Can't say enough about the 727. My first airline flight as a kid was in a Western Airlines 727, by myself, I was captivated by the sound, and the feeling of power. Worked on airplanes for 24 years, and 19 as an airline mechanic, for two airlines. The 727 was a beast, the JT8's could be a little cranky at times, but they were tough. Rocks in the front sand out the back, keep right on running, I'm exaggerating slightly, so take it easy. Solid airplane though. they came out of heavy check, and they flew and flew. Brakes, tires, and an occasional engine change, maybe a CSD and Generator here and there, APU once and a while, but they flew and flew. I'll take a 27 over any Airbus any day, because it won't tell you what's wrong with it , you have to figure it out for yourself, and it's a better built airplane than any Scudbus ever built. Knock the wings off, mount a cannon on it.......instant tank, and it made noise like an airplane should.

I know what you mean about a sad day. Next saturday, the 26 oct 2013, SAS Scandinavian Airlines last MD-80 aircraft will arrive at its base in Copenhagen and that will be the end of an era. So in a week i will have the same sad sad feeling that you had with the FedEx 727. Planes today, must not make noise, smoke or look beautiful. Planespotting for McDonnell-Douglas or Boeing classics is near the end and that why your video is a blessing. Nice work.

I spent 6 years flying the 72- great airplane! Very high Vne (redline) and reasonable approach speeds thanks to the remarkable wing design. It was a bit under powered by modern standards but it had wonderful handling characteristics and great stopping power on the runway. With a 757 nose and cockpit and new engines it would be a current contender, but it's been sidetracked by history. Glad I got my time on it!

My father worked in the airline industry Buford the hub and spoke set was started. I flew DC9-30 and 50 into airports that were made for small prop aircraft. The FAA had certified these air powers as able to handle the jet due to reverse thrust. But the most Fun was the different variations of the 727. A great aircraft from Boeing. Going from a DC-3. To an MD-80 from a 727-100 to the 727-200 to the DC-10(the biggest aircraft I flew in . all had there strange little quirks, each was fun to be in. The small DC9-10 was the finish to fly in as it could land in just about any airport and was a little power house. Yes it was only 4 seats across. But that was the cool thing about it.

I remember the day when the B-727/100 first came off the assembly line. It's a darn shame the newer engines of today couldn't be squeezed onto the 727. The design of the 727 was basically perfect and literally timeless, but her JT8D's were not. I've only ever really felt safe in a DC-9, MD-80, B-727 and a B-747, and I've outlived them all. I no longer have a favorite airplane.

I just checked this: www.airport-data.com/aircraft/N481FE.html, and found out that the very 727 shown here was built in 1978 (the same year this video says FedEx began operating them). And FedEx acquired the last 727s ever delivered (all freighters) off the assembly line in 1984. Sorry to sound like a jerk, but you mean to say that the most recently built 727s were retired before this one was? Anyway, one thing I remember really well about the FedEx 727 fleet was that my first time on a plane in 1979 was on one of these FedEx birds - when it flew for Air Canada. One sixth of the peak FedEx 727 fleet were acquired from Air Canada when they decided to replace them with Airbus 320s. I would have been proud and lucky to have attended this event if given the opportunity. Thanks for posting.
