It may sound silly when they talking about putting on music while you play but honestly... Put on the Tie Fighter Chase theme from Episode 4, after the Falcon escapes the Death Star and you will have so much more fun. The music almost feels strangely timed to when you are setting your movement dials and when the fights take place. Honestly it adds so much to the game.

@@ShiYuMeng2 @thunder sheild you do realise that was the sole reason why 2.0 was created, the first edition had bloating of upgrades locked behind expansions and models you didn't want. They learnt from their mistakes, took a ballsy reboot move and released upgrade packs so no player feels left out and isn't locked out for an ability behind expansion box they must buy even though it's just the card they want. It would've been way easier for them to continue with 1.0 shenanigans as a broken mess, take the money and leave. Additionally to drive my point more so, they added points in the app and not on the cards, again another area they could have capitalised off off of the consumer by forcing you to buy new cards, instead the app will be updated with any meta changes

@@ShiYuMeng2 Azzy Grizzly Fett said, they have actualy purposely tried to fix this with the 2.0 launch, they have removed alot of the powerful upgrade cards from being so limited like you had explained. Alot of the time you can get the same cards now out of every box (as long as of course the ship you purchased can use it, they aint gonna give you a R2 unit in your Tie-Fighter. And to further solve the issue they are now releasing upgrade packs, little card packs that legit only have the cards one might want. Like the Palpatine example you made. They are trying to expand they way to get the cards. Sadly Pay 2 win in the capacity as you complain will exist in any minatures capturing game, even Warhammer could be argued at this point in this games design phase

i love x-wing, still one of our main go-to games. the mind games of trying to anticipate your opponents moves and countering for it while they're doing the same thing all in your heads until you finally reveal the manuever dials and see if you made the right choice, it's all so much fun!!!!

I love this game. It's a hugely versatile game. If you want to just throw some ships down and pew pew, you can do that. If you want to have a huge battle with a whole bunch of ships flying around, you can do that. If you want to play competitively and fine tune a list to maximum efficiency, you can do that too. And the competitive community is amazing. As for the aforementioned balance, there are some but I wouldn't go so far as to say you only win if your squad is A,B, or C. More like there are successful archetypes but multiple ships can fit those archetypes. But yes it is true that competitively there are ships that are just crap.

Pro tip: if anyone wants to play this game without having to buy a physical copy, there is a really good version on tabletop simulator (a PC video game) where you can use whatever ships you want, and all the moves are done automatically

That was a pretty good video. I do agree with the one criticism. I play both X-Wing and Attack Wing (I own over 100 ships for each system) and I always did wish that X-Wing would adopt Attack Wing's more unique customisation system, where ships and pilots are separate cards. You can have Picard commanding the USS Voyager in AW, for example, but you can't have Vader flying anything other than his Tie Advanced in X-Wing, which is a bit of a missed opportunity. Another criticism I'd level against it are factions. X-Wing started with two factions, and moved on to a third later, but Attack Wing has a ton of them! And unlike X-Wing, you can cross cards across factions (paying a +1pt penalty), so you're never "stuck". Also, while X-Wing is probably my second-favourite minis game right now, it does have one major contender taking the top spot: Armada. THAT is the Star Wars game I've always wanted and finally got.

I kind of enjoy the game but didn't really feel welcome when I tried to play at a local meetup. It also looked like most of the people there had £££ to throw at the game and had bought 8-10 copies of certain ships just to get the upgrade cards.

is the big ship in correct scale? looks kinda small with the xwing as reference. it's not the big "mothership" from the movies tho right? ( I only know the star destroyer, idk the name of the rebel's counterpart, which is what I mean) so potentially there'd be even bigger ships?

The capital ships aren't to scale with the fighters. To do so, the capital ships would either be prohibitively large, or the fighters uselessly small.

X-Wing is an amazing game. Although if you want to play it competetively, the current state of the mata game is pretty annoying...

There are a few squad archetypes that are incredibly dominant. Some ships are almost entirely non-competetive, one of those being the X-Wing itself, with few exceptions. So if you make a squad you love, and show up at a tournament with it, if your squad isn't A, B, or C, you're probably going to get stomped and walk away feeling bummed out. When they say in the review that most games come down to just two ships left, one on each side? The game in 2017 has hit a point where not everything is a viable option to make a balanced game. The game is still fun and awesome, but if you want to go to tournaments, it's a whole different animal. And the rules aren't so simple anymore lol. Just look at the latest FAQ. That's what you're expected to at least be somewhat familiar with if you're going to tournaments.

The T65 swings aren't great but I find the T70s are still good. But you're right about some of the ships being downright useless. The A-wing being a prime example.

