I did similar in 2008/2009. I had a long history of cycling but mainly only commuting and touring rather than racing. I trained up to do a long challenge cycle ride (225km/4500m) in 2008. I then decided on the BGR after reading Feet in the Clouds on holiday in the Lakes. I starting running for first time since school in October 2008 aged 42. Ran a half marathon in January and did the Fellsman in April. I completed the BGR in July 2009 in 22 hours 20 mins (a remarkably similar time!) with the help of Steve Birkinshaw and others. I've been running ever since except for short periods off with a broken leg and sciatica / back pain. Strangely I stopped running when I was at school because of knee pain.

Well done to Ian. There are things in life that can easily create apathy and or defeat but he showed us here that it's all a state of mind. Good going. Mark

@@streemer1 its very inspiring, i am training to walk 35 miles in a Day, but thinking of taking up running after many many years, my training for the last week was, Sunday walking 26.5 miles, monday cycling 8 miles, Tuesday walking 6 miles with a backpack weighing 15 pound, wednesday walking 6 miles with a backpack weighing 15 pounds, thursday cycling 13 miles, friday cycling 14 miles, and Saturday walking 18.5 miles, going walking today sunday not sure how far yet, i am 60years old, is this a reasonable level of fitness as i am unsure, i have a pair of trail shoes salomon, which i have had for the past 2 years, i got them from the PDSA where i did voluntary work, your feedback would be really useful. Kind regards!

Palmer my man. You have truly inspired.....others, not me!! It makes XC racing look like a gentle stroll in the woods. Now, stop that running nonsense and come back to two wheels.
