I was hear for the beginning of Scarlet and Violet, I remember you breaking down how absurd things were, it’s a shame we’re at that point with English right now, going off what happened with Japanese I know it will eventually go down, but it’s looking like the next three sets are going to be hard for me to pick up. 💯 agree with you. Actually had the same thought last week. You know why, 'cause all of a sudden, booster boxes and loose packs that were readily available on the Japanese Pokémon Center site are just completely gone now. And I mean it was just the speed of how many sets were just completely bought up at the same time. This after them being up for sale foooor months on there. This shit is getting annoying. If I was like others I should be grateful with the sudden value of cards I have in English and Japanese going up. But I don't plan on selling. So not being able to purchase stuff again on my own time-frame, (I'm on a budget) just sucks. It makes me regret not fomoing and going into debt by buying it all up when they were available. As I'm now probably not gonna be able to get stuff anytime soon if ever if I get priced out by secondary market.

It appears to be a secondary market trend that when English is too expensive and incredibly scarce that people will divert to Japanese cards to still be able to reasonably enjoy their hobby. With that being said, I have no desire to buy cards I can't read, however they do look good, and can see why people do enjoy them. Skipped surging sparks altogether because of the state of the market. I'm slowly backing off of the hobby and picking more niche forms of collecting. I just don't want to feel like I'm being exploited or manipulated by scalping, poketuber pumps, and market manipulation, as well as botting discords basically turning collectors into scalpers & investors. So yeah, I'm stepping away (not entirely) but definitely narrowing down my tastes. I'm not gonna enable this type of market. It's gone crazy, too gross, not enjoyable. The enjoyable aspects of it kind of being casual and nonchalant are gone. Having to line up before stores open and stuff is not my steeze.

I was hunting in 2021 and had a group chat with some others doing the same. I saw Japanese boxes as a win for multiple reasons and when I tried to get other people on board nobody cared. I got multiple booster boxes of Sky Legend, Miracle Twin, Double Blaze, and Remix Bout for around $52 per box (including shipping). Each box is well over $200. I like the prospect of Korean cards. Prices are low on desirable sets and since k-pop is so popular these days, I think that Korean influence is more prominent in the west than it ever was.

From an art style I've always prefered the Japanese cards, even though I cannot read them lol. Over 95% of my collection is in Japanese. Mostly PSA 10's but I do have 1 binder of cards that I may go back to in some way due to the ongoing cost of keep collecting PSA 10's. I think there are maybe 10 more cards I'd really like to have in PSA 10, most of which have dropped in price quite a bit since I first put them on my list (but at the time were rather unattainable). i'd rather the market stay the way it is for a bit, let me complete my collection (for now).

In my pokemon league, I feel like i'm the only player who cares about japanese cards. The shop and overall consensus says "no one cares about japanese." I honestly couldn't care less, cheaper for me, ig. I collect the cards I like! Print quality is usually better and these IR artworks in SV are like 5x more expensive in English. I'm not playing with these cards, but the artworks are immaculate. When I first got into Pokemon in '99, I always thought the Japanese versions looked cooler! That fossil Mew, especially! At the same time, my English cards that I do cherish, are the ones I've personally pulled. Sure, I trade, sell and buy sometimes, but Japanese cards are the ones I almost exclusively buy just to have. It sucks not having product to open whenever, like I only shop at walmart for pokemon and the occasional bottle of alcohol. Luckily, my target seems pretty stocked, so cheers hoping we* find some Prismatic. Otherwise, I'm good. I'm not paying more than* msrp at release for anything. My name is Not Mark!!!

I have some really old sets and a sizable collection, and when these market surges happen, I just sell some of my extra boxes and boom...I have enough money to buy tons of boxes once they hype dies down again. I miss early 2010s Pokémon KZbin with Max, UnlistedLeaf etc. Mainly Max, so many hype beast investor bro KZbinrs now lol. Where were these guys when you could buy the entire base set on eBay for £60/$90? Was a good time between 1999 to 2016 where you could buy complete sets for a hundred or 2 at most bar a few cards. I grabbed the entire neo destiny set in first edition for about £180 barely 10 years ago, now it’s like 1 card can go for that. Who decided this? With all the BS going on with the current sets I’m just gonna focus on finishing the sword and shield era and some of my nearly finished Sun and Moon sets, I think this eevee set coming out is just gonna be like crown zenith and be Saturated after a while anyway, just might take longer than usual as Pokémon themselves have caught on and are generating hype by controlling the flow of product. Feels obvious they’ll print stacks of it all year long though, try not to get caught up in the hype as it’ll die down eventually bar a few cards.

Now I’m on the other side after a yearish of enjoying a normal pokemon market and it sucks being caught up in it. Simplified Chinese has been sick tho, the cards look great like Japanese cards and they’re so cheap. Where is the hype coming from? 151 has way more hype now than it did in 2023. I remember getting $30-$40 ETBs and $65-$80 UPCs because tiktok, LCS, and even massive retailers were having amazing deals they kept shoving down people's throats. I took a break after 151 in later 2023 and imagine my fucking surprise coming back in November of 2024 and the it's as if 151 has just released a week ago. I love Paldea Evolved, it's an amazing set that's been slept on, but it was never that popular until recently. All of a sudden, MSRP is deemed a 'good deal' for Paldea Evolved when tons of LCS couldn't budge the set for months. I remember seeing it go for $80 per booster box in 2023 as a deal for Black Friday. Shit's wack rn.

People got into Pokemon (completely new or for the first time in many years) because of 151, just like celebrations brought back people, and XY evolutions before that. Social media and PokeTubers grew in number when rip and shipping on whatnot and TikTok got $$$ into pockets quick. And now you have the storm of old collectors, old investors, flippers, and scalpers, and now new fans all trying to get as much as they can.

I play the game. I cannot read Japanese. I only ever open English packs as a result, meaning all my pulls are English and I don't want a huge mix of languages. That being said, I might pick up some singles from Terestal Festival. Depends mostly on my pulls for Prismatic Evolutions. Also, I am super happy to see others say they'd rather go for Japanese. I probably would switch over to Japanese if I didn't also play.

I’m a small time content creator and it’s highly annoying. I literally picked this hobby 3 months ago due to price and availability. I was buying JP boxes for 60-75$ and my recent order of shiny ex 80, 151 - 165$! (CAD) and even terrestrial festival best price I could get was 115 a box when they retail for 80. Battle partners. A standard set. Was at the 100$ mark then blew up to over 180$ in a few days so that’s out. There’s like a small window of cards you can buy. Like I’d say jump on some stellar crown. I just like opening packs. But paying 15-30$ per pack is stupidity.

Most cards are way too expensive still for my taste I like those Pokémon full art that feature the trainer and die of them are too pricey for me though. Doesn’t mean it’s the same for other collectors with deeper pockets

Japanese will get it’s moment and then when all the bro money is pumped into that, I could see Chinese cards getting their pump. Same print quality as Japanese and they have the American card backing. I love the SwSh alt art cards from the Chinese product

The Japanese resurgence is already happening In the last week or 2 the prices of my Japanese supplier have gone crazy Japanese 151 has gone from $70 a box to $100 and Terastal has gone from $50 to $80 and don’t even get started on Battle Partners not even worth buying yet. The singles are going to explode soon for past sets
