My father was a barber for over 50 years, with a break during the war while he fought overseas (though still cutting his fellow soldiers’ hair for cigarettes). His father and grandfather were also barbers, going back to at least the 1870s. It is a much misunderstood trade, requiring a lot of skill and patience. It also needs a sympathetic ear and a level of kindness. I remember as a child watching my father carry a legless veteran of the Great War up the steps and into his shop to give him a haircut and shave. He used to say that they stuck to the style they had when they had been young men, the Boer War veterans different from the Great War veterans, and the Second World War veterans like my father all requiring very different techniques and styles. I didn’t realize how many people he had touched until the day of his funeral. Keep at it and keep changing lives! Everyone deserves the chance to face the world with dignity.

Big Big props to your Father. I am a pacifist however I hold the greatest and highest respect for men and women who will be willing to fight and possibly give up their lives to protect people that they don't even know. My Father and uncles all fought in WW2. I have good friends that fought in Vietnam. I believe anything that a veteran needs should be provided. Everyone from the richest to the poorest person have been protected by these faceless heroes and heroines. I hope everyone that comes into your Father's shop knows that they are being serviced by a Great Man.
