Long time readers may recall, that 100 mil subscription goal thing was actually part of the FTC leaks. The 100 mil isn't even the insane part of it (I mean it's insane, but it goes deeper!) They wanted like 1/3rd of those subs to be cloud only users. Like this was at a time when Stadia was crashing and burning and they're like "yeah, we'll have like 30 mil users who own no hardware and play 100% through the cloud."

Heads up to anyone on Xbox chomping at the bit to play the FF7R games-the trophy lists on PlayStation are absolute trash. Seriously, they’re some of the worst out there: tedious, grueling, needlessly ‘difficult in the worst possible ways’ trophies populate the list. It’s a real chore to get 100%+platinum. The game director has gone on record to officially apologize for his disgusting failure regarding the selfish, trophy hunter unfriendly nature of the trophy list but they have yet to be patched. If you’re all about the gamerscore, BEWARE.

Is that why Microsoft is putting Game Pass on Fire Stick at the same time that they're developing games for other consoles? Even when all first party Xbox games go to other platforms I think there is more than enough to have a dedicated Xbox podcast. 30+ studios making games to talk about Services and how they evolve and change Hardware, handheld and future Xbox consoles. If they allow their OS to be put in 3rd party hardware it’s another thing to talk about and could be good to discuss some of the better hardwares to play your Xbox games on. Cloud and how it keeps evolving They have 3-5 showcases a year with arguably the best E3 style showcase every year. There is so much to talk about, fuck the doom and gloom or console warriors negativity. I just wanna talk and listen about Xbox and their games and products that I enjoy.

I think Microsoft as a games publisher will exist for a very long time. But hardware…not so much. Enjoy it while it lasts. It’s not about hate. It’s about the market reality. And the fact is that the hardware sales have tanked. I own a series S and I think it’s a neat little machine. But I’m not deluded enough to think Xbox will keep making hardware for decades. That isn’t happening.

I think we’ll have an Xbox console for at minimum another full generation and possibly the one after depending on if we still have consoles in the mid 2030’s

I think something that is becoming apparent is that installed base numbers are not created equal. 30M PS5s and Switches are not the same as the 30M Series X/S out there. 30M Xboxes isnt a bad number, historically, but when it seems that those 30M are spending far less (be it GP, etc) its clear things needed to change.

"Xbox players are not spending money on their console." I can only speak for myself but I have completely stopped buying anything on the console since the beginning of this year. I have no confidence that the platform will exist with their recent multiplatform pivot, so why would I give them money for my games to just disappear? All my games are purchased on PC or PS now and I am sure that's the case for many others. You can't give people no reason to buy or invest in your console and expect that it will positively impact your platform. It was entirely predictable that there would be a major drop off even from where the numbers were before. The clock is ticking.

​@ There is no lack of critical thinking in my statements. This is Xbox/Microsoft we are talking about. Why would they say their games are exclusive and then put them elsewhere? Why would they say they are going to do VR and then not do it? Why would they sell the Windows phone only to shut it down? Why did they shut down mixer? Sometimes the realities that you are working with change. What's true today is not guaranteed to be true tomorrow. If they give no reason for people to buy a console, that leads to no one buying things on the console (as we've seen is happening). That leads to devs not supporting the console, which again leads to even less of a reason for consumers to buy it. This is of course a hypothetical but I think we are already seeing it play out. Since the beginning of the year, console sales have plummeted to what can only be described as pathetic numbers. One of the most popular games right now is seeing only 2% of their revenue come from Xbox players. They have shown a willingness over the years to shut down what is not hitting the goals they have set for it. I don't think Xbox as a whole will shut down even if they don't hit their targets, the more likely outcome for that will be more studio closures/job cuts. But if no one is buying the console(s), I can see them shutting down the consoles and sticking with third party publishing and PC storefronts.

Respectfully disagree with COGs take that we should be happy that Satya didn't kill off Xbox in 2021. I would have far less to lose, because my library would be much smaller and I could have invested that money into Playstation instead. I don't appreciate being taken for a ride for another half a generation while behind the scenes a trillion dollar company is penny pinching and too poor to compete with companies a tenth the size. Companies don't care about fans feelings of course, but I wonder if there will be consequences if you basically sell out your 30M customers and then assume they won't boycott you down the line. I'm choosing to bury my head in the sand and continue enjoying my system of choice for now, at least until I hear an actual announcement about Halo getting ported. At that point I will switch all my multiplat purchases to PS5 and then just wait to see if the show some sort of reason to feel safe about my digital library, maybe if they get Xbox native games running on PC or something. I wouldn't put it past MS to pull our access to purchased games, I believe Nintendo has done it but perhaps I'm misremembering. They told us the future was TVTVTV and always on waggle at the Xbox One launch, so I still hold out hope they could panic and reverse course and keep at least a core group of exclusives if we kick up enough fuss. ...Or they just nuke us and regret it later, Windows Phone style. 😅

