My mate and I are both massive fans of both series and have worked together for the last 30 years and on a weekly basis we are able to use at least one of the lines from The Young Ones as part of the day to day conversation. Normally in response to something someone says. It’s puerile and most of the time no one has a fucking clue what we’re on about but it keeps us amused. “Hands up who likes me?” Is a particular favourite of ours

@@WhoAreYou-.-. It was a way of getting the show classed as a variety show rather than as a sitcom, so they could secure a larger budget from the BBC. All but one episode featured a musical act. The remaining episode (Series 1 Episode 6, "Flood") featured a lion tamer whose presence was part of the episode's story.

I truly think this is their funniest episode. Nasty and Sick and Summer Holiday are great, but nothing falls flat in this episode.

Sick is one of my favorites too. I apologize for not getting more up yet

I always loved seeing how much damage Rick was willing to sustain for each episode. He not only took the major hits, but also did the experimental explosions and falls.

When swapping the characters they basically moved everyone up by a notch which made Mike, who's status as "the cool guy" is really only made possible by the level of his flatmates, drop to the bottom. Vyvyan usually takes the second place through sheer violence, (P)rick should by all accounts be the lowest in the picking order but Neil is just too depressed and down trodden to care. Also I know they had the budget and the manpower for the most outrageous props for the smallest gag and blowing up their sets but having an actual elephant in the studio interacting with actors? That's amazing!

This was the first episode I saw. I was blown away and hooked after the first 5 minutes. A friend brought a video back from the UK to Australia, a while before it was on TV here. I took it around to show virtually everyone I knew, and made them watch it. :-) It's an obvious thing to say, but it was totally unlike anything I'd seen before; it was like a bolt of lightening! We'd come off the mostly schmaltzy U.S. stuff to this -- wow!! Ok, some of the US sitcoms from that time were good, such as Cheers, some of Newhart, and a couple of others, but they were nothing like The Young Ones. I mean, I'd come straight from seeing MASH, Cheers, Cosby and Family Ties to this. Crikey! :-)
