The year ahead: IIED annual review 2021

IIED’s director Andrew Norton reflects on 2021 and takes a strategic look at how 2022 is shaping up.

Taking stock of 2021, Norton says it's been sobering to see the extent of the
failure of the rich world to show solidarity with low-income countries - from climate justice to vaccine justice.
He documents the role IIED has played to outline a route map for transformative urban recovery and highlight the amazing role played by local organisations in protecting livelihoods and health, and providing mutual support at the height of the pandemic.
Looking ahead, he says so much still needs to be done. Global climate action is falling short in many areas, mitigation is nowhere near where it needs to be, and the world's biggest emitters need to step up with new commitments and new action plans before COP27.
