And I think half of those were by Susan St James in that atrocious Roddy Piper vs Mr. T boxing match. 😆Vince was so obsessed with celebrities that he put a bunch of people on the mic who had no business being there and knew nothing about wrestling. Of course, to me the best part of WM2 is about three rounds into the boxing match the crowd starts chanting, "Roddy! Roddy! Roddy!" Piper later said that was the start of fans forcing his babyface turn.

Oh, I loved WrestleMania V. You could argue that's nostalgia, I suppose. It _was_ the first wrestling PPV I watched, and I got to see it on closed-circuit TV at Boutwell Auditorium. I didn't know all the wrestlers yet, I had only vague ideas of who I did and didn't care about. But man, I loved it. In fact WMs 3-6 are what I think of when I think of what an ideal WrestleMania should look like (yes, I loved WM4, too). I don't mind the undercards at any of these events, and all of them entertained me perfectly well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ At 5, that Blue Blazer vs Mr. Perfect match was a HUGE part of what made me truly fall in love what this sport/pasttime/entertainment/thing (though, it would be the Rockers and Bret Hart moving forward that really kept my attention week after week).

Wrestlemania V was a huge event. 1989 was the absolute peak of the Rock 'N Wrestling era. Hogan vs Savage is still probably the best feud in company history, and they put on an excellent match. The rest of the matches on the card were all solid. All the stars of that era were on the show. I'd take WM5 over any of the bland stadium shows of the last 15 years.
@fergalstackstreams
@fergalstackstreams Жыл бұрын
That was the first WM I rented from the video store after I became a wrestling fan, so I have a lot of nostalgia for it too. But just looking at the card objectively, there's not a lot to get excited about besides the main event. I kind of miss the early days when each WM had its own personality. They all kind of blur together after about 2005 or so.
@Goldnfoxx
@Goldnfoxx Жыл бұрын
@@fergalstackstreams See, I just disagree about the undercard. I think we just get excited about different things. I'll take Hercules vs Haku a hundred times over before I take some of the standard fare of later Manias. Part of growing up in the South, I suppose. You just learn to appreciate very different things about wrestling.

Dear Mr. Bios, I honetly belive that you are the first KZbinr who is involved with wrestling content, who looks at a worst wresltemania's list and talks positively about the events. For example WM27 was torn to shreds by others, saying that there is no redeeming qualities about that show. (saying the wwe championship match and the miz were aweful, undertaker vs triple h is the same as at WM 17 and not rating either the edge vs del rio and punk vs orton matches). Thank you for bringing positivity to the scene, been a subscriber for 2-3 months know and I nearly caught up with your reliving the war series (that just shows you that I can't stop watching the episodes, they are so good) Overall, it's a pretty long message, so to keep the ending brief, thank you for bringing positivity to my (and many other's life) and keeping us entertained. As a kid that watched WM9 when it happened I absolutely loved it. It was different to any other show they’d put on at the time and even the main event hyped me up. WM9 was fantastic as a kid too. Giant Gonzales had a look and fear factor around him that Undertakers other big man opponents like Bundy really didn't. The whole show looked great. The Bret vs Yoko match is actually excellent, the way Bret chose to work it. As a kid I didn't think much of the Hogan ending either way though I think I was a bigger Bret fan by then. There's no soul in modern Wrestlemanias - they're all in a stadium, they all have the same "HD" quality, they all have the same lighting and feel. You can't tell one apart from the other day. The whole match wasn't the most entertaining but it was all building up until the last few minutes, which is still one of the most intense moments in wrestling. It also featured the return of the Ultimate Warrior, and the return of Roddy Piper.

Also WrestleMania 22 was worse than 5 for me. Some matches have stupid outcomes like Edge vs Mick Foley and Booker T with Sharmell vs The Boogeyman. And some matches went on a little too long, artificially extended, like the ladder match where Ric Flair hurts his leg then shows back up, and collectively everyone got knocked off the ladder like 8 times when 4-6 would have been more appropriate. Shawn Michaels against Mr. McMahon, Shane, and those cheerleading guys was cool though, the highlight of the whole event for me. Ok now make the Paul Bearer video. You know you wanna.

Not really mentioned in the comments or on the video but WM7 was really not great either. They overbooked the card which on the night led to a lot of them getting cut down to about 4-5 minutes. The only match that saved it was the career ending match between Ultimate Warrior vs Macho KING Randy Savage which was really well built up from Royal Rumble, particularly with Sherri's help throughout. The main event was Hulk Hogan vs Sgt Slaughter which was a nod to the Gulf War but didnt really have any energy in it to wow the crowd.