Personally if you're not already into any miniatures games neither. the battle tech beginner box is probably the best miniatures game for beginners but if you have some miniatures games armada is probably better if you ask me

I think X-Wing is one of the best games out there, even if you compare it to to boardgames! One day, i played it with 2 friends of mine who were totally new to this game. The game is teached within 10 Minutes, everybody creates his own ship/squad and then you start. So easy to understand, such nice rules and deep decisions (Pilot Level), quick Actions and - in my opinion the funniest part of the game: the movement really matters! It's so much fun to lure a clunky enemy ship into an asteroidfield and outmaneuver it with a tiny speedy A-Wing (totally got you on that) :) The game length for a 100-Points-Squadran is about an hour - maybe +/- 15 minutes. Totally love it! And the best part is that you don't Need to buy all stuff. The game is so balanced, that you can just buy the ships you like and have fun for years!

@@billable1861 I would disagree that it takes more money to stay competitive. Id actually say the opposite. Since the points are now all online it prevents old ships from becoming outdated. Majority of ships in the game are competitive. In fact there are a lot of good 3 ship lists that are extremely competitive which means its relatively cheap. I guess my question is why do you think its more expensive now? I personally haven't experienced that but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Great review. X Wing is one of those games I go through spurts on - times when I can't get enough of it, then times when it sits on the shelf for months. Instead of more and more waves of new ships, what I'd really like to see are just "boosters" of pilots, title cards, modifications, etc., that support existing ships, increasing their playability. I'm probably alone in that opinion, though.

Interesting way to approach it different than getting detailed in the mechanics. I'm impressed the way FFG's hasn't duplicated pilot abilities and ship & upgrade capabilities while still maintaining the feel of the SW universe and what the special abilities of those particular characters would be ie. Poe Dameron's focus or Vaders two actions per turn. There can be a lot of time invested (besides money) in pre-game squad building. obstacle and squad placement are very important yet glossed over in most videos and FFG's info outside of Paul Heaver's old Turn Zero article on their site which only explains so much. a new player just won't get the importance. They should explain that better. It's almost like building an RPG character and party prior to gameplay. One thing is the force awakens learn to play guide says nothing about not being able to put maneuver templates down to gage movement prior to selecting them. but the 2012 core set does. I think the 2012 rules of play are written better and more accessible in plain english. but that was before the game got so unexpectedly huge by FFG's admission. the FA rules reference is excellent though with cross referenced glossary of terms but they should communicate the fact there are FAQ pdf's on their site with more than important info at least for competitive player. they had to decide on consistent text to fit on cards. But even then players on the wiki site have to ask for clarification there's more than 500 upgrades. It's odd the core sets have not indication it's a core set except for what I call a graphic design eater egg in small print above the UPC code. A major selling point missed especially when they say core set needed to play prominently on the expansion packs. It's really a Starter Core set imho it has the ships cards dials to get started and the core components to play any game of X-wing. I need to know that a lot more than designed by I can't remember his name lol It's a euro game publisher trend to put a designers' name on it like an author of a book which doesn't mean much to players imho. nice touch for the designer. but not a selling point at all. The competitive meta game unfortunately makes certain lists ubiquitous to the point a new player thinks those are the only ships in the game when there's over 60. Jumpmasters need to be NERF'd with a giant NERF upgrade card for everyone else. Not bad for a ship that' snot in the movies and Dengar a PS 9(!?!) The reason there's no prequel ships outside of the ARC-170 rebel retrofit and a shuttle token in the 2012 core set imho is the game's called X-wing meaning original trilogy and beyond with the exception of rogue one. It should be called U-boat lol the game design balance would be out of wack probably with the prequel ship capabilities. My random thoughts MTFBWY

Guys... one of the things I love is how well the game is supported. Now... they have colored stands (blue, red, purple, etc) to further separate your squadrons. I own, the "Wings of Glory" system (WWI) and agree that it is great to play. Yes, it is a major cash cow, but as "cash cows" go, they don't come better looking and with more variety. Where I tend to draw the line is the very large ships. That is where one should invest in "Armada". Great review... love the goofing about, and keep up the good work.

Robbie Keith The cost is sure a factor (as all collectible games are) but especially in miniatures games i don't like the gameplay so much. I play board games for the intricate systems and puzzles that i have to manage and solve and this kind of games don't manage to offer me that. Even abstracts manage to satisfy me but not miniatures.

You even have fun when your losing? I get frustrated when I'm losing in xwing...either at my stupid move I 2nd guessed myself on or bad dice lol. I love close games whether I win or lose, but lopsided games where I make mistakes or like I said, bad dice, that is not fun for me. But thats a fault of mine not the games lol. I will say one thing I absolutely hate about miniatures (can carry into board games as well but to me its worse in games like xwing) is forgetting something from an upgrade card and you can't correct it even if the error just happened. Like if I forget a fcs target lock and we haven't really done anything else it can be too late, even though the ability would have triggered. I hate the aspect of forgetful errors in games. I want to win against an opponent who didn't forget anything, not win because he forgot something
