very informative video. and yes, it is borderline pretentious how levi's has basically zero info on their website. don't they realize we like to know about what we're buying? as a denim head of almost 15 years, i have nothing against levi's, but at this point i'd rather give my money to the "mom and pop" jean brands. my top 3 favorite fits are rgt stantons, railcar spikes, and tellason sheffield.
@ryanr62402 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your website suggestions. Do selvedge jeans come hemmed? I imagine they come long so you either need to roll them or tailor them. I'm leaning toward the Tellason Elgin
@jeffrittenour82022 жыл бұрын
Elgin is a very nice fit. Yes, they will come with a hem. Selvedge denim jeans generally come long because most people want to cuff them, but there's no rule. I would suggest wearing them cuffed for a few months before you decide to hem them shorter.

Bought my first LVC pairs few days ago. 66’ 501 Rigid. Cone Mills. Bartack. Big E. A bit tapered. Since I don’t own a tub, I soak it with cold water for 25-30 mins. Shrinking a bit, but fit good on me. Truly a legendary pair from legendary brand.

Having owned both Uniqlo and LVC raw denim I can safely say that the LVC quality is lightyears ahead. I'm lucky if a pair from Uniqlo last a year of moderate wear without falling apart whereas the LVCs are still going strong today after being purchased in 2012 .They had 2 years of almost daily wear with minimal washes and get pulled out semi-regularly nowadays.

In the UK 2008 LVC 1947s were about £120-140. In 2010 they went up to £220 ish. The reason I was told of the increase was the cost of cotton had doubled, if not more. I'm guessing Levis just never readjusted the price to reflect the cost of cotton.
@richardcartwright5019 Жыл бұрын
man those were the day's when buying a pair of LVC meant you didn't have to sell a liver or remortgage your house. Sadly they will never go back to the £120 mark. I do remember before covid in 2019 they had a big LVC sale. Not seen that since 😢

Lots of very interesting info here, so thanks! My guess would be that the cost driver was most likely the profit margin they're looking for rather than production cost. I was disappointed that we all have to wait another week for the big announcement. They look great on you. Nice fit. Unless they’re uncofortrable, I wouldn’t sweat it. Now, you may have wanted longer legs to roll the jeans up, but you can still pull it off with this length. Me personally, I do not roll my cuffs, unless the jeans are too long. At least you have an excuse to buy another pair!

The wax marks would make them look more authentic, Back in the days when they were worn, most Levi's would have had candle wax on them, along with marks caused by embers from lighting the wood stove and ash marks from using them to stub cigarettes out. These days, people wear their Levi's for going out. Back then people changed into smarter pants and some trendy bars had a no jeans dress code. Here in the UK, no one would have worn jeans going out for a meal or to a nightclub. Wearing jeans for fashion was first associated with the USA, followed by France.

My oldest 501 (black) is from 1993 - and guess what? The fabric is still spot on, albeit serveral times of courses being repainted, recolored with black color, because you do know...the sun, uv and the color is fading...over time. But the quality back then was there, still. Not like the 70-80s...but still great. Nowadays ?!?! A 501? Nevermore that long lasting, ever. Fabrics are thin, and easily being ripped apart after some time...because it's very thin, compared to decades ago. Scheduled obsolescence, it is...sad, but true.
@dudewuttheheck3 жыл бұрын
What is sad is that these are not actually the most accurate reproduction of a Levi's 1947 501. Unfortunately for Levi's, there are Japanese brands that do actually make more accurate reproductions of older Levis with Conners Sewing Factory being the first that comes to mind.