Xbox One (except for a few) and Xbox Series games are already native on PC. My entire Xbox library for those consoles is on Steam. What I hope Microsoft is working on is getting original Xbox and Xbox 360 games on PC through emulation. There are plenty of Xbox-exclusive games from those eras that I'd buy again on PC. :)

I don't understand this xbox philosophy "either #1 or nothing". Nintendo was always second place ever since the SNES(let's be honest the wii was a wii sports machine) up until the Switch. Xbox could've gone on survival mode for decades with the windows money. The interesting thing about this episode of the podcast is that your Xbox financials discussion really shows the difference between the perspective of a fan and the perspective of a CEO running a $3 trillion company. As a fan, you see Xbox as this great thing that you've had in your life, and you think Microsoft is doing what they need to do to survive, and you're worried about Xbox and Microsoft. But from the perspective of the CEO running a $3 trillion company, Xbox can be shut down in a couple of days, and for the CEO it would be Tuesday. It really wouldn't bother Microsoft to lose Xbox, not at all. And that's the funny thing about how great that divide is between the fans' perspective of Xbox and the CEO's perspective of Xbox. The bottom line is that Microsoft doesn't have to care about Xbox. It's literally a drop in the bucket for them. And if Xbox isn't bringing people into the things they do care about, like Windows or cloud or AI, then they'll see no reason to have Xbox around.

They have to stick around in the hardware space at least one more generation and continue to push as long as they can just to justify that massive purchase. Throwing shade at Nintendo is a WILD take. It's doing everything Xbox SHOULD be doing. They are investing in their ip, making sure they have frequent releases and their games are of STELLAR quality. (most of them). Xbox has sold about 30 million? Switch has 150 million units sold! Why do we not have more Halo, gears, Fable games. Those games would sell. It's what nintendo does. Been listening to defining duke for the last 2 years now, i am invested in the xbox ecosystem even though i do not have an xbox anymore... unfortunately this doom and gloom narrative that matty has been pushing by reporting what other people are reporting and without really going into detail (see the information report or the marvel rivals revenue) is a bit annoying. Instead of trying to focus on business practices and budget of a trillion dollar company without the necessary knowledge i would like for him to focus on what he does best, talking about games. It should only be about this.

Microsoft will swear to hell and back that they're not done with hardware but if they're pulling the trigger on Halo this early I'd honestly be shocked if the next-gen Xbox, whatever form that takes, sells even half of what Series X/S manages in the end. This is basically a move that while probably great for Halo especially for getting those multiplayer numbers back up to peak 2006/07 Halo, is already setting the expectation that Xbox as a console is just not necessary anymore for accessing their games. People think MS will honor their commitment to keep Xbox as a console around but they've already demonstrated their ability to just kill off hardware initiatives when they're no longer viable financially, and when they see that they're making so much more money just profitting off of PlayStation, Switch/Switch 2 and Steam, I think it's going to endgame in them officially leaving the console space mid-gen after their next console. I don't see a way this assures anything long term for the platform And I'm probably still going to get MCC on PS5/Switch 2 just for the sheer novelty of Halo being on something that isn't Xbox/PC. I've already logged in like 300 hours on Steam but I'd do it all again especially with cross progression and crossplay multiplayer. Especially Switch 2 for portable Halo 3 and Reach

Xbox can be saved. It’s not even hard to save it to be honest with you. It’s going to have to do something that some may not like but the brain can be saved easily. You have to go third-party. Yes, you continue to make first party platforms, but your games have to be sold third-party. All you have to do is let people know we’re making first party platforms for at least 2 more generations after this one. Guess what in two more generations we won’t be talking generations anymore we won’t be talking rivalries anymore. In the next 15 years, there will be just one platform. After that, you need to be third-party and just make money on software sales where ever you can sell a game that’s what you do and you put the Xbox logo everywhere you can. I don’t care if it’s on a Nintendo switch. I don’t care if it’s on a PlayStation, I don’t care if it’s on an LG TV people need to know you can play our games wherever you want to Hit the button and we are there. There is a caveat with that. You need to decide how people are going to play your games. Are you going to create some type of app like we see with steam some type of launcher where you can purchase your games and go through a portal of some sort and you’re in the Xbox universe. If so, you need to make it and it needs to be really well done in fact that’s what I would recommend doing. You should let people know when you buy this game if you ever want to jump into our universe, you can play the game then. I don’t care if you buy it on PlayStation I don’t care if you buy it on Xbox I don’t care if you buy it on PC when you buy it register it back to us you can jump in and play it as long as you come through our app Our portal

