I remember when I was playing through this DLC and heard from a certain image board that he was streaming. Contrary to what I probably should have done, I put down a message for an illusory wall (a real one) that would help people bypass one of the harder parts of the area. When I hopped on Twitch (with ad blockers, of course) to see if he would do a little better, as a fellow Dark Souls player. I actually saw the exact place where I put my message. Fidgeting with excitement at the possibility of the fat rolling human cesspool possibly purging some swamp matter from his being, I waited patiently for him to take a fucking hint and learn something. He walked right past the message and decided to get killed over and over instead. It was a very exciting day.

The fight against Smelter 2.0 is so great. He never learns to avoid his overhead strike. He just doesn't get the timing right because of that little delay before the attack. Phil has played through DS1, DeS and DS2 at this point and still doesn't understand that every action in DS can be qued. For an example, if a character swings their weapon and during the swing presses whatever button to iniate a healing item, that action is qued and will happen once the first action is done. Phil absolutely amazes me at how he can claim to be good at games if he wants to and yet when games give him all the time in world to learn the mechanics, he skips over them and later on, complains about how the game never explained how to perform that one thing he needed to do in order to progress. Sorry for the rant-ish comment but it has annoyed me for far too long.

I LOVE how he takes credit for the lightning spear nerf. The whole time he acts like it was all because of him and his "overpowered" build that they patched it. It had nothing to do with him, Fromsoft and several players felt it was a little boring to have a huge amount of faith and a crap-ton of lightening spears, not to mention it was only really effective in PvE anyway.

The damage nerf was acceptable. The availability nerf was not however. Should've made scaling the same as soul sorceries so that only dedicated faith users can get a lot of use out of them. DS2 is a really broken game anyway pvp-wise with a lot of things that make 0 sense. I can see why some shit like backstabs and resistance stacking were nerfed to absolute garbage in DS3 and they should stay that way.

Re-watching this. Seriously, how can anyone get mad at Fume Knight? I understand the general frustration of getting one's ass kicked by him, he's statistically the hardest boss in the game, but I also think he's the most fair. He has a reactive but clear move set, telegraphs his attacks, bonfire right next to the fight, no cheap gimmicks. It's really a battle of skill where you have to get your observation and timing down or he'll punish you. On my first character I died so many times but never got mad. He's like the ultimate "Git Gud" boss who taught me so much that on my second character I decided to go 100% shieldless playthrough and had an absolute blast. And here we have Phil going: "Stupid cheap nonsense!" DS2 has some shortcomings yeah but Fume Knight definitely isn't one of them, he's like the very essence of Dark Souls.

It's insane that after hundreds of hours he still doesn't realize that dark souls has an action queue system. Mashing buttons is a bad idea. Also, he's playing this DLC after at least 100 hours so how is he still so bad at rolling? He's bad at the timing (rolling when he sees the tell rather than the actual attack), he doesn't understand how rolling works (only a portion of the roll animation is invincible) and almost never rolls in the right direction (he rolls away too much which is bad vs many attacks and leaves him too far away to get a good punish).

The smelter demon is one of the hardest bosses in the game he's got a really surprising range and also he does fire damage when you're near him but it is easy when you have an all-around build try casting heavy great soul arrows and great soul arrows and give yourself always a distance between you and him to make him repeat the same attack again and again and he'll leave himself always open for you to caste three or two spells on him and do this process but watch out from his sword range he's got big range on that sword and try timing you Dodges cause if you miss time it he can sometimes one shot you and you'll be pissed as now and remember all the bosses give you signes on there attacks and how they will attack you just need to control them it may seem impossible for you but it's absolutely possible if you can give yourself a distance between you and every boss like the smelter demon and be patient very patient cause when the boss leaves you a open shot for you it's like Dark souls begs you to take it and it'll fuck you up if you take it always make the boss attacks first and then counter attack him and have fun the game is crazy good ❤️👍

But the Blue Smelter and his lead up are both extremely obnoxious and by in large the worst part of the dlc. His endless complaints about dodging "delays" and "not working" are so annoying... He's looked shit up before, like with Turk's ring, so why doesn't he look up about dodging? Your iFrames in DS2 are governed by your Agility level, which is mainly increased through Adaptability. Minimal Adaptability/Agility is 85, which only gives you 5 iFrames, which when running at 30fps, thats 1/6 of a second. If you are still rolling, but not in the iFrames, you still take damage (though it is only a fraction of the full damage). But FAR more importantly, it doesn't matter as much of *when* you dodge, but *WHERE* you dodge. In DS2 and DS1, enemies' attacks are slow and telegraphed well-before they are performed. These are signals to tell you *WHERE* to dodge. Watching 48:00, the Smelter Demon does a Vertical Slash to the floor. Phil rolls straight ahead (into the boss) and expects the dodge to work. Even if timed perfectly, you will not dodge *at all*. The game understands that this would not dodge the attack. Had Phil rolled to the left or right, he would have actually not taken any damage, because he would have rolled out of the hitbox. Phil does not seem to understand any of this. He continues to make this mistake in Dark Souls 1 & 3, Demon Souls and Bloodborne. Seriously, Phil, "git gud scrub". Edit: Oh yeah, he also seems to not understand that actions are queued. If you roll and then hit "Use Item" while still rolling, you will use your item at the end of the roll. That's basic shit most people don't need to look up, as they can figure that out after a few hours of play. But Phil has played all the FromSoftware SoulsBorne games, so I don't think he will be learning that any time soon.

man smelter demon really isnt even that hard of a boss his moveset is incredibly repetitive and simple. Literally the only reason he's dyin is because he is CLEARLY rollin the overhead too early. I managed to beat the original smelter demon on my first try just because of i-frames and a surplus of life-gems (which u can even use to mitigate his AoE damage btw). I'm just amazed that he has played DS2 for so long but still hasn't mentally adapted to the fact that the trackin is VERY strong in this game and you MUST time your rolls correctly or else you will take damage, and smelters hitbox isnt even THAT large if u just roll right. He's not very different from any of the other bosses in the game. Also there's an item he COULD be usin to help his survivability with fire resist buffs, or that one item that generally increases your defense temporarily, the boss gives you time for both of them throughout the fight.

He’s also carrying around a Greatshield with close to 100% Fire block yet he doesn’t try to block Smelter even friggin once.

Does Phil not know that Soul Vessels are a thing in this game? He could easily respec his character (I didn't watch his full playthrough but I am sure he stumbled on at least one Soul Vessel during the main campaign) into a tank with massive Vigor and Strength/Dex. It would probably be way easier for him, because he could get hit a bunch without dying.

I just don't get it. His stream chat constantly tells him what to do and where to go, he looks stuff up online all the time and he has gone many, many hours into every FromSoftware Soulsborne game... And he STILL doesn't understand how to dodge?! Or that actions are queued?! I legitimately think researchers should study this man. Seriously! There has to be something we can learn about the human mind's ability to learn and adapt to new situations.
