Superhero romance! While there may be many iconic couples that spring to mind when one thinks of DC or Marvel there are some obscure couples out there, and even among the big two the date issue is a rarity. A compelling romantic issue can be difficult to accomplish, but not so in Astro City. The Samartian and Winged Victory go on a disastrous dinner date that somehow still leaves things open for them to become a couple. Find out all about it here on Casually Comics!

I honestly have never cared if the classic DC or Marvel characters ever aged but it's cool to see in a creator-owned series. Another appeal for me about AC (as well as POWERS, INVINCIBLE, IRREDEEMABLE and others) is a whole superhero universe (mostly0 contained in one book!

For the most part, I agree. But the moving in real-time does bother me sometimes. Particularly with the delays. I mean, Astra is now in her late 30s. Roscoe became Jack-in-the-box 27 years ago Sometimes it just feels tragic, to get attached to these characters and then only see them through small glimpses for the rest of their heroic careers

My favourite isn't really a date story, but it's Wally and Linda having lunch at the beginning of the Savitar arc in Flash. That was indeed fascinating. It spent a nice bit of time letting you try to understand things from the sort of blue/orange morality that would come with someone living this life. They have to make decisions no real person has to and that is going to shape them. And the idea that Winged Victory has sat down and CONSIDERED what her order of priorities are versus Samaritans more passive "kinda making it up as I go along" can reveal the issues in both. WV has definitely pondered the Trolley Problem, while Samaritan would be utterly confused by it.

Idk, I think Superman & Lois is a better example. That Clark is very humanized and he does get mad at points but never overly so and he, at heart, is a big softie who just wants the best for his kids. He has a grit to his superman that leads to him feeling real but also powerful and awe-inspiring. Plus bonus points for adapting the fleischer suit, atom man and Bizarro was a very good parallel to Clark.

Astro City is my favorite superhero comic, period. I stumbled on the "Child Astra strikes off on her own" issue at a friend's house and have been loving it ever since. This one in particular is a great one as it really is a deep dive into the "high powered superhero" personality and relationship. They both learn a lot about both themselves and each other. Another wonderful little detail about them eating in the fast food place - people kept bumping into WV like she wasn't there, kind of stressing the "insignificantness" of her normal identity, and/or highlighting that women are overlooked much more than men -- no one bumped into Samaritan, after all. It ramped up her tension, made her lashing out more believable, and highlighted her point.

I'm impressed at how much Sasha can get out of reading a comic. 👍 I think that most comics that are rated"A" for "Adult" should actually be rated as "A" for "Adolescent". It is refreshing to see a grown up story, rather than one that just leans in edginess, sex and violence.

I was coming to the comments to say something similar! "Grown up" is _exactly_ the right term, since "adult" is so often misused. (As is "mature".) I really appreciate how Winged Victory is written in this story. I mean “feminist superhero that prioritizes saving women over men” sounds like a caricature a male conservative writer would write to make fun of feminists but WV is actually very thoughtfully written, you can disagree with her methods but still deeply understand where she’s coming from and why she thinks that way, and she never comes off as a cruel or callous person. Just someone good with some deeply held beliefs.
@ProjektTaku
@ProjektTaku Жыл бұрын
It is a fairly interesting idea to ponder. Not some psycho villain masquerading as a hero, she's simply a hero with biases she can't help and it causes you ponder whether or not she is actually correct, instead of the story deciding it for you. She says she consciously decides to save women first, but also states that its only if everything else is equal. Is she right since she could probably save both? Or not so since she is actively prioritizing someone more personal to her, a woman (in a sense its the question of "would superman save lois lane before he saved some random window wiper?"), over someone she seemingly has less of a personal relation to, a man, and potentially, intentionally letting someone die over personal beliefs? Does that even matter since if she rescues the man first the woman dies and if she rescues the woman first the man dies, and then it becomes about the message each rescue and death represent. Or is that even right since she's choosing lives over what message they could send?

The new series follows up on that, and it's pretty good on that; I don't know if Busiek was aware of trans-exclusive radical feminists at the time, but my god, her group gave such strong vibes. Not to go into detail but I like the resolution of the story, felt like finally letting go of the unhealthy ideas of the 90s and Second Wave feminism (according to WV patrons a female hero having being in relationship was bad, apparently)

@@ProjektTaku Defiantly makes you ponder. Really this makes me think that there are times where the message does need to take a backseat. If everything is about sending a message you don't always see situations for what they are. In beginner first aid your taught in triage to save those who you can save as safely as possible. I would choose the woman but that's because I know I can swim, I was taught how to get someone out of water and know CPR. I can at least try to fix drowning. I can't fix a guy mid fall. The desire to send a message can also backfire. Messages only work if people get the one your trying to send. deliberate saving a women when it may have been more convenient to rescue a man, and chauvinists will cry out sexism and use it as a example of straw man feminists being real. Your not getting sexists to change their minds by doing that at best, actively hurting the feminist cause at worse. Maybe you help a woman you save realise she isn't invisible anymore after rescuing from drowning. People aren't going to suddenly feel empowered by a conscious choice to choose a minority in a weird situation. I sent this to a friend. As she points out the issue isn't with the answer. It's with the question itself. Its a the trolly problem. Everyone is talking about witch track instead of the true hero answer: You throw the switch as it goes over the split to derail the train and possibly save everyone.

