Before the unification of Germany, the watch industry in Glashutte was centralized under one brand: GUB, and Lange was a sorte of a spin-off of GUB. Glashutte original was created from what was left of GUB after A. Lange & Sohne separated. So the panoreserve and the panomatic are actually original designs based on GUB’s heritage.

I think part of the reason they don't really state the founding year very clearly, is that it's actually pretty difficult to define in this case. Is it 1994 or maybe 1951? To be fair, A Lange & Söhne doesn't exactly advertise the fact that it was actually (re-)founded in 1990.

Walter Lange bailed to the west before the formation of East Germany. Afterwards the Glashutte companies were centralized into GUB, thus in a way, GO has more of a right to the designs of GUB compared to that carpetbagger Walter Lange (not judging Walter for bailing before the Soviet takeover). I obviosuly own a GO hence my hand wringing mental gymnastics.

To the best of my knowledge, Glashutte Original, as a brand, came into being after the unification of Germany in the early 90s. Prior to that, all watchmaking in Glashutte was under the GUB brand, as part of the communist era. The GUB also incorporated A Lange & Sohne, and technically Glashutte Original is the legal successor to Ferdinand Lange's company, with Lange a whole new company. Watchmaking has been an industry in Glashutte since the 19th century. The term "Glashutte original" comes from the fact that watchmaking from the area was so well respected that other companies adopted its styling, so in the same way Swiss brands use "Swiss made" to identify the quality of their products, watchmakers in Glashutte adopted "Glashutte original" - as in, these are the originators of the styling and manufacturing. When the Communist party took over Germany, all the watchmakers in Glashutte were combined into the one company - GUB. After reunification, Lange split off and became (or revived) A Lange & Sohne, while most of the other companies that had been consumed into GUB remained together and rebranded as Glashutte Original.

19:18 that is exactly the story. Other regions and countries were copying Glashutte and using the name "Glashutte Process" to indicate that the way the watch was made was in the Glashutte style. GO became a stamp to indicate the actual region the watch was made from.

The modern name "Glashütte Original" is a reference back to the early days of watchmaking in the Glashütte region. In an attempt to sell inferior movements for a premium price, other less renown watchmaking areas were adding the terms "System Glashütte" to their timepieces and often simulating traditional Glashütte decoration and finishing work. As a response, the watchmaking houses in Glashütte started inscribing the word "Original" to their watch movements and clockwork to indicate a given timepiece was really from Glashütte

Was ready to jump on the “DateJust isn’t entry Rolex” comment, but the context to what you meant is so true! When I was first getting into watches, the sub was as “The” watch I wanted and the DJ was meh. I didn’t have a clue about OP, Explorer or Air King etc. A couple of years later and really getting into this hobby, I truly believe that the DJ is far more versatile and prettier, now The DJ is really the only Rolex I will purchase.

I totally agree. The Submariner was the watch that got me into watches, but i've noticed over time that i'm just not that much into dive watches (and i prefer the GMT-Master anyway). But the Datejust with the fluted white gold bezel and jubilee bracelet is a gorgeous watch. But i also really love the 36mm vintage models. In my opinion, other brands make better dress watches, or better field watches, or even more interesting dive watches (Sinn or GO come to mind). But in the category of GADA-watches, the Datejust reigns supreme. The only other watch that comes close is the new Aqua Terra with the black lacquer dial - but that one doesn't have the fluted bezel.

My understanding is that Glashutte Original is a descendant of all the Eastern German brands including Lange after they were unified into one state company (GUB) ( under communist control) until Germany's reunification after which Lange split off as an independent brand leaving what was left as Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb which uses the brand name Glashutte Original. Or, at least that's how I remember it. I got most of this from watching Tim Mosso.

They are the original. Tim Mosso has stated the story many times. Also, comparing their price to a Rolex Submariner is a joke because the workmanship is not in the same world. The Rolex is machine made. If it had a glass back the Glashutte would make it look like a Timex. I have 3 Rolex watches and 1 Panolunar in gold.

