I saw the Yardbirds LIVE about 6 months earlier in LaPorte ,Indiana ,USA with Jimmy and Jeff Beck (R.I.P.). Jeff left the group after the U.S. Tour. I was taking a break during their gig at the National Guard Armory ,outside, when Pagey came out and asked me for a "stick", cigarette. I was smoking Kool menthols ,which he said were his favorite .Lent him a smoke and we chatted a while and then he went back inside to do another set. They were amazing and I could stand 6 feet from Pagey while he and Jeff did their dueling guitar work. Jeff got pissed at his guitar rig and slammed his guitar into his speaker cab. The dance only cost about $1.50 to get in and got our hand stamped . I have had an amazing life since and saw Pagey live with Zeppelin too ,in 1975 at Long Beach Arena, soon after my woman and I hitch hiked from here in north Indiana to southern California with 50 dollars, a suit case, and duffel bag. I am 74 today.. The Zeppelin tickets were only $10.50 each and they played for 3 hours and 20 minutes. It was Heaven and I got to hear early "Kashmir" since the album was released before the gig. From a guitarist/historian's perspective, this is actually an incredible piece of footage. If I'm seeing right, JP is playing his legendary Telecaster that he would've acquired about a year before this performance from Jeff Beck. For those who don't know, this telecaster would go on to record the entirety of Zep I, as well as the timeless solo on "Stairway to Heaven". Jimmy heavily modified this guitar over the late 60's, as it appeared in multiple forms throughout his early career with the Yardbirds, and then subsequently in Led Zeppelin. Based off the dates and appearances here, this concert would prove to be a transitional period for this guitar, as this would be post-circular reflective mirrors, but pre-dragon paint, plus it still retains its original white finish. The pick-guard looks to already have its reflective surface underneath it, clearly setting the stage for what would be more creative inspiration for JP to strip the finish and paint the dragon. Starting at 10:40 we get a wonderful close-up view of the guitar, reflective pick-guard, sans-mirrors. Very few photos/videos exist of the mirrored-version of the guitar, I'm not sure I've ever seen photo/video evidence of the transitional era between mirrors and dragon artwork. This, to me, is quite profound. We're witnessing arguably the most legendary, recognizable guitar, in its creative embryonic stages, preparing itself to become one with music history. Hope I'm not the only one that recognizes this.

The legendary Telecaster is playing here was used on the 1st Led Zeppelin but then Jimmy lent it to someone who Fd it up by making modifications and its mojo was basically ruined. It was not used in Stairway to Heaven

Historic....Vox, Ampeg, Tele (pre-mirrors), Gibson bass, raw, bad sound system, Keith appears to be hoarse, not singing lines, occasionally hitting notes fine, but not often enough...he only had one lung (operation when a teen), so must have been a tough one for him, but he was a trooper ....Page not loud enough, but enough to appreciate...McCarty cool on the skins...and they roll into a Dylan song....smile. This is a rock treasure...

The Tele is actually in it's post Mirror stage here. This configuration is the one he had for the shortest time. It went from all white with a white pickguard, to white with mirrors, to white with no mirrors and the reflective guard (as seen in this video) to the dragon paint job with the reflective pickguard. Side note, I think page never sounded better than when he played the tele. I love Zeppelin and what he did once he got the Les Paul but his playing style changed and I always preferred his yardbirds era and pre April '69 tone and playing to anything else he did

J’avoue que j’ai plaisir à les voir avec Jimmy Page à la guitare. Par contre, le son est pourri , par moment on entend trop la basse par rapport à la guitare. Beaucoup de problèmes techniques , Keith se plaint que le son de sa voix n’est pas assez fort. Keith chante pas terrible (son du micro mal réglé ?) j’ai lu dans certains commentaires qu’il est bourré ce qui m’étonnerait qu’à moitié. Il existe une vidéo tournée à Provins avec Beck à la guitare et Page à la basse.

Our guitarist had a Vox 12 string made in Italy in 1967. It actually had a soft snap on pad on the back to protect the chest while playing. Only time I saw such a thing. It was a bit heavier than a Fender, etc.

I think it was Pete Townsend who christened them Led Zeppelin, unintentionally, when he once famously and facetiously told Jimmy Page “You’re going to go over like a lead zeppelin”. I absolutely LOVED Shapes Of Things. A great studio recording. Keith Relf in this live performance is unbelievably bad, but Jimmy’s guitar is all there. I get the impression Keith was just a pretty face. I can’t recall ever seeing him perform well.