So, as mediocre Wrestlemania 3 may have been, it is very memorable. One great match. A few good to great storylines. Andre being slammed by Hogan on an international level. Steamboat and Savage in an epic battle. The only disappointment was a count out finish between Hercules and Billy Jack Haynes. Good video, Bios.

100% agree with your opinion on WMXI. Apart from Diesel vs HBK there really isn't anything else. Pamela Anderson looked about as happy to be there as I am every time i'm confronted with Broccoli on my dinner plate - Not at all interested in other words! WMXII was the first Wrestlemania i ever watched all the way through on VHS at a friend's house. I don't mind the Iron Man Match between Bret and Shawn but it certainly isn't the best match ever and there are points in the match where i switch off. I liked Diesel vs Taker and I still laugh at the sheer madness that is the Hollywood Backlot Brawl between Goldust and Roddy Piper. WMXV is 'aight. Rock/Austin 1 is good, if overbooked slightly. The opening hardcore triple threat is fine too. Gotta feel for poor Bart Gunn though. How you can punish somebody for winning a shoot fighting tournament still gets me. There's a poignant moment just before the Butterbean debacle where we saw Gorilla Monsoon for what i believe was his last televised appearance(?). They also botched some potentially great secondary storylines. I think most fans fully expected to see Savage vs Steamboat in a rematch of WM3, since they were paired in the same half of the bracket. Would have been a great babyface vs babyface angle, even for just one match. Instead, Steamboat loses, and Savage quickly beats Valentine (who granted, I think is awesome) in a match that meant nothing. I think a Steamboat vs Savage in the semifinals would have been spectacular. Savage gets his redemption, but it's another bitter slog and he's completely gassed going into the finals, creating more storyline tension.

*For my money, HHH vs Reigns at ‘Mania 32 is the worst WrestleMania main event EVER. Sure people argue that there are other ‘Mania main events that are way worse but when it comes to this match, it’s just an absolute chore to get through. It was a WrestleMania main event that the fans didn’t wanna see. An end result to a WrestleMania main event the fans didn’t want to see. The company was so out of touch at the point that they made it clear that they didn’t care what the fans wanted and they just told us to just shut up and deal with it. With the runtime of the match dragging on for 27 agonizing minutes, it resulted in one of, if not the worst ‘Mania main event ever. They really just should’ve had Dean Ambrose vs HHH in the main event of that year’s ‘Mania since he was clearly the most over babyface. A babyface whom the fans were actually cheering for. He was ready to breakout and WWE really held him back so Reigns could get all the glory. It also didn’t help the fact that WWE completely MUTED the booing fans in the main event of WrestleMania for God’s sake. SMH.* 🙄

It was certainly a choice to use WM15 to continue storylines, probably wouldn't happen now where people watch Wrestlemania and nothing more. They wouldn't have a clue what's happening. I'm glad WM16 isn't here, as I think it gets too much criticism. There was a mentality to get EVERYONE on the card but I can't really blame them as that's what I used to do creating PPVs in wrestling games. There were a couple of Heat-style tag matches that maybe didn't need to be there but the triangle ladder match, IC/Euro titles two fall triple threat, Hardcore battle royal, fatal four way main event....are highlights, and who can forget Head Cheese. But, like the '99 Rumble, I think the heel main event win majorly sours people on it. Backlash 2000 seems to be much more popular, if it was a Mania it may be a top 10.

It's beyond silly to judge and rate historic WrestleManias, especially from the 80s, by "modern standards" because it's barely even the same business. It's apples and oranges. Knocking an event like the first WrestleMania for a "lack of technical wrestling" or other such nonsense is like knocking a romantic comedy for a lack of action scenes and expolosions; that just wasn't the intention of the event. That's not why it exists. Wrestling has changed so much over the decades, starting from the early 1900s to now in 2023, it's the same business, but also not the same business. Even then change from the 80s to the 90s was immense, and the 80s were different from the 70s. And the 2000s made the 90s unrecognizable. Wrestling historically was simply a live event attraction, instead of a performance art that nerds would watch back and rate with a magnifying glass. That largely started in the 2000s. In North America, I mean. I have never followed Japanese wrestling. I just - I dunno, man. Wrestling fans, man.

Another note on Wrestlemania 2, unlike with Starrcade 85 & 86, it was in three different timezones so that definitely didn't help plus for the west coast feed, they didn't get the New York & Chicago matches until after the live Los Angeles show so their main event was the Bulldogs/Valentine & Beefcake tag match. There used to be videos on this site of what the west coast feed had and I'm surprised WWE never did anything with it. One of the videos I remember seeing was of a promo with Hogan after his match.