I love GO. My biggest problem is when JLC offer similar products for a similar price point but with an 8 year warranty and the story to go with the watches I buy JLC every time. If GO increased their warranties to match a JLC it would make them a far more interesting proposition when forking out £8000

I partially agree - I love both brands. My biggest issue with JLC is their QC and after-sales service leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of examples on the forums too. I had a less than stellar experience after a 4 month old Reverso started having an issue with its case. I also had a poor experience with Panerai so maybe it’s a Richemont thing - I had another forum member share his horrible experience with VC after having a problem. I’ve never had issues with Swatch Group service so that alone would tilt me to GO.

The Glashutte segment of this episode bothered me so much I had to come back and write this. From Michael seemingly surprised (how does someone in the biz not know GO well), how is it a copy (rip off??) of Lange One, though similar, not arguing that. Also, SeaQ same price as Sub? Except the GO details are off the charts, it's a vintage design (from GUP I think) and you CAN'T GET a Sub! Talk pre-owned, there's not even a question. Although the assessment on their branding is spot on everything else was shaking at best. Lange and GO were the same compani until Germany unification in the 90s, they have as much right to be there and use that design as ALS. Sorry for the drawn-out post but I love G.O. not a company to show off your wealth but to enjoy true artisanship and watchmaking .

A lot of the history was said here. Some of the GUB watchmakers went to Lange, the eastern factory of GUB and the remainder watchmakers made GO. They used to tell more about the history of Lange and how the factory is the original but I’m sure trademark infringements require they don’t speak of it anymore. Their quality is way up there. What made Lange the premier brand is they pushed horology not just for the Germans, but where the first fly back date graph challenged the trinity to up their game. Hence, Lange is regarded the higher brand and rightfully so. To me, GO is a little lost and a used one is probably one of the best values you can ever get .

When it comes to German watches have a look at Dornbluth & Sohn, in an age when high end watches are made by computers and then put together by a person, these are genuinely hand made by artisans in house. Incredible value and the history is fascinating.

I second this - Dornbluth and Sohne make some exceptional watches, not just for the price point, but overall. They're all handmade by a very small team, and the quality and attention to detail is outstanding. Also, if budget could stretch to it, Moritz Grossman and Lang & Heyne make small batches of watches that rival - or even beat - A Lange Sohne, nevermind the mass produced, so-called Holy Trinity of PP, AP and VC. Even Tutima has higher-end offerings like minute repeaters that could be from the House of Stern. German watchmaking has different aesthetics to Swiss watchmaking, but the quality cannot be denied.

I followed much the same logic when I thought of buying a. Rolex. I don't have mad money, but the OP just seems too "entry level." Getting a Datejust says you didn't cheap out. You got a real Rolex. I got on the list for one, but I've kinda given up on the brand honestly. The AD experience is terrible, and I don't feel right giving them my money. And (no offense) I don't want to go vintage. So I'm buying an Omega Aqua Terra tomorrow, which to me is a much better watch, and while it doesn't tell the world I've made it as well as a Rolex would, I've decided that's not as important as treating myself to a comfortable buying experience. Also we have the same birthday. That and our love for watches are probably the only thing we have in common. ;-)

So glad to hear your comments on the Datejust. Let's face it no Rolex is easy to get and they are all quality timepieces and expensive. For me, the Datejust fit my style anesthetic the best. Still had to wait 3 months for it. I would love to get a GMT or Daytona next but if it doesn't happen it's not the end of the world. I would be happy with the Datejust. I am tired of "only a Datejust" comments or even worse "only a ladies Datejust."