It’s difficult to fully convey how disappointing it is to hear the extent to which shareholder and C-Suite greed impacted the trajectory of Xbox so deeply this generation. It really felt like there was so much potential, especially in 2021 when they considered pulling the plug. Disheartening, and demoralizing as a fan of video games in general. I’m sure I speak for others when I say we’ll be here as a patron to the Dukes even as the show grows and changes. Thanks for all the quality content you all provide. Your work is appreciated 🙏

I hate to say this, but trajectory could never go up. People were not going to leave their PlayStation platform behind and anybody who knows how people purchase media content no it’s hard for people to leave digital content behind. Once you start buying songs in your Apple library odds are you’re not leaving that library ever. Same thing here once you start buying PlayStation games in a digital library that PlayStation maintains you’re not leaving that’s just it. Microsoft has to find a different way to sell games to those customers you have to go third-party. That’s your only way to make money. Once you do that other business strategies open up to you now you have to think differently about how to attack your problems because your problems are sales of content now and if you can sell your content anywhere you need to make great content and get people to buy it or subscribe to itif you can get a subscription service on the platform

That's what a lot of Xbox fanboys don't get, not even Microsoft get it till now 🤷🏻‍♂️. They need to port their Xbox games to Playstation and Nintendo, and both don't want Gamepass on their consoles because they have their own services.

Those are the lies of Phil Spencer. Xbox could've been a competitor again if Phil simply did what was done back in the Xbox 360 era. The Xbox 360 had exclusive first-party games that you couldn't even get on PC (except Gears of War years later). The 360 had exclusive or timed exclusive second-party games. There were deals to bring DLC for popular games first to the Xbox 360. In other words, people were given reason after reason after reason for why they needed to buy an Xbox 360. That sent the trajectory way up, even after the PS2 crushed the original Xbox and people had all their games on their PS2 (and this whole "digital library" argument is just nonsense since physical games are locked to specific consoles as well). So, it's an absolute lie that the Xbox Series X/S was doomed to failure because the Xbox One lost "the most important generation" (as Phil sells it). In fact, Nintendo also lost that generation with the Wii U, and then Nintendo came roaring back with the Switch. Nintendo got the hardware right. They got the marketing right. And their exclusive games gave people plenty of reasons to buy a Switch. If Microsoft got all those three things right with the Xbox Series X/S, that sales trajectory would've gone way up.

They will always do their own thing and they will always be separate to any other company because their Nintendo they'll always do really well because they have cornered the market on family friendly gaming. Nobody can touch them. Secondly I think what Phil said is correct. They did lose the most important generation because while people were building up a a DIGITAL library that will be played forever on PlayStation (well unless games get pulled like some have) Xbox were more worried about becoming a social media box. This lost a lot of fans (me included). Now Xbox is trying to rush by buying studios to build back up what they lost and it's too late. There is no catching up now. Now it's adapt or die, I want to see Xbox be a contender because competition just breeds better products for us all but there is just no fight there anymore. They need to adapt and start selling what they have on other consoles.

About the SMITE 2 part, they had to do an engine shift because they've been on Unreal Engine 3 and hit a wall on what they want to do due to the engine limitations. On top of not being able to hire much due to how old the engine is. They've also mentioned they're trying to add the old gods and modes as fast as they can, full release won't be for another 2 years maybe. I do understand where you're coming from but it's not a sleight of hand based on them explaining the situation for the past year.

If Halo or Gears goes to Playstation I think Phil walks. A device needs is brand identity. Satya coming in and becoming more involved in the last few years has only been bad. I dont want to get to down in the dumps but even with fun games like Stalker 2 (Which i cannot play as a main mission is bugged) & Indy is great but its taken too long to try the 30 studios on Gamepass every 2/3 months experiment.

