The problem is that unlike in Australia, the Gambling Commission(GC) in the UK has zero interest in protecting the punters-they believe their job is to protect the bookmakers and the tax take.I have seen interviews with the head of the GC, where when the interviewer asked about punters being restricted he simply said anyone who was restricted should speak to the bookmaker.This showed his complete ignorance of the subject as anyone who has been restricted will testify that the Bookmaker never enters into any correspondence about the decision.The stupidity of the BHB is that they have failed to realise that the 100's of thousands of punters who have been restricted over the last few years usually give up betting all together so that the BHB loses 100's of 1000's of income streams every year for ever.The only other potential saviour for the restricted punters is the Racing Post who have spent around 70% of their editorial content for the last year or two attacking affordability checks whilst completely failing to mention that Bookmakers have been aggressively enforcing their own reverse affordability checks on every single punter(most of whom buy their expensive products) who indicates they have even the slightest chance of winning in the short to medium term.

If I managed to win big, which ever the bookie, I wouldn't consider the winnings mine until I saw the funds in my bank. The worst part: All the regulatory bodies seem to do nothing about these seemingly dubious activities. This is supposed to be a leisure activity, like a round of golf. It seems to me there's literally NO POINT in signing with any bookmaker. You lose, you can play all day. You win, they immediately block you. Effectively you have NO CHANCE of winning via bookies over the long term, or even short term but for decent winnings. Betting exchanges only or call it a day.

Same in my case. All my betting is now done on the exchanges, I can ask for the price I want. Only pay a small commission on winnings and most of the time lay off my bet for either a cash out or a free bet. Bookies in 10 years will be dead, they will have no customers left and the very little they give back to horse racing will kill the sport too

There are a lot of things they do now to stop people in shops, I was restricted in shops as long ago as the 1990s and Laddies did it to me in 2006. They put photos of people behind the counter and word soon spreads. Even using the terminals, once you're known then they simply turn the machines off. William Hill machines are being updated and the machine takes a photo of the person when they are placing the bet. Also in shops they will phone bets up quite often as low as a £25 or £50 win bet.

This is a bit off topic Caan - but wondered if you'd come across a problem I've encountered at several racecourses across the country now... They all seem to be going totally cashless. Ie. No cash accepted at the gate, no cash accepted at the bar or even on-course food stands. How on earth are on-course bookies going to exist within a cashless society. It simply wouldn't be logistically possible for your small, independent, on course bookie to take bets other than cash. Just seems such a strange move by race-courses. Also look at the figures for the crowds for the Festival this week. Tbf not surprised they had so many issues over Cheltenham as one of the very few places to offer lots of matched betting offers in a year when there was very little on offer elsewhere. I was already barred from them but was aware of many people running 10+ mgms last week... Cant imagine a relatively new site would have necessarily been ready for that sort of volume, even given the group they sit within. Would assume the shit odds are also linked to the offers, can't be best price when giving everyone 100% odds boosts every day. The simple answer is yes they can and have done for many years. I was restricted as far back as the 1990s in some betting shops. Once you're known some of the shops will turn the machines off if they don't want certain people to bet. As for using different shops, yes that was a tactic that could be used. I know from experience though the they will often alert other shops in the area if a punter that they don't want placing bets has placed a bet in their shop. It's happened to me as far back as 25 years ago. I placed a bet in one shop and then went to another to do the same bet and they told me I'd already done the bet in another shop. They will resort to any tactic they can to prevent people from winning if they can get away with it. Many people are now taking them to the small claims court (up to 10K) when they renege on paying out.

Vast majority of my bets is gambling in a betting shop, you have an opportunity on the fob machines to restrict your bets (comes upon the screen optional).. I was reading in the racing post online (people telling their stories on affordability checks they were speaking anonymously of course) one lady had been going into the same bookmakers for 20 years, suddenly a lady behind the counter asked her for her private details bank details etc , lady said why? shop worker said affordability checks... She said I'm not showing you my private details, OK that's fine but your bets will be restricted , lady never went into that bookmakers ever again her local bookmakers.... I've never had any problems gambling on the bet station self serve.. on average £100 on odds on shots primarily football.... I have put £500 a couple of times , and they put the money on the machine never had a problem... 1 Lad in the bookmakers lost 17,000 pounds he had a bequest... He lost 500 pounds per day excluding a Sunday... About 6 weeks later he was barred, for losing too much money.... That was 6 years ago he is still barred... Every last penny of that 17,000 pounds he lost on the roulette.... That's a true story because I know him....

Many are the same nowadays unfortunately although MGM seem to be pretty bad. They only want losers and the restrictions and skullduggery have been around a long time. I started getting restricted back in the 1990s although back then it was a lot easier to get friends and family to help with the bets. With the affordability checks though it is far harder than it was even 3 years ago.

You mentioned ‘bookmaking’- I agree. However when punters aren’t ‘punting’ then they are sometimes treated over zealously by dodgy firms and inexperienced staff. Guess I was lucky got ally £60 of free bets plus another £20 first day of Cheltenham, withdrew all my horse money then put 2 trebles on with fee £10 football bets. I say this if they take your money they should pay out, if they want to do checks do them before a bet is struck. More you hear about bookies the worse you feel, friend got an ante post treble up at Cheltenham and spent an hour and a half in the shop where they claimed the prices he wrote down were not available at that time, eventually paid out after head office got involved.

All those bookmakers and online casino's are full of crap. Don't even bother putting your hard earned money in their pockets. I never really played sports bets but was more of a slots player. When you just join an online casino they larder you with deposit bonusses and other perks but once you win too much all that stops. I have been named an advanced player at two big UK based online casino's when I won too many times and did beat their wagering requirements on their deposit bonusses. Like sure, I know the outcome of when a slot is going to pay. Utter rubbish and bullshit. Of course I had my favourite slots and played those a lot. Does that make you an advanced player? Great channel here, just discovered it. Also I was a player making mostly €1.00-€3.00 bets on any given slot. Look at some of the slot streamers playing on casino funds I suspect, buying bonusses for 10k or more. This being facilitated by social media platforms where they can post their rubbish making more people addicted to that crap. That should be banned as well, just like all those 500 betting ads every night on any given TV channel.
