I appreciate the long form video man. I work as a truck driver so these help my day ever so slightly. I personally was surprised how Aemond treated Alicent. Alicent stuck up for him when he was a kid so I thought he would always remember that moment when he lost his eye.

I think Alicent loves her children deeply - she stood in front of a dragon for Aegon, she demanded an eye to avenge Aemond and she put her body in front of the smallfolk to defend Helaena during the riot. But her fundamental flaw is in how her commitment to duty and her paranoia/resentment ruined the lives of her children, pushing them into a succession crisis and war that endangers their lives. So she isn't the best mother but I don't think she doesn't care at all about her kids - like Otto she struggles to show it.

It's not unfair criticism - Viserys and Rhaenyra failed to prepare for the ascension of the 1st ruling Queen of Westeros. She isolated herself on dragonstone instead of building allies at court and touring the kingdoms to get to know the high lords and great houses, she jeopardised her reputation by trying to pass 3 bastards as legitimate heirs and she stalled acting in the war (understandably and commendably wanting peace but not having a plan to achieve said peace). Rhaenyra has been done dirty by patriarchy but she also has her own flaws and shortcomings.