I agree that Phil will likely retire soon, but I have to disagree that this is all Satya's doing while Phil is just some innocent CEO who wants Xbox to be the #1 console. Satya is the one who promoted Phil to Head of Xbox when Don Mattrick left. Then Phil became the CEO of Microsoft Gaming when that division was restructured in 2022. My personal belief is that, since Microsoft investors have never liked the Xbox hardware and always wanted Microsoft to get rid of the Xbox hardware, my belief is that Satya put Phil in charge of overseeing Microsoft's exit from the Xbox hardware. Think about it. Phil was made Head of Xbox back in 2014. Since then, Phil has been weakening the Xbox hardware by taking exclusives off the platform and constantly talking about the need for everyone to play games anywhere they want (which speaks of multiplatform gaming). Phil has been talking about wanting to make Xbox the #1 console while his actions only cause the Xbox hardware to sell fewer units every year. And for years now, Phil has been trying to groom Xbox fans into believing that exclusive games are bad and that the console business is dying because of exclusive games (honestly, you can hear some Xbox fans just parroting Phil's words). Then, in 2024, Phil fires the first shot of Xbox games going to Nintendo and Sony platforms while moving all Xbox developers over to making games for all platforms. That sounds like a 10-year plan, now doesn't it? It went from 2014 to 2024, and now, here we are, with Microsoft taking steps to exit hardware, just as their investors have always wanted. And do you want to know about another 10-year plan? Game Pass. It started in 2017, and now, we're hearing that if Game Pass doesn't get to 100 million subs by 2027, it'll be shut down. That's 2017 to 2027, and that's another 10-year plan. So what's the next 10-year plan? It's probably Microsoft as a multiplatform publisher, starting this year, 2025. And by 2035, they'll evaluate that and see if they want to make any changes. Like, if their games aren't selling very well or not well enough to be worth the costs of development, then they'll get out of gaming entirely. I don't think they will, though. I think they'll have enough success to stay in gaming.

This show sometimes feels more like "Defending Duke" than "Defining Duke" and Microsoft's not giving much help there. There are Microsoft studio games still worth covering like Indiana Jones, but a pivot would certainly help with less doom and gloom (coming from a fan of the show who gave up on Xbox and switched to PS during the XB1 generation fwiw).

While this report represents the state of mind of a CEO in 2021, fans should look at the actions taken. Xbox officially doubled down on gaming with ABK. They are seriously not going anywhere. Phil even stated that the brand, despite the constant manic freak out, is set up for the long term future. Will they reach their own standards by 2030? I don’t think so. But targets move, and 30-35 million subs so far is a decent start. The decision to go multiplat to make sales hand over fist on other platforms is an astute one. It will serve as a financial/time buffer to support their brand and business until they eventually reach a higher number of Gamepass subscribers. For people doubting Gamepass will grow, look at the 2025 line up. If a line up like that can be kept steady eventually people on other platforms will get tired of paying full price for games and switch over to the Gamepass ecosystem. Even if Gamepass is no longer desirable by Xbox, their future is locked by 13 billion dollar franchises and around 500 million monthly players. I wish more people fully appreciated this. Xbox as a brand isn’t going anywhere.

I’ve only paid around $300 total for the last 5 years of GP. I’ve completed over 100 games easily, half of which were new AAA releases that I would never replay. In fact I rarely replay games except for MP shooters and sports games.

Do you go to the movies and think a year later “damn that was a waste of money I don’t even own the movie”? The experience and memories is all that matters to 90% of gamers. Have a disc collection or a massive digital library if you want but you’re in the minority. The last 4 years of Game Pass it has more than made up for what I pay for it. This year alone I’d have to spend $700(a PS5 Pro) just to play Xbox’s First party games this year but I get to play them all for $240 in Game Pass and that includes my year subscription for online play plus many indie and 3rd party games.

You might think that some third-party developers are holding out because the bag isn’t big enough that is not the case. What have we been saying for months which you somehow forgot during this conversation we’ve been saying for months that the cost for developing video games is going up And third-party developers are having trouble making money. When you need some money because your game didn’t sell well guess what you gotta go get a bag from somebody and that is when Microsoft will say we have a bag for you. You’ll be soft might be on that list trying to get a bag Because they want to avoid having to sell the company. Pick any number of third-party developers that are dropping games this year what happens if they don’t go well guess what you gotta go get that bag and you gotta get it from Microsoft. Understand something Microsoft has one thing nobody else has that you have not discussed. They have Money And that is a leverage like no other you can talk about how Sony is winning the market and they are they’re winning the race, but Sony doesn’t have what Microsoft has. They don’t have money oh they’re making money. They’re having trouble making money but they’re making some money. Microsoft has Buku bucks. They got money in the bank. Now this venture into video games needs to turn the profit for them, but to be honest, it doesn’t have to do it right away. Investors will argue. It needs to turn a profit right away or else people who really will call the shots at the company. They know all they have to do is wait This video games industry is not a place that’s turning profits unless you’re one of those live service games that’s making good money. Guess what I said it was a game, but it’s not the waiting game. You might think this isn’t Sony waiting for Microsoft to collapse. Microsoft isn’t going to collapse. Microsoft can wait out Sony trust me they really could. One day Sony is going to have to publish their games on more platforms because they cost too much money to make Microsoft can wait for that moment no problem. It’ll be 10 years from now probably but they can wait. It’s the other third-party developers that need money now. Square needs money now. Atlas guess what they need money now. Sega they need money now. Ubisoft needs money right now. I can continue and name other companies that need money now because the cost of developing games is going through the roof and who has that money Microsoft they’re literally going to tell them we don’t want your money.
