In this video we're listening to The Yardbirds. We are familiar with a few of their songs, and we're eager to hear more from the band that spawned Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. What a legacy! Enjoy!

Having grown up decades before MTV, the visual fantasy that my mind conjures up whenever I hear this song (my absolute favorite Yardbirds song) leaves such an emotional hangover! Thank you for sharing this!

Even to this day I get chills from Jeff Beck's solo on Shapes of Things. And since my musical ear has never been in the same league I never realized until a few years ago the entire solo was played on the G-string. Very similar to my shock that Clapton's I'm So Glad solo on Fresh Cream was also entirely on the G-string. If only we had KZbin back in the 60s my group of H.S. freshmen might have won a few battle of the bands against our elders if my solos had been played better on these 2 songs and I was playing through a Les Paul and Marshall instead of a Goya Rangemaster, Ampeg Reverberocket 12 W cranked to 11 and a Gibson Fuzz. Hey, at least my Heart Full Of Soul sounded close. C'est La Vie!

Jeff Beck replaced Eric Clapton. They never played together in the Yardbirds. This was done with Jeffs lead guitar work. The solo was originally designed to be played with a Sitar but Jeff could play it better with his guitar. He played in the Yardbirds for 20 months, then Jimmy Page came into the band to join Jeff but Jimmy had to play on Bass for a while. For a short while Jeff and Jimmy played dual lead. Jeff left shortly after that leaving Jimmy to reconstuct the band into the New Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin in 1968. Jeff was the GOAT of electric guitar. RIP Jeff.😢 Neil from Sydney Australia

As you suggested, Jeff Beck’s guitar sonics were a revelation for the times, especially his solo here where he has a great attempt at sounding like a sitar.

Takes me back to about 10 or 11 years old, sneaking into my older brother's room to listen to his records (45s) on the stereo system when he was out of the house.

My own older Brother, 23 at the time, had given me his collection of 45's when I was 9 (in '79) and as you can imagine, I was totally stoked 😍 But it wasn't quite as exciting to me when he suddenly wanted them back nearly 20 years later! 😏 It was a great mix, too: Beatles, Kinks, Troggs, Dave Dee..., Traffic, Box Tops, Humble Pie, just to name a few 🙂

Thank you for the honest reaction and for taking the time to reflect on both music and lyrics linking past to the present Chris and Cynthia! I also like that you acknowledged Jeff Beck’s guitar solo. To me it sounds a bit like a cross between electric violin and a sitar. Although I like how the experimental drum playing here is a bit rough on the edges compared to the more technical playing of many drummers in the following decades, I can see why some perceive it as “clunky” :)

Jeff Beck re-recorded this song on Jeff Beck Group Truth album probably 1968. With the Rod Stewart vocal, and Beck bringing the guitar up, u can’t go wrong. Highly recommend this heavy (in the parlance of the times)version.
@shyshift
@shyshift Жыл бұрын
Yep the version on Jeff Beck-Truth is very different than The Yardbirds. It’s a much more sultry hard rock feel so Rod Stewart can use his incredibly soulful voice. The marching feel wouldn’t have worked for Rod.

Although both the Yardbirds original and Beck's fantastic reworking & performance are valuable historical documents, it is Gary Moore's rendition that I am most likely to choose for listening today... kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5TKeJeheJaVjqM May we all 'rest in peace' (& revelry!) when such events cannot be avoided. Here's a song by my 'most listened to' current band, "Rising" LIVE by Japanese band LOVEBITES: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ_GmmuBqb19hs0 in English, but the accurately added [cc] is helpful on first listen.

Wow guys, getting into the Yardbirds. Heart Full of Soul 1965 is one of my favourites. Recommend: Spencer Davis Group, I'm a Man 1967. The Who, I can't Explain 1965. Davy Jones and the Lower Third, Baby Loves That Way 1964. (Early David Bowie) We are the Mods!

At the time of Shapes of Things the lead guitar was Jeff Beck. He joined when Eric Clapton left. Later Jimmy Page joined and played with Jeff until Jeff left. This recording would have been the classic lineup of Keith Relf, Jimmy McCarty, Chris Dreja, Paul Samwell-Smith, and Jeff Beck. Paul liked to be in the booth overseeing the production so many of the recorded bass parts were played by session musician John Paul Jones.

@@hanierfamily ...and psych, garage rock, progressive rock, raga rock (Paul McCartney's guitar solo on the Beatles' 'Taxman' was heavily influenced by Beck's solo style on 'Shaped of Things').... If you want to hear the birthplace of hard rock, listen to 'Beck's Bolero'. Recorded in May '66 as a one-off side project for Jeff, it was not released until '67 as the B-side of his debut solo single, 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' (a regretable mis-step despite being a hit in '67 and again in the early '70), then on the debut Jeff Beck Group album 'Truth', which also includes a great half-time heavy version of 'Shapes of Things'. Had the tune been released in early '66 it would have pre-empted the heaviness that would follow later that year with the debuts of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. There is no denying that Jeff's riffing in it with the rumbling bass and thundering drums was heavy beyond anything else at the time (the Kinks' early hits and the Beatles' 'Paperback Writer' were heading in the direction of heavy but didn't attain the tipping point 'Beck's Bolero' did). That recording was produced by Jimmy Page (in addition to being a session guitarist he did producing) who co-penned the track with Jeff (though Page took sole credit) and played rhythm, with Keith Moon drumming, John Paul Jones on bass (John Entwistle bowed out at the last minute) and Nicky Hopkins (session great with everyone and later in the Jeff Beck Group). The lads were so impressed with themselves that they considered forming a band, but Moon and Entwistle, who wanted out of the Who, back out. But Page and Beck both identified what could be done with a powerhouse rhythm section, which led to the Jeff Beck Group and Led Zeppelin, the latter's name coming from a comment by Entwistle that the band on 'Beck's Bolero' would 'go down like a lead balloon in America' (i.e., it was die a rapid death). Page later changed 'lead' to 'led' for clarity and 'balloon' to 'zeppelin'. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ6yYYKQeJt8nM0

As regards the comments about the drumming, I think drummer Jim McCarty was trying to introduce a military parade-type subtext into the drumming due to the anti-war theme while at the same time rocking the heavy parts. The recording arts were not as advanced then in general, definitely in the case of the trap drums. I like the bolero beat in the verses myself.

Shapes of Things is one of the incredible songs ever written. It is still ahead of its time, and to think that Jeff Beck created and performed this solo in late 1965! Wow! This is truly the Yardbirds at their peak. I don't think these two can even grasp the significance of this song! This song is what made me want to play guitar! I think they would be better off reviewing Freddy and the Dreamers or the Bay City Rollers. Sorry : (

Being a child of the 60's, I recall that the big fear being propagated at the time was more nuclear war and it is to this that I think this song tips it's hat , the reference to desert lands being the result of nuclear fallout. By the way the climate science consensus back in the 60's was that we were heading for a new ice age, a decade or two later they had done a complete 180.
