For the "Ron goes too far" part I'd honestly extend that criticism to the whole scene, or even the whole storytelling around that crucial moment. In the books, the argument happens because Ron is freaked about Ginny whereas Harry and Hermione stop being worried when they just hear that they had to go work in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid. It's a case of Ron being unreasonable, but you can understand the reasoning. Also, writer Steve Kloves was clearly a Harry-Hermione shipper and so he deliberately made Ron out to be the sole "bad guy" and Harry and Hermione to look like the perfect couple. In the book, Harry is the one who feels most isolated, and Ron and Hermione are having conversations about him. Sure, the conversations aren't anything malicious, but it shows that those two are talking the most. Now, the argument is based on this whole "I saw you two the other night" thing instead of just a completely unconscious fear. Finally, Ron leaving doesn't feel like it has much weight. In the books, it's kind of earth shattering and Hermione is barely talking and Harry is looking at Ginny on the map. In the movie though, we had to have some weird dance scene where they are getting on just fine without Ron. It just doesn't have the same weight
@grahamdamberger71306 ай бұрын
Ron flipping the script and saying Harry's parents are dead instead of Harry saying that about his own parents and Ron worrying about his meeting a similar fate as Harry's was completely wrong. But this is what happens when you hire a writer who has a complete bias towards a character and wants that character to shine over even the character whose name is in the title. Kloves should have made his own fanfic where Hermione was the protagonist and got to shine if he wanted instead of forcing her stardom into a series of film adaptations based on a novel series titled Harry Potter.

ALSO- that Polyjuice potion is supposed to change your voice as well to the one you’re changing into, but in Chamber of Secrets (when Ron & Harry turn into Crabbe & Goyle) & in Deathly Hallows part 1 (when Hermione turn into Bellatrix). I know it was prob to avoid confusing the watcher but we would have understood anyway!

When I first watched it, I assumed that it was a change of perspective. An actual example of this is in Soul, when the main characters switch bodies, and we hear the opposite voices. But whenever it switches to someone else's perspective, the movie clarifies that it is the character's correct voice. However, it seems that it is an ACTUAL plot point in the movies that the voices don't change. It makes 0 sense, but it is still a plot point

The first movie does't give away the villain's reveal. I saw it first back in 2001 and the surprise was huge. The mystery was strong and Snape works very well as a red herring. The subtle background clues you mentionned are hints you notice when you rewatch the movie ans therefore already know that Quirell is the villain. Because now, you pay more attention to him and catch the clues. All good mystery stories have clues and hints that become relevant during rewatches. That's very différent than giving away. In a first watch, I can tell the surprise was huge back in the days.

1:56 I think that change was added because in the book it doesn't say whether or not he has his turban on and it can get away with doing it because it doesn't have to say whether or not he had his turban and it's possible to not realize and remember that his turban was only mentioned until after he first met Harry, meanwhile in the film it has to show either he does or doesn't have it because it's a visual media and him not having a turban and then having one might have been more suspicious than him refusing to shake Harry's hand at the leaky cauldron. 4:50 I know the director of this film (Alfonso Cuarón), didn't read the books and based the directing of the actors on essays they did about their character (which Rupert Grint the actor who plays Ron didn't do), but that doesn't change the fact that this is really head-scratching when a major plot point in this film is the fact that underage wizards can't do magic, since it's the reason why he leaves 4 Privet Drive in this film. 6:11 And they also reveal that Barty Crouch Jr. was alive in the opening scene. 6:48 I think the fact that Dumbledore is always yelling in this film makes it less shocking when he actually is mad when he runs in to save Harry from Barty Crouch Jr. because it's supposed to be this big moment where Harry can't believe Dumbledore's this mad but it doesn't work since Dumbledore's always been mad throughout this film, and if I only saw this film and didn't read any of the books I would honestly assume the point of Dumbledore was for the students to be afraid of him. I do want to bring up that Dumbledore is a very hard role to play and cast because while Richard Harris did a perfect job at capturing the kind mentor figure aspect of the character he didn't do a very good job at the more energetic parts of the character (partly because he was dying of Hodgkin lymphoma while filming both films), which Michael Gambon did a great job capturing and if Harris continued to play the character I honestly can't seem him capturing the warrior aspect of Dumbledore in later installments that showed why he was the only wizard Voldemort ever feared which Michael Gambon did a great job of capturing in moments like his fight with Voldemort. I do think that if Ian McKellan hadn't turned down the role he could have perfectly captured both the mind mentor figure and the energetic formidable foe aspects of the character but I do think McKellan did have a good reason to turn down the role that being he has stated that he couldn't accept a role of an actor when both of them hated each other.

