You missed the banter afterwards with the press. Many reporters knew, having seen him out on the town that evening, or were in the hotel lobby when he returned in the morning. Well impressed at the post game presser, they asked how he managed it. Max replied that he ran his route, looked up and saw double vision, two balls coming through the air towards him, but when he held up his hands, he noticed that he had 4 arms, and it wasn't a problem.

Max was the color commentator on the Packer's Radio Network for years. Best moment (to me) was 1995 or '96. Max, deadpan: "Good thing it wasn't a groin injury." A few seconds of silence was broken by Erwin finally failing to stifle his laughter.

As one of three grandchildren of McGee, I get a kick out of hearing other people surmise what he was like and how he must have felt. I can tell you, echoing Jerry Kramer, that he was a natural at everything he did. Though he had a "carefree" attitude, he never took anything for granted and helped out as many of his friends as he could (aka he used his popularity and sway to help Fuzzy Thurston keep his bar up and running for a long time). He did the crossword puzzle every single morning, made the best ribs I've ever had, and I miss him everyday. The catch is an example of his greatness, but it extends far beyond the game.

True story. I knew Max McGee. When I asked him about this story, he said everything these folks described. I'll add one thing: He was sitting next to Paul Hornung on the bench; they were making plans for Hornung's upcoming wedding in Beverly Hills. And that's when Lombardi yelled for him to get ready to go into the game. By the way, how many players on the KC Chiefs defense became all-pros or Hall of Famers? (Buch Buchanan, Bobby Bell, Fred Williamson had great careers; their CBs had 10 INTs each that year in the pass-crazy AFL.) Great story, for sure.

Known as "elderly Max" and a real partier, he was still very agile and looked like he caught those passes (one with one hand) with ease.

Boyd Dowler had like one of the best names in sports! He was a 6'5" wide receiver who played 12 seasons from 1959 to 1971, 11 with the Green Bay Packers. Born: 1937 (age 87) Max McGee died in 2007. He played high school football in Texas and was the very first player in American high school football history ever to rush for over *3,000 yards* in a single season! (3,048 his senior year). He played college football at Tulane.

My grandfather was around the same age during the late 60s. He looked a lot like Max McGee with that hairline.

You have to understand that the standard haircut was the buzz cut. It made the receding hairline stand out. Trust me, as a child back then, I got plenty of these haircuts.

reminded of one of the great moments in Buffalo Bills history - in the 1992-1993 playoffs, Jim Kelly's backup leads a 32 point comeback against the Oilers. Kelly had gotten injured the last game of the regular season. Frank Reich (now Colts HC) was sober as far as we know. Dock Ellis was not. He pitched a no hitter for the Pirates while he was on LSD (by his story, he got high thinking it was the day before gameday)

Max McGee was the party partner of Paul Horning, the famous Heisman Trophy-winning QB and Packer running back. They were notorious for sneaking out of training camp and tying one on. Packer Guard Jerry Kramer wrote about their exploits in his book Instant Replay. I remember watching the game with my father. We had no idea about Max McGee's condition at the time.

Even though he had one of the greatest QBs ever (Bart Starr, 5 Championships in 7 years) throwing to him, I believe one of the TD passes was thrown behind him, and he reached back and corralled it in one-handed.

A similar story: Ralph Houk told Mickey Mantle that he would have the day off, so the Mick tied one on the night before. He overslept and made it to the park in the eighth inning, massively hungover, nauseated, head throbbing. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, Houk sent Mantle up to pinch hit, and he promptly hit a walkoff home run. The crowd went bat guano, and as he crossed the plate, he said to Roger Maris, who was on base ahead of him, "Those people have no idea how much I deserve that applause."

i remember watching this game in 1967. funny thing was everyone was worried that Paul Hornug was going to be out of it. he was a bigger party animal than Max Magee. Hornug is the guy in the background of the photo of Magee.

Dating myself, I saw the game on the tube. Yeah Max was good. KC defensive backs were weak. Fred "the hammer" Williamson was burned several Times. "The hammer" went on to have a minor film career.

Plus, the catches were great catches, particularly the one where pass was behind him. Lombardi was a great coach because he knew how to handle “party” players such as McGee and Hornung. He did NOT treat everyone the same, he knew how to get the most out of each player.

My friend went on a week long bender before his SATs, went in with a massive hangover and managed to score 1350/1600.

I was at the game, and what isn't mentioned is that McGee was in a cross-over pattern about twenty yards out. He wasn't the primary receiver in the play; he was just going through the motions of his route. When he finally turned his head toward the quarterback, the ball was there; he caught it between his left elbow and his left hip. It is a miracle how he managed to hold on to it as he raced to the goal.

I played Semi Pro Football (should be called Extended Amateur League Football) until I was 62 years old. I had a 24 yard Kickoff return in that game. Loved it and if given the chance would play again at 70-71 years old. Turn 71 in July this year.

I played college volleyball at penn state. We had a match once on Sunday in the spring vs Ohio state. That Saturday just so happen to be the first real day of spring and both teams had no matches.... the entire town was throwing down, funnest day I’ve had out there. Both teams were partying. The match the next Sunday afternoon was the worst volleyball I’d seen at that level. Guys we’re throwing up in match and you could visibly see guys with the shakes. Now you don’t see Sunday games in ncaa volleyball all thanks to the 2014 penn state and Ohio state men’s volleyball programs. 😁some people can play well hung over others don’t Hahahaha this dudes a legend.

I was 10 years old in '67 and a huge packer's fan so remember the game well, but regarding playing well after a night of partying, I read a story years ago where a sports writer was up early one game day morning and happened to see Joe Namath walk into the team hotel at dawn with two girls and the writer thought wow, no way the Jets win today's game so made a sizeable bet...and Joe had one of his best games all season and the Jets won and cost the sports writer a nice chunk of change.
