Re: the squibs thing, I dunno if squibs specifically existed, but Sanjuro came out 2 years before this, which had the super famous katana-inflicted blood spray scene, so surely they could have done *something*. I mean it cuts away from him to show the mobsters shooting, cut back and he's got holes in his shirt, could have been that simple.
