I used this on set this past weekend and it produced some crazy hum and noise floor. I couldn't even use the audio. I have no idea what happened. I was using 32 bit float, etc.
@MichaelScrip4 жыл бұрын
I went with the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II since the Zoom F6 was delayed last year. But yes... 32-bit Float is a lifesaver! I am a one-man video shooter and I usually leave the recorder plugged into a mixing board backstage. I will always do a sound-check... but it's one less thing I have to worry about in case something goes wrong. It's amazing to be able to adjust audio levels afterwards.

I've been really insecure just "setting and forgetting" since I'm so passionate about audio - but I forced myself to as a way to backup what I've said in this video and man... literally... it's amazing.

Great video. So nice to see fellow KZbinrs that believe in getting to the point! The irony of recording a distorted guitar to show how you can recover distorted audio is not lost either! Fantastic. I just ordered my F6. Keep up the great work!

@@OliverJHughes Looks like a golden strat -ish something back there on your wall. I get comments from time to time on a reissue thinline tele I have hanging in my studio that makes it into my videos from time to time. If you're ever in Atlanta, beers are on me. F6 just showed up. Good grief, it's tiny, like a toy. Like a tiny little toy. Without consulting the manual I was able to use it as an interface on my Macbook Pro. Logic Pro X seems to like it - 2.8ms output latency, and just under 7ms roundtrip! Preamps sound as good as any I've messed with. Look like my Presonus Quantum 2626 is going up for sale. It's good, but its only a smidge (sorry for the technical terms) faster and probably 10x the size/weight! Thanks again for the no-nonsense info rundown and the swell review. Rave on.

Alright yep I think I blew mine out. Plugged into a DJ’s line out thru the speaker and all I hear is distorted loud audio, sounding like I blew something out..... Did you mention I have to change a setting in order to avoid that? Where is turning on ‘line level’ in the menu that you’re referring to in the video?

Mixpre3ii also has 32bit float, a little bit more dynamic range, better headphone output. Zoom f6 has better batterylife, better app.

Great video. I share your enthusiasm and I haven't got one (yet.........) I have been researching Zooms H5 and H6. Although they are great machines, neither have 32 bit float which is clearly the way forward and that doesn't make them very future proof. I wonder who will be the first to get a handheld recorder with XLR inputs and 32 bit processing? - On that train of thought, if they can be retailed at around half the price of the F6, overnight all the current machines that don't have it will become Dinosaurs.

good beard, good review! no clipping. instant buy for me. always have to watch that aggressively on my zoom H2N. plus when you put the windscreen cover on the H2N the screen that shows when your clipping gets covered. I hate that, since I field record.

Very good video thank you. I was watching another video about the Zoom 6, and they said there is a problem with the line out being noisy with poor sound when connected to the Panasonic or Sony camera microphone input. Did you come across this also?
@PlacesToVisit4 жыл бұрын
Zoom said they solved a line out noise issue with firmware 1.5. I do know own the F6 (Wish I did) so I’m not able to test it.

thanks for this. can i use the zoom f6 or the mixpre-3 ii with the rode video mic pro + via the 3.5 jack? are there limitations to this quality wise compared to using a xlr shotgun mic? thanks so much for your thoughts.
@OliverJHughes4 жыл бұрын
I can't speak to the mixpre3, but the F6 only has XLR inputs, so unless you had a 3.5mm to male XLR adapter, the Videomic wouldn't connect. As far as quality - hard to say, it's very dependent on the whole chain. I know you'll have more self-noise from a videomic vs a true shotgun mic that required 48v of phantom power, for example.
@JohnMark613554 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. Does the “unclippability” and the other excellent recording functions work if the recorder was used just as a preamp? In other words, I would use it to as a through device into my multitrack recorder. Thank you.
@OliverJHughes4 жыл бұрын
Well that’s a bit tricky since the “clipped” signal sounds clipped in the recorder - because it technically is ... but the 32 bit float allows you to pull it back to clean in post. So if you were to record it to another recorder, and it clipped in that signal chain, you’d be stuck with the clipped signal.
@JohnMark613554 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response. I would be using the Line Out from the F6 into my multi-track recorder. Is the sound coming out clipped, or does the 32bit technology cause me only to hear the processed, unclipped, sound? I appreciate your help.
@OliverJHughes4 жыл бұрын
It will definitely sound clipped in the recorder if it’s redlining - but if you record it with the F6 you’ll be okay. Passing the clipped signal along will make it permanently clipped (I assume!)
