Me an my boyfriend had been dating for almost a year in our first christmas together (our aniversary is on the 28th of december), so i gave him a hand painted mdf box, rpg themed, were he could store all his sets of dice, and a new set. So for anyone thinking about what the "appropriate" gift for the first christmas, it really depends on the time you know each other, what are their interests, and what you would like to gift them! I really like making thing by hand, so it was my to go, but something you can buy, but you know they will really like, is great too!

Christmas is just a solstice celebration in disguise… and the solstice, although it is significant to many religions around the world, is also just an astrological event that marks a important point in the year (the shortest day) and you can choose to celebrate it in whatever way you like. That is how I personally justify going all out for Christmas even though I am not and have never been Christian.

I feel like the phrase "Church over State" is a very American thing, because it rhetorically deflects attention away from much stricter theocracies in the world. Even though our politicians use church congregations affect the government, there a theocracies where being out is literally illegal (in one case, FIFA prohibited athletes from specifically addressing that rights issue). I even heard from a friend living in Israel that evangelism has been federally banned, and I wondered if it had been so trict that ut blocked any music from the gospel genre.
@stevie Жыл бұрын
Sorry if you misheard, but it’s “Separation of Church and State” meaning they are separate entities that can not infringe upon eachother. So, churches can’t be taxed in the USA, and schools can’t make children talk about Jesus.
@kencoleman5007 Жыл бұрын
@@stevie That's what I mean. "Separation between church and state" is usually spoken of in the context a legislature created so much in the image of religious doctrine. The term for it is "theocracy". In many ways, it's about the wording, and what it implies. When you look at more strict examples of theocracy, you can take Morocco and the UAE as examples. Both are legislatively constructed in adherence to Sharia, but the UAE is more strict in how closely the laws are in adherence. No joke, LGBTQ relationships involve more severe sentences in the UAE. Both countries however are about equal in being "dry" states. Living in Dubai is at least better on Lohan's liver. Standing up to those strict laws are more often not out of Islamophobic intent, but a poorly worded stance against strict theocracy. You can disagree with some interpretations of Sharia without being Islamophobic, just as you can disagree with some interpretations of the Talmud and not be antisemitic, and that you disagree with some of Christian doctrine without being anti-Christian. Speaking as a lapsed Catholic who's gotten really into esoterica. The more that I physically look less cisgender, the more that fundamentalists want to speak with me about Jesus (I work in a "blue state" public hospital with so many bibles and hymn books that you'd think it was run by the Gideons). So when people start getting particularly Evangelical, I openly display what I learned as a closeted Catholic teen, coupled with lightworker learnings, crystals, card divination, mandalas, meditation, mantras, astrology, and manifestation (with all sinceritty). 7 times out of 10, that leaves the Evangelist frantically trying to find their way back to their planned script, and other times are usually met with some sucking on teeth, and "I'll pray for you.", and my replying "You're too kind. I'll pray for you too!".
@kencoleman5007 Жыл бұрын
@@stevie What I meant about the phrase "church over state" also speaks of the relative privilege that Americans live in. Where we have a problem with children merely learning about spirituality in school is seen as problematic than may boys and girls studying separately, teachers scarily teaching of damnation, abd corporal punishment. I went to 13 years of Catholic school, and many of those teachers couldn't follow their own teachings in practice.
@kencoleman5007 Жыл бұрын
@@stevie There was a great episode of "Any Day Now" (an old Lifetime drama starring Annie Potts and Loraine Toussaint in an Alabama setting). It paired "church over state" with "witch trials" in a way that showed even the lrotagonists to be hypocritical. In a public school, a beloved teacher was a witch, and at one point, she gave a student a crystal to help him do well in school. While the PTA was all to accepting of school children learning to be "good little Christians", they wanted the teacher fired for being just as open about her faith.

Christmas is so commercialized though that it has been the hardest. It’s her third Christmas and explaining it her the same way with more age appropriate language has been helpful. Though, i’m currently pregnant and so she thinks baby Jesus might actually be her new sibling, haha. That’s been a fun time.

I refuse to let nazi arseholes steal a word that has been used for centuries. They've already done too much harm. Nazis spoke German, are you suggesting that nobody speak German now? Nazis wore uniforms, should uniforms be banned?
@JessicaLescarbeault Жыл бұрын
They called it that because that's what it's always been called... They just wanted to replace the Christian festivities with the old ones that existed prior to Christianity. It was not something made up by the Nazis. Thery were just trying to bring it back to replace Christian Holidays. In some places, it's still called that, with or without religion involved. It is not a bad word in itself. The word and the idea were not invented by the Nazis so when referring to Yule, we're definitely not reffering to that. (I get that that would be uncomfortable if someone was trying to bring back a Nazi Holiday, but it is not the case, it's the other way around.)