I have 2 GO's. Panomaticlunar Green dial and just picked up a SeaQ 39.5 Blue dial. I love both. My issues with the Lange 1 is the lug are just too long for my small wrist. 47mm for the GO vs 50mm for the Lange 1 lug to lug. I also prefer the date wheel on the GO. It took me a while to get the SeaQ because of the price but finally pulled the trigger a couple weeks ago and so glad I did. The size is perfect and the on the fly glide lock bracelet is amazing. Oh and you can get a discount of GO's

Ah Datejust... ❤️ After several years of watch geekery, owning an 1861 Speedy, then an Aqua Terra 2003 black dial, Hamilton etc, and obsessing over the Sub and Explorer, I've made up my mind .. after several AD visits, I've realised how amazing the DateJust 36mm is.... I'm on the list for silver dial, fluted on jubilee... it changes colour in different light, it's timeless, gorgeous and so comfy... I'm so glad I didn't go with the hype and those impossible to find sports models.... the DJ really can be the one watch for life, and if it helps me get something else some day, like that Explorer, then why not..I do feel that building some kind of relationship with the AD is worth it... Edit - forgot to mention my watches while I wait for the call - F91W casio golden accents and the square 5600e G shock... God Tier !

My first Rolex was a Yacht-Master Rhodium. Preferred the case and dimensions, and I was never keen on a GMT function I don’t need, or a Chrono I would rarely use. My AD said I could get a sub if I wanted but I went with the new mint green DateJust. I chose the smooth bezel and jubilee bracelet so I could wear it all the time. Also I wanted the jubilee bracelet but with the fluted bezel it looks too busy. I don’t think I’d want any bezel on any watch fluted. I prefer the DJ to all the sports watches including my own Yacht Master. For me, I have no interest in the sub, gmt or Daytona and I barely wear the Yacht Master these days. Always want to put the DateJust on. Funny thing is I was originally going to get an ALS Saxonia. But I knew I wouldn’t wear a leather strap watch much and a steel bracelet would be more versatile. I’m so glad I got the DateJust instead because it’s half the price and it’s exactly the watch that suited my tastes/needs. One of the best all round watches. A lot of these other sports watches are overrated imo.

They're named after a location and called original because they were the original! Thats the point. All the clocks in the airport lounges in Frankfurt are Glaushutte Original. 99% of the world won't know the difference between GO and Lange, probably easier to service the GO as well. I have no German watches and I'm a fan of both brands. I do agree a lot of the GO pieces are overpriced relative to other brands, I would not pay $22 or $20K for that diver in a million years, I'd go with something vintage or Tudor or whatever, that is just too expensive for what it is.

Glashutte and that valley was in Cccp hands until like the fall of the Berlin wall. Nomos was started i. 1992 I believe although that valley was making watches since the beginning. I didn't realise this until recently, but the screw crown down on a Rolex isn't used for waterproofing. It's just to guard against the user accidentally popping the crown out and damaging it. The seals provide the water proofing, the threads used on all Rolex crowns don't offer any waterproofing properties at all

Not correct. Screwing the crown down compresses the seals in place as part of the triplock waterproofing system. “As part of his Oyster Case Design, Hans Wilsdorf also patented the screw-in crown. The advantage of the screw in crown is the ability for it to seal against a rubber gasket. Although some crowns already possessed some type of rubber seal, the combination of a threaded stem compressing against a rubber o-ring made the seal much more water tight. Rolex utilizes the closing of a submarine hatch as a metaphor for describing how the threaded crown works.”

A crown's compression has the potential to be under or over tightened by the user. Hot take: I far prefer the Panomatic Lunar's dial to the Lange 1's dial. Something about the way the small seconds subdial on the Lange is tangent to the main dial bothers me. The Panomatic's subdial placement seems just more visually satisfying. GO's problem is that it is essentially the surviving company of the old GUB state-owned watch factory.

In some ways the GO is better executed than the Lange 1. For example, just look at the date wheels on both. The ALS date wheels are on different planes where the GO is on the same and looks a lot cleaner. PS, I love ALS.

It’s hard to explain the brand story because Glashutte Original was the same company as A Lange Shone. All watchmakers in Glasuhutte were nationalized into one company. An example of Eastern Germany’s communist past. So it’s an interesting story but told terribly. So GO is not a copy of ALS.
