most of my editing in paint.net, which is kinda like a lightweight photoshop :) I also use PhotoDiva for some facial editing occasionally, and I use Nvidia's Ansel to take some high quality screenshots even in the midsts of cutscenes, also ty :)

The shady individual being a boss is something you can see in some rogue places, where smugglers and bandits had some influence in government and positions. You can see that from Elite Squad, where a police officer (captain) was below an ordinary tow truck driver, as the this guy works for the colonel. 😂

Maybe the letter is only to keep his new persona more “noble”. He probably is a kingpin. The skelliga guy didn’t have the good manner to filter the communication. He probably knew someone would come to revenge the other Witcher.

For me the worst quest will always be the ghost pirate on a pirate ship one, that entire quest line I found difficult to path find, I have an extremely hard time with some of the enemies along the way and when I finally got past them I killed the boss without any effort.

I agree this quest is so weird especially with how geralt can say "you can choose lambart" or something along those lines and then you instantly have to choose the outcome, btw yes the quest with hammond and crach is bugged, i returned for a reward like crach promised yet get no dialogue option to talk about Hammond

Couldn't agree with you more. I always felt unsure and frustrated playing this quest. I really hoped they'd fix that. I was unaware that you could talk with Hammond. He only ever attacked me in all my playthroughs. Very frustrating. Also I always wondered how Lambert knew about the details of what happened to Aiden. Did he find his body and deduce what happened? There were no witnesses other than Karadin's lot, no?

@@GeraltofRivia22 I don't know why they don't change it. The Witcher 3 is close to perfection. Fix the rushed quests, fix the difficulty scaling for higher levels, fix Roach, fix the remaining graphics bugs, and this game will be even closer to perfection.

I feel this quest was meant to be an experiment in the same vein as Open Sesame! from Hearts of Stone. It's a quest where Geralt isn't the main character and as a result, things fall apart quickly. It's Lambert's story and Geralt is just along for the ride to help him out, no matter how contradictory it gets and how insufficient your options are for gathering information. Geralt is a detective, while Lambert is a hitman on a revenge spree, details be damned.

For me, Crach gave Geralt the reward for Hammond's head, but it only worked later, after the quest "King's Gambit".

You forgot to add Karadin’s expression when you choose to spare him. It shows an expression of relief and regret, not smug or smirking thinking that his ruse is successful. That alone makes me spare him on my every playthrough.
