@alexvagias5295 Bowie did a version of it on his covers album Pinups, it's nowhere near as good as the original. It's great, but nowhere near this one.
@alexvagias5295Ай бұрын
@@davidwolstenholme6413 I didn't know that. Bowie probably over-produced it. Sometimes, songs have more energy when they first emerge, even though they're not technically developed. The new feeling/reality gets everyone juiced up. Bowie, the genius that he was, probably recognized the brilliance of that song and had to touch it, but, his studio savy may have taken away its primal edge. One thing I remember about this song, way back when, was how raw and primitive it sounded. It didn't sound like a high end recording. Then again, I had portable record player-very low quality. But, there was nothing like it at the time and it pulled me in. The amount of creative energy coming from English musicians in the mid/late 60's was overwhelming and almost incomprehensible. It was an incredible era for British rock.
@davidwolstenholme6413Ай бұрын
@alexvagias5295 it was, I just wish I'd been born ten years earlier than I was, I was born in 65, so if I'd been born in 55 I'd have seen it a bit more than I did. It must have been a great period to live through. Bowie's version is very like the original, but the solo isn't anywhere near as mind boggling as Jeff Beck's solo, the first time I heard it I was astonished, I had to listen to it several times!

I always liked this song as a kid (1980s), as my mom always listened to the "oldies station," but I didn't know who it was by until I was older. Then, in the late 2000s or early 2010s, that movie "Observe and Report" came out, about those mall security guards (I don't remember if it was before or after "Mall Cop," but both movies came out within the same time period...Anyhow, in "Observe and Report" the "veteran" mall security guard "Ronnie" took the newer security guard "under his wing" as his new "partner in crime" then there was a scene where this song started playing, as they were snorting coke, smoking weed and drinking. Then it shows them shining a lazer-pointer on random women's tits and asses, as they walked through the mall, and sneaking cell phone pictures of women in the changing rooms...then they saw some teens/20-somethings skateboarding in the parking lot...and it cuts to a scene where they're in a bathroom stall, and "Ronnie" says: "I'm not gonna lie to you...there's *nothing* good about this at all!" As he proceeds to inject heroin...then it's "back to work" as they attack the skateboarders in the parking lot, and they chase them down in a golf cart! That whole montage was brilliant, and this song went with it so perfectly! I forgot how to share links, as I'm old and "computer-retarded," but it's easy to find this scene on KZbin if you look up: "Observe and Report/Drug scene" They could not have picked a more perfect song!

What is so brilliant about "over under" and "heart full of soul" and "still I'm sad" etc etc etc was their genius at syncretism: a sonic potpourri and music goulash recipe of many gestures from past "airs" often historical and embedded in the culture, that strike an ancestral chord in people keen to such things: gregorian chant, or czech or roma gypsy riffs, or long ago brit folk tunes, and on and on. All the great rock groups did this, Who, Beatles, Stones (Paint it Black) and Cream, on and on. It's "Rock Around The Clock" on LSD 25, add some Ravi Shankar musical spice and social commentary, and a dash of the mojo blues, all in a speed of light and the blueprint that launched a 1,000 genres to create a lasting legacy: The Yardbirds are true revolutionaries!

My sisters and I shared a bedroom (and slept in bunk beds). They'd prefer to listen to the Four Seasons and "bubblegum". I had this song playing quietly on my transistor radio (hidden under my pillow) - while my poor sisters tried to sleep!

The electric sitar really turned this song inside out and upside down lol. It created, what is arguably considered, one of the best psychedelic groove jams in rock history.

I just watched the induction of the Yardbirds into the R&R Hall of Fame. When the Edge introduced them and they walked on-stage, the house band played Over, Under, Sideways, Down. I am 54 now and I don't remember hearing this tune in over 30 years!! I loved the Yardbirds when I was teen. The memories.

This is much better than The Beatles, you've got real musicians who were of the highest caliber making music. Not a recording engineer's top 40 studio band that fell flat live stage because all they knew was to strum,sing, and play simple structure songs.

You had them on 78? My collection is all 33s and 45s. Although, I do have them on cd now, to listen in the car. This will sooner or later become their favorite music, too. 😊🌻

2024........I'm 70,.......I was 13, when this song was a hit. 13 year old me, was trying to find old issues of Playboy magazine stashed in our neighbors, "lawn mower shed",....Puberty was in full bloom. Girls we're no longer icky, and dumb to us. Caught between wanting to grow up, and still liking to play with my slot cars and build plastic models. Trappings of the counter culture, were slowly seeping in,...with posters of psychedelic trips realized in swirling colors. I traded my nerdy black framed glasses in for a new set of wire framed granny glasses, inspired by The Beatle's, John Lennon. Bought my first pair of "flared leg" bellbottom pants, and a cool looking fringed leather vest. Our older brother's were introducing us to smoking "grass",....and "Turning on" & rebelling against our parents, unhip, old school, ways of thinking. Good times.

1966 was pivotal when pop divided in to rock. Jon Savage's book 1966 is a must read. By the end of that year it was soul, Motown and easy listening that dominated the charts
