That Rams defense was insanely good. They held the Seahawks to -23 yards passing in a shutout. The Rams were 9-7 in 1979 only because of injuries. The mid to late 70s Rams were absolutely stacked with talent but were woeful underachievers in the playoffs losing in 1974,76, and 77 to Minnesota in games they should’ve won; also losing at home in shocking blowout fashion in 1975 and 78. They were one quarterback away from a dynasty in my opinion. Had the Rams drafted Bradshaw instead of the Steelers, the Rams would’ve won 4 SBs and no one would’ve ever heard of the Steel Curtain. The Rams won regular season games vs Pittsburgh both in 1975 and 1978

I flew home from the Air Force to watch the Rams in this SB. It was a very exciting game. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Rams were on defense and RAN to the opposite end of the field as a way of telling the Steelers, "We are coming after you." Sports Illustrated next cover said, "This one was SUPER." It was disappointing to see them lose, but even more disappointing when they left L.A. for Anaheim and then St.Louis. Carroll Rosenbloom, who owned the Rams was serious about winning. When he died and left the team to his wife Georgia, she didn't care about winning. After the Rams moved to St. Louis and suddenly became the greatest show on earth, Jim Nantz interviewed her after the Rams won the NFC Championship and were heading to the Super Bowl. He said,, "Isn't it great that the Super Bowl will be played in the GEORGIA dome?" She looked at him with a such a perplexed look I couldn't help but laugh. Clueless!

The story behind the Rams being so competitive in SB XIV against the Steelers. The Rams won their division 6 times and were a very good team from 1973-1978. The Rams team that faced the Steelers in the Super Bowl had Bud Carson, Pittsburgh’s former defensive coordinator from 1972-1977, as well as several other former Pittsburgh coaches. The Rams staff knew the Steelers’ players well and had some insight in their tendencies, which is what Terry Bradshaw alluded to when he said the Rams were the toughest Super Bowl opponent they faced.

From 1970 to 1982 Dallas made it to the NFC Championship game ten times. The other three years: one year they missed the playoffs and the other two seasons ended in losses to the Rams at home in the divisional round by a total of four points. The second loss was Roger Staubach's last game. His last pass was a "completion" to one of his linemen. The Rams' losses to the Cowboys were in NFC Championship games both blowouts.

The 2011 NY Giants were 7-7 with two games left in the regular season, which they had to win to make it into the playoffs, which they did, defeating the Jets and the Cowboys. This earned them the division title but with a 9-7 record it was not good enough for a bye. So they then had to win 2 of their 3 playoff games on the road, including the NFC championship against San Francisco, and then they beat New England in the Super Bowl for the second time. THIS is the most memorable playoff run by a borderline team in NFL history, bar none. After starting 7-7 they got hot at the right time and rattled off 6 wins in a row, and took home the crown.

'79 Rams...they wouldn't be anywhere near my top choice. They had a lot of studs throughout their roster and had numerous injuries that hampered them. Cody Jones, Ron Jessie and Pat Haden were all significant losses to IR. Even then, they still had some monsters. Nolan Cromwell was a beast, both Youngblood brothers, Wendell Tyler, Kent Hill, Jackie Slater, etc. If one goes by DVOA for worst ever, the award would go to the 2008 Cardinals, who have the theoretical worst DVOA of any Super Bowl team. Interestingly, I'm not seeing them as a common consideration. Along those lines, I see commentary about the '85 Patriots. Bah. While they got lucky as hell against the Dolphins in the '85 AFCC game, they aren't even in the top 10 for crappiest DVOA. They wouldn't even come CLOSE to my top 3 worst teams.... But DVOA isn't everything. I would submit that the top contenders are, quite easily: 2001 Patriots 1994 Chargers 1980 Raiders Ranging from near talentless to lucky, none of these teams had any business even sniffing the playoffs, to say nothing about the Super Bowl. Further, some teams just get hot at the right time. Take the aforementioned '08 Cardinals, the '79 Rams, hell, even the '05 Steelers got hot at the right time (as the Colts were likely the best team overall in '05). When you get hot, you can do some damage in the playoffs without letting your head hang. But those 3 teams above, they were just pathetically lucky. I can recite numerous nonsense for all of them '80 Raiders: Raymond Chester and his completely dumba$$, lucky bounce-off-Kenny-King-pass-right-into-his-arms garbage, JJ dropping a few passes through no contribution of the Raiders, etc. '94 Chargers: Two idiot bombs, especially the Alfred Pupunu bomb where no Steelers covers him and it wasn't a trick play. Like what the actual fu*k? This game is UNDERAPPRECIATED by fans, as they don't really know just how f-ing INSANE this game was. I cannot find a single game where the LOSING team puts up ~2x the (1) Total Plays, (2) Total Yards, (3) Total TOP and, here's the kicker, (4) EVEN in turnovers and somehow LOSES the game. It's UNHEARD OF. '01 Patriots: Perhaps the single most talentless team of all time to qualify, to say nothing about win, a Super Bowl. Do I even need to go into detail with this $hitty team? My God. The single worst referee call of all time with the Tuck Rule, bumbling their way through the AFCC game with bad ref calls (that even the league admits), multiple special teams TDs, etc. And let's not forget, THEY F-ING CHEATED! '79 Rams compared to those 3 turds? No way. I'll take the Rams over any of those dogs every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Even with injuries, they still had some monsters and got hot at the right time. It's hard to bomb a team that gets hot and just smokes the competition, even if they are truly a worse team. But those 3 turds above? Not only did they suck, but they also got lucky at levels that are just...mouth opening...

When the 2008 Cardinals lost games they lost them by average of like 20+ points per game. The 2008 Cardinals were 28th in scoring defense and 19th in total defense and the were 22nd in rushing offense. Defensively the 2008 Cardinals only had 31 sacks and only 13 int on defense. I think you can make the case for the Cardinals. They had the worst DVOA of any Super Bowl team. BUT...I find it hard to bomb teams like this when they just beat teams outright in the playoffs. Getting hot at the right time is damn-near everything and they did. Hard to fault them for that. But the '01 Patriots, or '94 Chargers or '80 Raiders...THOSE teams were just STUPID lucky
@pp3k3jamailАй бұрын
@@lunaticfringe896 you got to have some luck involved like the 08 Cardinals got lucky in the NFC championship Game. The referees didn't call pass interference on the last play when Kevin Curtis was interfered with.

Some of the Vikings teams of the 70's were not nearly as good as their record indicated. They played in a very weak division and a weak NFC. It's why they always lost in the Super Bowl. One of the first games I remember watching as a youngster was in 1973 when the Vikings went to the SB. Towards the end of the season they played Cincinnati, who were probably the third or fourth best team in the AFC that season, and got trounced by the Bengals.