I am really enjoying your videos. I bought the Tom Strong Compendium because of your video. I'd love more Astro City. I found Astro City #52, "The Nearness of You", to be the story I remember the most. For me, that story along with Samaritan's backstory, did not just affect the reading of Astro City but affected how I view all of the "crisis" events. The uncountable lives that are changed or erased are mostly (or completely) ignored. In a way, Astro City made it impossible for me to take interest in those events (along with their frequency).

I have a few issues but not enough. This is a great way to look at superheroes different, a deconstruction of a superhero world that isn't a condemnation of superheroes or making them look bad. I've been wanting to pick it up since I first heard about it on your channel years ago but with it being kind of an anthology series, I wasn't sure where to start but now I do!

You got me hooked on Astro City. Who thought 90's comics could be good.

Astro City has the feel that Busiek wrote it to make the point that telling superhero stories for adults is not about cursing, sex and ultra violence. That you can have emotinal depth in the stories while being surrounded by bright colours and the absurd hijinks of silver age stories he grew up with.

I collected a ton of comics throughout the 90s I don't think I bothered with Astro City... I think I had too many super heroes at the time

Winged Victory reminds me of what She-Hulk has in her character... the choice she makes to always be big and green and those story arcs where she realizes being just Jen and being her more un-Hulk self doesn't make her weak, just bring a different side to her. It's how her father is uncomfortable with her as She-Hulk and John Jamison sorta forced his preference onto her and she goes back and forth at times not knowing if she is using one version to hide from the other.

One of the things that stuck with me is how Winged Victory did specify if all other thing are equal she would save the women.

I think this was a great conversation between two individuals with different perspectives on certain situations. Best thing is that it ended both peaceful with two understanding and respect where their arguments come from. Something I wish most people in real life and social media (X) would do more often.

A new collection is coming out soon. I love the complexity of Astro City, and the fact the heroes aren't perfect they have complex lives and sometimes aren't able to make the best choices or ideal choices. I'm a huge Busiek fan (and Astro City.) I'd love more Astro City content on your channel! As to the date, yeah it was a complex date--not bad per se, just not going as planned. But getting to know the other person is the goal isn't it on a date? Which I feel they did that well.

Did anyone else feel like this was the, "Meegan, come back!" sketch from Key & Peele? WV's insecurities set her apart as more than a Wonder Woman pastiche.

If you want to make a video on a burger-obsessed hero, can I suggest Sharon Carter? There’s been a long-running gag for decades about her hunt for the world’s best cheeseburger.

Kurt Busiek is one of my favorite writers in any medium. A master of the human element of the superhero genre. Easy to get immersed in the stories. Often his style feels like someone recounting a story, making it easy to connect with and feel more organic.

I'm all for more talk on Astro City, great series and I have recommended it as a great way to like superhero comics, including Invincible. I like the onshot appeal of the series that also approaches the whole as an anthology of a connected world. On the collected front though, great that we are getting things reprinted but I wish Busiek could also provide the more sensible option of a normal OHC. Whatever happened to those, either I have to get a chunky compendium that is not much suited for a quick read and flimsy in desing to a large massive tome that is even harder to go about with, like a chore. A nonsense problem but it is impractical to not have moe OHCs that's why I recommend Invincible first depending if people prefer a good and afforable physical copy.

I was lucky enough to be in on Astro City from the beginning (I'm old), and Sasha you nailed this analysis on all levels, including its reflection of values of the time. Its one of the comics I show people when demonstrating comics can illuminate the human condition. Well done. I also don't have a full run, so I will be investigating your affiliate links. Thank you.

On a Tom Strong video, I asked for more of that content, and would echo the same sentiment regarding Astro City. Both are excellent. I'd also like to add Atomic Robo to the list of titles to consider focusing on.

Would be really awesome if you made more videos covering Winged Victory's stories. Not only is she an interesting take on a feminist hero, but the character development and challenges she ends up going through (particularly around issue 7-10 in the 2013 run of Astro City) are pretty thought provoking.
