Who would have thought that moving boxes would have such a rich history

I love it when I make a realization about Japanese when watching your videos, Soukoban is Warehouse Keeper! I just made the connection between it and rusuban, up to this point I thought it was like "warehouse number" - thanks for this :) For what it's worth, my first Soukoban game was on the Amiga, it worked in the operating system so when my Amiga was busy doing something e.g copying a lot of files, I'd crack it out in a little window and waste away the time. These days it has zero appeal to me as a game, it was purely associated with biding my time back then. And I like generally simple puzzle games like Shanghai, I can play that happily for a long time on my GameBoy.

Certainly followed the same path as Heiankyo Alien. Japanese computer games that got ported to multiple systems across the globe.

I don't know why, but I'm highly amused by "Tears of the Warehouse Keeper" as a subtitle. It feels like a call to unionization. Also makes me think of Fantasy Zone II.

Echoing what's been said already, nice to see Baba Is You get a mention. I have a place in my heart for original Sokoban, but Baba Is You takes it to a whole new level. One of my favorite puzzle games of all time.

Sokoban is a type of genre name you will be all too familiar with ONLY if you're pretty interested in Japanese games. It's funny, because they're ubiquitous as a simple game that works on pretty much anything with a display but they're never mentioned. I didn't even know the genre had a name until recently. I think as a browser game staple, we've all played our fair share of Sokoban but under many different names and evolutions (Does anyone remember bloxorz?). Truly a workhorse genre.

Sokoban is great...one of the classics for sure

Tears of the Warehouse Keeper is a fantastic name for a game! I knew about the Sokoban games, but didn't realize they were the genesis point for block-pushing games, very neat.

Wasn't expecting to see Rnd recommend Baba Is You and Stephen's Sausage Roll in the same episode. Excellent taste.

I think I first encountered this one on a system called NovaNET/PLATO? I thought it was neat and did get around to emulating the FDS version. always had a soft spot for this one, though yeah I usually get stuck in later rounds.

9:23 if Baba came out in the 90’s it would do for the block pushing puzzle genre like Doom did for the FPS. E: snakebird is another “complex gameplay arising out of simple rules” game like Stephen’s sausage

I think even if I enjoyed Sokoban I would go insane listening to that music on a loop going through the 150 levels. It really makes you appreciate how good the music in something like Tetris or Dr. Mario is.

I first encountered soukobon on my kid’s toy digital camera 😂 it’s fun! I got this disk in a lot, I’ll have to give it a whirl now

The power up thing reminds me of how mobile ports of many games add extras you can pay for today. I remember that the mobile version of Blokus had power ups and my brother chided me for not using them.

I always liked the Adventures of Lolo/Eggerland series so I thought I'd enjoy the Soukoban games. But I missed the action, turning enemies into eggs, and shooting mechanics. I've beat all the Eggerland/Lolo games except the PC game, which I could never get to work on modern systems. But never got more than about 25 levels into a Soukoban game, before getting board. Someday I keep telling myself I'll try to beat one of its games also. I really want Hal/Nintendo to release a complete Eggerland/Lolo collection, with all the MSX, Fami, Disk, NES, GB, PC, games.

I've been able to play the Windows Eggerland in compatibility mode, except I have to turn the music off to keep it from crashing after a few track changes, so you might need a virtual machine to hear all the tunes.

Sokoban wouldn't be that difficult to implement as a physical puzzle with pieces that could be rearranged and a big book of puzzles like those traffic jam puzzles that used to be a thing. I'm not sure Sokoban, on a fundamental level, can even be called a video game, in that sense. Eggerland/Lolo is very, very definitely a video game.
@TearyEyesAndersonReacts3 ай бұрын
@@EriChanTheRetroGamerNerd I like to think of Soukoban as the next level up from those scrambled images painted on squares of 8x8 and so on. Instead of moving the pieces in small loops to get them into the correct position. While Soukoban the other squares have been removed and you have a destination they have to reach. The next level up is the Eggerland/Lolo and things like Bombuzal.

People be asking “where is [blank game] port for Switch?” And I’m here like “where is Sokoban port for Xbox?”

Ah yes, pushing block puzzles... I had a shareware CD that had like a dozen of games like this, mostly from Soleau Software.

Up to this point, this is the best Sokoban. Of course, each one kept getting a little better than the last, but there's quite a lot of interesting things about this port! Personally, my favorite version is still the two Game Boy games. This is the kind of game that feels better to play while out and about or just lying in bed. For Sokoban-style... for me, nothing beats Quirk.

I recall playing Soukoban many years ago as it was one of the many games learned on my ICT class, and it wasn't really that fun. I also had a couple of Chinese cell phones that had Soukoban as their default game which were pretty much unfun to play.

Looks like a pretty nice Sokoban game. And also Baba is You is a meme game (and a dead meme already), far from a proper replacement.

Who has the authority to permanently label things "memes"? Why can't memes live forever?

@@BagOfMagicFood It's all up to me. Baba is You is a dead meme, the decision is final.
@victorvandermilte585711 ай бұрын
Baba is You is overrated. It starts out fun but quickly the puzzles stop being about spatial awareness and creative problem solving and more about trying to interpret how the engine works. Constantly throughout the game you have to think "how is this combination of words going to behave?", which might not SOUND unfun until you realize that it is all arbitrary and requires lots of experimentation to discover the rules for new words. I'd much rather have fewer words with predictable behaviors making up dense puzzles than sparse puzzles dependent on specific edge cases for interactions of new words every level.
