I thought this was a bad move for Nvidia here to put more wattage into this hardware as most gamers won't need the extra horsepower unless they use them for mining crypto or for video and music and AI content framing/creation here to make money off of their PCs at home. I run for instance 2 ASIC AL2 lites at home from iceriver and they both need 500-watts and they get hot so the two slot design to me is questionable if some games run the gpu at a full 575 watts on the FE model before third party makers put in OC mods into the hardware and software in the aftermarket. This is again why I was so lukewarm on the desktop 5090 here as the two slot design has to prove itself and how well it can remain cool under full load.

It doesn't make sense for the to spend the same R&D as Nvidia to make a card in the least popular market segment while having a much smaller market share. Not to mention Nvidia's massive server/workstation presence which helps them sell many high end GPU dies effectively lowering the R&D cost of the RTX5090 (just like Ryzen vs Intel).

I love y’all’s reviews! I will say my use cases don’t fall into what you describe here, but I still watch anyway. The 2 reasons I’m personally interested in the 5090 are: local AI performance for coding (which is why I can afford one in the first place lol), and VRchat, which can use pretty much unlimited VRAM. Not only that but upcoming VR headsets have WAY more pixels than a 4k monitor. There are actual recreational uses for more than 24gb of VRAM, but the professional use case is also there. UEVR with my Bigscreen Beyond brings my 3080 10gb to its knees lol.

AMD was able to double the performance at same power and using half the bandwidth ON THE SAME NODE with the 6900XT compared to the RadeonVII... So NO, being on the same node isn't an excuse.

@Lionheart11883 сағат бұрын

@theocmaniak3 сағат бұрын
Bad argument, Radeon VII had a pretty small chip, since a lot of the space was occupied by HBM2 memory. 6900XT used that space for computing power instead, which obviously made the card a lot faster. Now 6900XT had 520 mm² and that is a HUGE die. 5090 has 744 mm², to make it more powerful, it would need to be bigger still.
@SineCordis3 сағат бұрын
Ada was a very good architecture unlike Vega though. With Blackwell there wasn't much room for architectural improvement apparently. With Maxwell, Nvidia delivered 50% better Perf/W on the same node, but that's something you can only do once.

Hearing Steve mention "CPU limitations" on the Ryzen 9800X3D is mind-boggling, yet the reasons are clear. Beyond poor optimization by game developers, Moore's Law is becoming increasingly irrelevant as even the fastest CPUs, like the Ryzen 9800X3D, struggle to meet the performance demands of the RTX 5090, creating bottlenecks. Major semiconductor manufacturers like TSMC and Intel must shift their R&D efforts toward next-generation materials, such as graphene or carbon nanotubes, which offer vastly superior electrical properties over silicon. Adopting these materials could eliminate the reliance on technologies like DLSS 4 Frame Generation and its "fake frames," enabling performance to stem from raw computational power and rasterization rather than compensating for poor optimization with artificial solutions.