Relf was a decent vocalist and frontman in the Clapton and Beck eras, but not only did he have respiratory issues throughout his life, but had a drinking problem at the end of the Yardbirds (1966-68). After the Yardbirds broke up in '68, his vocal work became much better with Renaissance.

Keith Relf being drunk would not be a new thing. It was him being drunk and insulting the audience at a major university gig that prompted bassist/producer Paul Samwell-Smith to quit the band. Fortunately, Jeff Beck had invited his friend Jimmy Page to that gig, and Jimmy offered to take over bass duties. Also, Relf was an asthmatic who had breathing problems. One can assume that treatment in the 60s wasn't what it is today (i.e., inhalers etc.), so it is very possible he self-medicated with non medicinal meds of the day.

The camera editors seem to be a tad reluctant to show Jimmy playing. Not the first time I've noticed this from footage of this era. Still so glad to have this at all. Thanks for posting.

@alanosterman7130 *It seems, back then, lots of camera operators simply didn't know how to shoot a rock concert. The Bath Festival footage of Led Zeppelin is good, but no one recorded the music, they just filmed it. The Bath Festival clips are up here at YT.*

@@VladDImpala Yes, I think there are rumors that Jimmy Page (who just turned 80 yesterday), is working on the bath festival footage, and maybe syncing up the bootleg recording with the available footage, for a documentary. Hope so. Those camera men show too much of Bonzo's drumming, and then they cut to Robert's flashy boots too much. Then too much of the faces of the people watching them.

@@VladDImpala l often think some of them did not have a clue as to who was playing what,You often see a zoom in on a bass guitar when someone is playing the lead guitar solo on some of these 60,s concerts !

@@philipbrougham6360 *How true! I used to shoot concerts, so I know when and what to shoot. Concert photography, and filming concerts, is very much like sports photography, you have to know exactly what 'moment' is important to capture.*

He was of his time and was in very good company as Jeff Beck,Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix,Mike Bloomfield and Randy California also were active during 1967.

Page was of his time. What seemed “ahead of his time” was mostly taken from Beck’s previous treatment of these songs, without Beck’s inimitable touch ~

Listening to the Yardbirds live, everybody can see why Jimmy Page made Led Zeppelin by replacing all the members except himself.

He didn’t replace the members of the yardbirds, they quit. In fact Chris Dreja was going to remain the bass player for Led Zeppelin at first and jimmy page was fine with it til Chris decided to quit music at which point john paul jones joined.

They did some great songs though and their music was well before its time. Sometimes blues influenced, sometimes psychedelic, sometimes a mix. Keith Relf's singing sounds a bit flat here at times but they had technical problems too. Jeff Beck tells the story that the first time Jimmy Page came to see the Yardbirds, from the first line of the first song, Keith Relf fell over backwards into the drummer due to being drunk. Jeff Beck apologised to Jimmy Page for that but Jimmy thought it was great 'cool'.

Either way, Page was in a box in this band, but it must have been a formative experience. It's funny, next to the other guys he's already in 1969. The last man in probably didn't have much to say about the direction of a band that was flaming out. Still love the Yardbirds.

Many interpretations may be possible, and it is impossible and pointless to know now what the other members of the band besides Jimmy were thinking. But the truth is that it would have been impossible for the old members of the Yardbirds to perform the subsequent Led Zeppelin songs.

So frustrating at the age of 12, digging the rhythm of this jam , & trying to explain it to an older high school rocker , trying to impress them. But the only part you know is the chorus, “ captain morrow will i be bolder…. “ and even though on the show ‘Combat’ the sgt was played by Vic morrow, & he wasn’t a captain.just some constant scenarios dancing in my personal psyche since the 60’s. You tube has made it possible for me to lay rest another confusion of childhood ,a medium of sorts.yeah

There is a new live album from all the French appearances out. I bought it and it absolutely ROCKS. There's a few songs where Relf sounds a bit drunk....but hey, that's rock and roll. On the other side, the sound quality is fantastic along with the rest of the band's performance. IF you're a fairly serious Yardbirds fan, this new CD is a MUST. It's almost better than Page's release of "Yardbird's '68".....
