I like the Megazord aesthetic of Energon Optimus. The funny thing is, I actually saw the “year of the snake” Optimus prime on target‘s website the other day. I kind of prefer that version, because it means the Optimus prime itself is more red than gray and silver.

I read that the Alternators toy being an Optimus was at Takara's request. Pickup trucks are apparently not as popular in Japan, so they feared it wouldn't sell well unless it was a big-name character like Optimus. And then they went and had their first use of the mold be Ginrai instead.

Also, the drop test made for a horrible change on this one. You can't extend his legs the whole way. There is a mod you can do to put it back to the way it was designed and it helps his proportions a ton.

I honestly can’t hate Authentics. Sure they’re hollow and they lack in articulation and paint but they’re made to be dirt cheap so folks who can’t afford how pricy mainline figures are can still enjoy transformers and I think that’s pretty neat

I always felt there was a misunderstanding in the fandom with calling Engeron Optimus (Known as Grand Convoy in Japan) a Megazord ripoff. Engeron Optimus is more meant to be a homage to the Brave Series, right down to when Optimus combines with his Drones, it looks very much like the FINAL FUSION combination sequence from Gaogaigar (Prime even does the same t-pose as Galeon). But I understand back then, a lot of Transformers fans may not have heard of the Brave series so the first thought may have been Power Rangers when we first saw him.

And the other thing about Authentics - yes, they're extremely simplified, cheap toys meant for consumers on a budget, but - especially with the earlier waves of Authentics figures - they CAN actually look good with some paint. I have a number of the older Alpha and Bravo Authentics figures, and since I also build Gundam models, I've got a lot of quick-drying Gundam Marker paints. I painted my Authentics toys up, and they actually look good with all the details restored (including my Bravo class Prime, despite his massive truck cab backpack - my only gripe with him is his weird hand holes that make it impossible for me to give him a gun, a flaw the larger Alpha class doesn't have). They're also pretty sturdy and have quick no-nonsense transformations, which makes them ideal desk toys. A fully-painted Authentics Bravo class is the sort of thing that would be a nice stress reliever on the office desk. The ones that mainly made your "worst Primes" list can't even fulfill THAT role.

A lot of the older authentics toys aren't amazing, but how bad they are gets overblown (albeit, the one in the video is the absolute worst, alongside Starscream) They're targeted mainly at lower income families who's kids are into transformers, because proper transformers are pretty pricey compared to other toys.

It was fun to play with, but for me it's all the comprimises that had to be made to fit in the lights and sounds in the torso that really hurt it. If they hadn't had them, I think they could have done a lot more with the engineering of it, and made it a lot better as a Transformer.

I think the worst Optimus toy ever in my eyes is the voyager DOTM prime. Both it and its repaints are HORRID. Stumpy arms, goofy legs, annoying kibble, and it didn’t even transform right for me when I got it from toys r us as a kid. The deluxe bumblebee I got was great, but prime was awful… I’m so glad I got rid of it ages ago.

i actually love classics deluxe prime. it is probably that he was one of my first tf toys but genuinely if his thighs collapsed for vehicle mode, the spinny gimmick was replaced by a swivel and the chest had a slider for vehicle mode, i think he would be amazing. alternatively just do what the upcoming legacy deluxe does lol

@14:26 I’d argue that it isn’t really that close to the G1 toy, since the legs never faced upwards on the G1 figure and the headlights were never that recessed. This figure instead borrows a LOT from MP-01 which was in development prior to the release of this figure. I applaud the leg design for being essentially what Earthrise Prime did 15 years later, but the truck is just *fugly*.

Let's see, out of these I've got... Energon Optimus. Honestly, if you take out the electronics from the torso and improve the engineering, I could see that being a lot better. Titaninum, yeah dead on there. That thing would never stand without aid. And the Classics. Now there is one thing about that junker I'll defend. The gun. I really like the design of it for some reason, and I'll ever so often give it to a different Optimus. In fact next to my computer Netflix Prime is dual weilding it right now.

The Cybertron Optimus is actually a great toy. Yeah he doesn’t have shoulder pads but the transformation is possibly the most interesting any ape Prime/Primal has had and that surfboard is just cool.

