So many great musicians were behind the scenes of the songs we love to listen to. I love videos like this. I only wish there we more of them. They have great stories to tell about their experiences that no one else would be able to discuss. We use to have a little band back in the 60s (who didn’t right?) and we would do our best to play the popular song of the time. We loved the big name stars but they had a lot of help.The musicians behind the scenes don’t get enough credit. Thank you for the video.

Until about 8 years ago, I never knew who Lyle Ritz was nor was I aware of his enormously valuable contribution to the soundtrack of my life. I'm not what I consider to be a serious musician but played guitar and trumpet in high school and 30 years later picked up a uke. Of course the first song I decided to learn was the song from the movie "The Jerk". Deceptively simple sounding but it turns out to be very difficult to play AND is in a somewhat non-standard tuning! In trying to pick out the chords, my research led me to Lyle Ritz (he did the arrangement and playing on the soundtrack) and my life changed for the better! Thanks for this intimate "behind the music" document!!

On the picture that was shown of the Cascades I played with Eddie Preston Synder who was second from the left in the picture. I knew that Hal Blaine and Glen Campbell had played on Rhythm Of The Rain but didn’t know who played bass or keyboard. Rhythm Of The Rain was the ninth most played song on radio and tv in the 20th century. You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling was number one.
@kevingavigan78833 жыл бұрын
Carol Kaye played the bass, and (according to John Gummoe, who wrote the song and sang lead vocals) the arranger, Perry Botkin Jr. played the keyboards, including a celeste (emulating the sound of rain) and a keyboard solo, played on a Hammond organ, Perry Botkin Jr. played the celeste on the basic track, then overdubbed the Hammond organ (although The Cascades regular keyboardist, David Szabo, is seen holding a Vox Continental on the single cover, it was the arranger, Perry Botkin Jr., who played the solo on the record, using a Hammond organ, owned by Gold Star Studios) for the solo. Lead singer John Gummoe, who wrote the song, confirmed all the credits himself, including Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass, and Glen Campbell on guitar, along with the arranger, Perry Botkin Jr. on keyboards.

About the time this was recorded (2007), I saw Lyle in a library in Portland, playing ukelele backing a vocalist singing jazz standards. I was blown away by his playing, especially his choice of notes, which were both unexpected yet perfect. After the show, I said "I love your playing! I can't help but wonder what you would do on a guitar, with more range available." He said, "Well, if I played guitar I'd probably be one of the best guitarists in Portland. But when I play ukelele, I'm one of the best in the world." I learned he lived a short distance from my home in Southeast Portland and I was hoping to do some shows with him, but his health deteriorated around 2010 and he stopped playing.

A very minor connection - but Dolores Erickson, the model who posed for the cover of Herb Alpert's "Whipped Cream and Other Delights," lives in Longview, Washington, the town where I live.