For me: 1. Ron panicking during the Devil's Snare scene. Also the cgi when Neville's broom goes flying and in some of the Quidditch match moments isn't great. 2. Either Ginny and Colin Creevey don't get as much character exploration as in the book or the movie's events not feeling as exciting or big as some of the other movies' events (this is both a book and movie issue for me). 3. Giving Harry's "I trusted you!" line that he says to Lupin in the book to Hermione in the movie. Hermione and Lupin barely talked with each other in the movie while Harry and Lupin had multiple bonding moments with each other. Also there should have been more explanation in the Shrieking Shack scene such the who the Marauders were, how Sirius escaped Azkaban, and definitely that Harry's dad's patronus was a stag which is why Harry believes he saw his dad later on. 4. Removing the obstacles in the maze. Also no Quidditch World Cup match, no explanation of what Igor Karkaroff was doing during the movie, and Dumbledore's character along with the Barty Crouch Junior storyline were both poorly adapted in the movie. 5. Not mentioning Neville's involvement in the Prophecy. Also Sirius's mirror should have been in the movie and I didn't like how Harry dismissed Cho despite her being on Veritaserum. 6. Harry and Ginny's relationship, specifically the Slug Club dinner scene and the "Open Up You!" scene plus adding the cafe scene of Harry flirting with the waitress made it harder to take Harry's feelings toward Ginny seriously. Personally, I'm more upset about Ginny's character being butchered. And the brown and dark filter is distracting. 7. Either inconsistent moments (ex. Bill's sudden scars, Dobby telling Ron it's good to see him again, the mirror shard, Lupin asking Harry about the grindylow in his office, etc.) or the shaky cam with the chase scene. Also, like the Chamber of Secrets, this movie can feel like less is going on compared to the other films. 8. Harry and Voldemort's final duel not being in front of others and the aftermath of it feels so quiet. Plus Voldemort slapping and kicking Harry when he has a wand and has been trying to kill Harry for the whole fight was out of place.

For Half-Blood Prince, I've seen people pick the Burrow scene during Christmas holidays as the film's worst moment. It added nothing to the story other than Bellatrix gloating about killing Sirius and taunting Harry. Compare that to the Astronomy Tower scene towards the end of the film, where the only changes made were the inclusion of Bellatrix and the Dark Mark being shot for Dumbledore's death rather than as a means to make him think they killed another student or teacher.

Very well speak. Tbh after the first two movies, I reluctantly rewatch other movies because I feel like they fail to capture the essence of Harry Potter world lore and characters' relationship. If they spend 5 minutes to explain expect patronus and the shape of each patronus depend on the owner love,etc, we won't need to explain for the new comer why Harry saw that patronus stag and thought he saw his dad, Dumbledore's reaction of Snape's patronus, etc. They cut Voldy's background so we do not have a grasp of who he truly are. Cut a lot of James scene and make him less important in Harry life when compared to Lily

I feel so gaslighted when people say the third or fifth movies are the best. The first two movies are the only ones that capture the tone and magic of the books, and they barely stray from the source material. The other directors had too big of egos and had to change things to add their unique "stamp" to the movies. They cut so much out, and the character interactions are so weird and unnatural. The third one in particular felt and looked like a Tim Burton movie. Moreover, idk why movies 3-8 all had to be different shades of brown, grey, green, blue, and black. They are so ugly.

12:01 It is by no means a small difference. In the books, the Weazleys treat Harry as their own son. Despite being hand to mouth they invite Harry to the Borrows, Mrs Weazley sends Harry christmas presents and Ron sends Harry birthday presents. Ron saying that Harry has no family negates everything that happened until then. Harry is always at home when he is at the Burrows. And even under an imperius curse Ronal Weazley will never utter those words. The only change I will make is to have a two parter for Half Blood Prince as well. First of all, it is strange that the longest book had one of the shortest movies. And they removed so many memory scenes with Dumbledore to show us death eaters trying to enter the castle. Why? The movie script writers didn't get the idea behind the book. Draco mended the vanishing cabinet just because it wasn't possible for death eaters to enter Hogwarts from the front door. Also, there was a small redemption moment for Professor Trelawney when she says that her cards showed her the lightning struck tower, foreshadowing Dumbledore's death at the Astronomy tower. Furthermore, there is no set up for the horcrux hunt apart from Regulus's wrong locket. In the books, Harry saw young Tom Riggle Hocey's memory (hepzibah smith's elf) where we see young Tom Riddle eyeing on the objects which he will later make his horcruxes. All those memories added life to the aimless horcux hunt that we saw in the movies. Fingers crossed the new HBO MAX series stays true to the books.

As far as Harry using magic in PoA, I always thought it was simply because he was doing homework (idk if Hogwarts assigns summer homework cuz who does that?) and how Fudge forgave Harry for accidentally blowing up Marge. In OoP, he was trying to do everything to get Harry out of the picture to sweep under the rug that Voldemort had fully returned. Fudge was afraid of losing his position of power, so denying Voldemort's return and calling Harry crazy would fix his problems in his eyes.

