Nice informative video. I've never heard of the YP-40 before. However, true is that YAMAHA's 1981/'82 FM test balloons, GS1 & GS2, are their very first digital pianos. Starting from the wooden keybed to the sounds themselves, not to mention the legendary anaogue ensemble effect. Nothing was held back, neither electronically nor in terms of sound design & their massive lowend audio-wise is in the analogue realm.

The bit of research I did suggested they are "synthesizers" as opposed to digital pianos. You could load in new sounds via ext cards, and you could mix two sounds together, but you couldn't futz with the tones directly (filter/waveforms/etc) so... is that synthesis? I tend to think you're right and they're more like home keyboards/digital pianos (albeit expensive pro ones that are really nice to play).

@@davidblumenstein9868! When I bought GS2 last August and asked another owner what GS actually stood for, he said possibly for "Generative Synth". My research with Yamaha revealed that they were listed as Combo Keyboards, therefore as live instruments, like early 80's performances/recordings by Toto, Michael W. Smith, Dire Straits a. s. f. (& in Germany the band Spliff, NENA (studio only), Herbert Grönemeyer,etc...) shew. My copy is relatively worn out from live use, but it at least works. According to the previous owner, it's supposedly from H. Grönemeyer, who's cult in Germany. In '84/'85 it was his main stage "piano". The magnetic strips for loading sounds are a test of patience because there's only a 16 memo slot but countless strips with great sounds especially pads, keys, pianos & bells. Cool are the 3 band EQ, the detune knob is highly appreciated, and of course vibrato & tremolo controls. Rightafter I had the opportunity to grab a CE25 (Combo Ensemble). That lightweight only sounds softer but not a bit worse than GS-series. It's very expressive with many faders for various sensitivities. The famous Ens FX can even be mixed. It's affordable and Preset 6 shows any analogsynth/string machine what the truth is. KZbin vids don't do the CE25 justice. What you say about Yamaha vintage organs and that they unfairly gathering dust is so true. Once they were flagships now they got sold in extreme cases for € 100,-. On the Austrian version of Craig's list there's an advertisement of a supposedly YAMAHA HS-7 that even has a fully programmable TX81z onboard & again the price had to be reduced because no one seems to be interested. Or the FM king itself HX1 with even vel. & pressure sensitive pedal board is offered for rdiculous € 600-780. Back in the days that was the epitome of what's possible when money didn't matter. 😐

If it has a headphone socket then it can be run through effects modules & amps to create unique sounds , those old electronic keyboards are gold . . the traditional old pianos are hard to give away due to weight & size & some of the large upright electronic pianos can be separated from their surrounds & be left with a more handy just keyboard bit

Yep, this one has a similar design to current digital pianos in that the legs are easily removed and it can sit on some other desk/table. Better be a big one, though

I've never heard of or seen one before but I am impressed by this instrument. Certainly the tones don't exactly match all their descriptions but even so, they are all usable and at the very least, pleasant. The harp is superb. Many thanks for demonstrating this excellent vintage instrument. I really enjoyed the video.

I also have a Yamaha YP-40 and I love it, the weighted keys are great, and it has very pleasant e-piano sounds. The last and greatest hungarian Yamaha keyboard specialist lives near my home, and he did a little restoration a few years ago, changed some loose keys and it works perfectly. By the way, Kenton (UK) used to make an easy-to -install MIDI retrofit for the YP-40, but unfortunately not anymore. But if you check out this video... kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGfLoX1qe71kZ6s

This thing has no DCB or CV out ports, so it'd be a job to do that. Worth it if you already have one though!

Yeah, they are. I tested it out alongside a recent Yamaha DGX-6xx and an Ensoniq TS-12 and didn't feel it was inferior to those (and it was quieter/less clunky).

Good God ..... I remember having one of these at a high school I worked at back in the day .... And how Useless it was .. everything on it sounded like Crap ..... Not as bad as an RMI ....( Remember Those ) .... I mean what a suck time for the electric piano. At least until Yamaha actually made the little 2 Ton Little electric grand..... Whew !!!😂😂
