A classic with Richard Harris’ vocal. Now this, a brilliant standalone example of superb musicianship, glorious on its own enormous merit. Thank you for sharing it, it’s perfect.

Spring was never waiting for us, girl It ran one step ahead As we followed in the dance Between the parted pages and were pressed In love's hot, fevered iron Like a striped pair of pants MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh no! I recall the yellow cotton dress Foaming like a wave On the ground around your knees The birds, like tender babies in your hands And the old men playing checkers by the trees MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh no! There will be another song for me For I will sing it There will be another dream for me Someone will bring it I will drink the wine while it is warm And never let you catch me looking at the sun And after all the loves of my life After all the loves of my life You'll still be the one I will take my life into my hands and I will use it I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it I will have the things that I desire And my passion flow like rivers through the sky And after all the loves of my life Oh, after all the loves of my life I'll be thinking of you And wondering why MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark All the sweet, green icing flowing down Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again Oh no! Oh no No Oh no!

I remember listening to this song when I was little. Although I enjoyed the heavily orchestrated sound, I had been wondering for many decades about the cake that was mentioned. I have wondered about the significance of the cake in this song. It was in the early 90’s when I found out about the significance and it was explained by Richard Harris. He explained that the cake represented the love between two people who built it together only for it to be left be abandoned and wasted. Thank you, Richard.

So many people mock this song without a clue as to the use of metaphor. It's a beautiful song both in terms of the music and the lyrics.

Webb and company recorded this in LA. Webb flew to London with this and Harris recorded over. In pre-computer mixing days, Harris had to do numerous, complete takes to get the one we all know and love. Webb kept reminding Harris that it was MacArthur, not MacArthur's, but Harris told Webb he wasn't able to sing it without the additional S.

As much as I clown on the lyrics of this song, it is spectacular. I ADORE the section starting at 4:53, it’s so dramatically moving.

Richard Harris: “MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark.” Mr. Harris, could you please say “MacArthur Park” instead? Richard Harris: “That’s what I said, “MacArthur’s Park.” “OK, perfect.”

Hi Derian, I have a question. Is this backing from the multitrack master or was it achieved by software which effectively deletes the vocal? If it's the latter, you've done an amazing job to get the backing track so clean. Thanks for posting it.