The only way I have been able to justify some of the differences that all of us as fans just can't stand is that the books had not been written yet as the films were made. The writers didn't know yet that some of the parts that didn't seem important at that moment in time were HUGELY important as all is revealed. Snape was the only exception in that JKR told him that he stayed in love with Lily until the bitter end. I guess that the only solution would have been following the books verbatim. No complaints from me at sitting through a six hour film. I too would rather have seen Voldy's lifeless corpse fall to the ground as an ordinary mortal man. "Shoelaces" was the most ridiculous scene of the entire series. Ok, I'll stop my complaints now. Thank you for letting me vent. Maybe the new HBO series will have learned from past mistakes. Now we know where more emphasis should a been placed and it won't happen again. If I, or any other super fanatics, am asked for my input in the new production, I will be sure to let you know. I won't allow any 'calmly' to happen again and there won't be any young women bending down to tie a man's shoe.

Here are my cringiest/least favourite moments/aspects about the movies: * Everyone cheering and clapping for Hagrid. (Chamber of Secrets) - Incredibly cheesy, way too overly sentimental and drawn out than the scene needed to be. Like, sure, have the trio be happy and relieved that Hagrid is out of Azkaban, but did we really need a standing ovation? * The introduction of Beaxbaton and Durmstrang. (Goblet of Fire) - Unnecessarily over produced and over performed. Wasn’t the big ship emerging out of the black lake and exuberant flying carriage being pulled by giant horses not enough visual eye candy? Also, isn’t the fact that all of Durmstrang are boys and Beaxbaton are girls kinda sexist? * Shrunken Heads (Prisoner of Azkaban) - They’re very racist, annoying and unnecessary. In an already whimsical world, for some reason Alfonso Cuaron thought it needed more whimsy? * Emma Watson’s overacting. (Goblet of Fire) - Just a combination of bad acting and poor direction. * The attack on the Burrow (Half-Blood Prince) - Not only wasn’t it in the book, but it tries to compensate for the lack of battle in the final act... and completely fails. It doesn’t really make sense narrative-wise and it doesn’t add anything to the overarching story. * Any scene with Bonnie Wright (HBP & DH) - Just very bad acting. Also not helped by David Yates bland direction and Steve Kloves not giving her a more substantial role in the series. * Daniel Radcliffe’s entire performance. (Half-Blood Prince) - Even Radcliffe himself admits it. Extremely wooden and stilted performance. Barely any emotion registered, has the same bored facial expression for almost every scene. Again, David Yates’ direction probably doesn’t help. * Entire sequence at Malfoy Manor (Deathly Hallows 1) - I hate everything about it. In the book, it’s a scene of desperation and struggle. Hermione is being tortured. Ron is screaming her name in anguish and in a way trying to comfort her in letting her hear his voice. Harry is pounding the walls and irrationally pulls random objects out of his pouch. In the film, almost the entire scene is played for laughs. Wormtail is treated as a joke and gets the most anticlimactic end to his character (especially when compared to the book). Dobby, rather than being fearful, is telling jokes. Why is Bellatrix torturing Hermione with a knife instead of the Cruciatus Curse? The entire scene is also directed in a really boring and stale way. There’s a very awkward cut of Harry taking the wands from Malfoy. None of it feels natural, at no point does it feel our characters are in mortal danger. It’s just pure cringe. * Molly Vs. Bellatrix (Deathly Hallows 2) - This scene (which is brilliant in the book) is just directed in the most blandest way possible. Just two uninspired camera angles and lifeless direction. It doesn’t come from a place of love and passion for the source material (like a lot of things I’ve pointed out) and is only here for pure fan service. * Scabior leering at Hermione (Deathly Hallows 1) - OK so this did happen in the book, but it still feels largely unnecessary and just outright wrong. Isn’t the fact that they captured the trio enough to convey a sense of danger? Also, I can’t shake off the feeling that the film version is only deployed because, you know, Emma Watson is hot. * Lord Voldemort hugging Malfoy (Deathly Hallows 2) - This is just a misunderstanding of character. Voldemort would just never hug anyone ever. Even in an awkward, this is what I think hugging must look like, kind of way. Voldemort is cruel, callous and insane. He only loves himself. I’ve heard this moment was improvised by Ralph Fiennes but it still doesn’t make any sense. * “I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours” (Goblet of Fire) - I’ve never understood the relevance of this moment. It wasn’t in the book, it doesn’t make any sense narratively, thematically or character-wise and the fact that Dumbledore actually (laughably) complies with this absurd request just only makes this moment even weirder. It’s just bizarre. * HARRY! DID YA PUT YA NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIYA? (Goblet of Fire) - It’s a classic. An overly quoted meme at this point. This just boils down to Mike Newel not understanding the character. This is just bad directing rather than bad acting.
