as soon as you get comfortable with the fact that you can parry EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. out of their attacks without the red mark and find a good balance on defense and offense and defense is often the best offence i've found out, the game will turn from incredibly frustrating to somewhat challenging. i used to play this like other souls genre games wasting my time on dodging normal attacks.

main thing is to not even engage to enemies that you can avoid.. only fight those who drop something useful, and others you really can just skip them - just run through them and after some time they will forget about you the indicator will turn yellow

Dont listen to people telling you that "YoUrE PlAyInG ThE GaMe wRoNG" there is no wrong way to play this or any other game, play it the way you want and just have fun with it. Also, you need to get the mortal blade in order to unlock Mortal strike which is the flashy red move and FYI although it consumes spirits you can continue to use it even if to reach 0 though be it for less damage but will still do more damage than your regular attack. If this is your first play through its going to seem daunting at first but youll soon find the "click" and everything will make sense, the game will get easier, and youll be having a lot more fun. Trust.