Well I still like my Armada BTR Jetfire and Night Attack Demolishor. The bigger Energon sets are better, however. I got Starscream and Scorponok last year, really nice. Starscream is good in both modes while Scorponoks better mode is his beast mode. Though I like Inferno too, the cannon he comes with looks better than Skyblast's.

We're never going to agree on Energon Optimus and Wing Saber. I like the way he does the combination gimmick, with each limb offering different advantages in arm mode, and the various "operation units" as I call them work for the mission of finding, excavating, and transporting Energon. Meanwhile Wing Saber only works when he's combining with Optimus, which is why I never got him. The plane is just not cool and the robot is more of a brick than Optimus. We do agree that not-Primal from the anniversary figure is not very good looking. I didn't bother with him, either. I never really encountered the rest of this list.

I'd like to enter the giveaway. Personally, I'm not super interested in the 13 primes since most of them are kinda non characters or have so little characterization they havent quite nailed a specific design for them. HOWEVER, I would like to see what they do about Nexus Prime. If they go with the Fun Publication version, I think it would be really cool to see a modernization of the Energon Combiner formula. Ideally with regular hands (and maybe feet), I think those designs could actually be kinda cool looking, especially if they base it off a more unified color scheme like Nexus Prime's.

When I first started watching KZbin, I remember like Cybertron X aka Geekers (now I think?) and his series crappy toy reviews where he reviewed the machine wars figure. I know a lot of people will mention ones like the deluxe classics 06 figure or the Robot Masters but at least those have kind of a cool look to them in the robot modes. Machine wars fails on every level, especially considering, it’s a gutted Thunderclash

I actually like GO! Optimus Exprime. I think you can clean up the look of the robot mode if you don't display him with all the accessory parts. The dragon mode I'll admit is the weakest of his alt modes but when he has to be a tripple changer and a combiner I can forgive one mode not looking as good. You are wrong about how the combined mode works by the way. He doesn't form the top half. He can only form the middle. I can't remembed the names off hand right now so to make this simple, the leader of the vehicle team which is the police car guy, and the leader of the beast team, the Lion guy, are the ones who form the top and lower half of the combined mode. The reason it looks like Optimus is the torso is because Optimus comes with two accessory parts that are designed to go over their heads almost completly covering them up. Especially if you have the police car as the head pretty much only his arms are visible in combined mode. The lion shows up a little better as the torso cause that lion mane doesn't get completly covered by the Optimus Prime parts. But it's only the armor covering up the figures, the actual main body of the figure Optimus is in the mid section. And I still wish we got Go! in the U.S. instead of RID2015 cause that series seems to be a much better Prime sequel actually using concepts from Prime that connect the two shows rather than RID2015 which didn't include anything from Prime till the end of season 2. The Trans Scan figures are a good concept. I love the idea. It's just very poorly executed. And you know what, Bandai of Japan excuted a simular idea TWICE with Digimon. The first time with the Armor Digimon. The toys in Japan were completly different molds than what we got here in America. Rather than having a Digi-egg that transforms directly into the Armor Digimon like we got Japan made Digi-eggs that came appart and attached onto transforming Rookie Digimon to form their Armor forms which was much more in line with how it worked in the show. Veemon could transform to form Flamedramon, Raidramon, or Magnamon. The second time they did this again with the Spirit evolutions from Digimon Frontier. They all had the same basic black skeleton that would form the base of the figure. It was highly posible to be able to work with any of the spirit armors no matter how humanoid or beastly they might be. For whatever reason Bandai perfected the universal skeleton before Hasbro or Takara did and they've been making transforming toys a lot longer than Bandai has.

The worst Optimus Prime in my collection (going by community standards) is Combiner Wars Optimus, but… I can’t bring myself to hate it. He’s easily flippable between molds, he poses well, and he looks good in both modes. For reference, the only other Optimii I have are Siege GUOP (better than any use of the mold as a Magnus), the TLK repaint of the DOTM figure made almost entirely of clear plastic (so stupid he loops around to being fun), and a dinky little RID 2015 version of him that forms the upper torso of a combiner with Strongarm as his pants (which doesn’t count based on TJ’s rules).