Meh. If you ask me, the price is to justify LVC's marketing budget. Kaihara also supplies Uniqlo's selvedge denim and they are Japan's largest denim manufacturer. Cone Denim IS still around. The White Oak plant closed but the Cone Denim company (and looms) moved like a town or two away in NC and have been concentrating on making their own denim. If these were USA made and produced in smaller quantities, mayyybeeee they could justify $260? But, like you said, the selvedge market is so wide open right now with boutique manufacturers who will make you much better jeans for a much lower cost, I don't know who the market is for these? I actually have a pair of their White Oak jeans that I found in a thrift store a few years back and were no great shakes so I turned them into jorts. The ultimate insult!
@TheIronSnail3 жыл бұрын
A ruthless jort conversion! And yeah I agree on that 100% the more I learn and read it seems like Kaihara can just handle the volume. Plus yes! I deleted it for time but Vidalia mills is right around the corner! I was thinking they used the transition as a cost saver?

@@TheIronSnail It makes total sense that the largest denim brand in the west would source their denim from Japan's largest plant, but to act like this is somehow special when you can buy the same denim at Uniqlo for $60 is nuts! Speaking of price, i have LVC Studio Taper, made in japan, they has 284$ retail. And it still fraction of a price for some designer denim, or hi-end luxury brands. I have G-Star raw with retail of 430$ made in India of all places and it makes almost no sesnes, cuz "true luxurious Italian jeans" can be found at 500$ or less. So price is all over the place. They also, afaik, mark up at least 50% up from "real retail price". Aka it still profitable with 50% off, so they can sell it to other stores, and stores can sell them even with discount keeping the profit. Holy damn, my English is worse than usual today.

Actually, the Turkish textile industry is of premium quality, as it is advertised by many brands and is considered a premium quality. If you wanted to cut costs you wouldn't manufacture in Turkey, you would manufacture in Moldova, Romania, or god forbid south-east Asia or china.
@luceafarul5792 жыл бұрын
Why would you think made in China wouldn’t be premium quality? I think you simply don’t know much about what’s actually going on in places like China. If they manufactured the Jeans in one of China’s top economic cities the cost of labor is probably significantly higher than in Turkey. In fact if you ever worked in China in one of those cities you couldn’t even afford a house, they are so much more expensive than housing in USA. I’ve had clothes made in China of which labor costs higher than labor in the USA.

Do you think the painted archs could have been an inspiration for the brand Evisu? Do you plan to get the other Levi repos? That Sugar Cane denim peaked my interest, maybe I'm just bias towards because that Type 2 denim jacket that you persuaded me to get is the one of the bet jackets I own but I digress. Also, I think the next video with another 501 is, for you to marinate in a river for a day to see the shrinkage. lol

Hahahaha out at that last sentence And interesting with Evisu! I could 200% see that Also i do plan on getting more repos! The Sugar Cane Type II is an all star of a jacket so I’m excited to see what else they and other repro brands have!

I second this. I’m currently wearing an amazing pair of White Oak Cone Demin jeans by Bravestar that were about $80. Quality on par with the Naked and Famous pairs I own. Also, Uniqlo makes a great affordable selvedge jean

I just got a pair of samurai denim's "musashibo benkei" jeans, and they're heavily inspired by the wwii era levis including the painted on arcuates. I do wish they had they waist cinch though... I feel like it would help hold up these 25oz monsters.

I just bought a pair of Levi 501 selvage that’s made in Japan. I’m guessing made in Turkey just costs more. They could’ve just had it made in China but I think people may not buy them if that’s the case due to China having a bad rep (even though Turkey is definitely not a better country than China but most people don’t know anything about Turkey so there you go)

What I know is we don't have a good trade agreement with Japan not like Canada so naked and famous. So Japan and Canada work better and it's cheaper for them compared to us if we got the denim ship here and made here. So that's why Levi's gets the raw material ship it to an other country where it's cheaper to import and boom bam that's how it goes

I don't think they come in a 33" length. Levi's, like most other men's pants makers, usually only offer length sizes in two inch increments such as 30", 32", 34", etc.

I am confused. Is slub a type of animal? I can only assume its a hairy animal.....that is blue? Because what I gathered from this video. These pants are made from slub hair. Wait does cotton come from slubs? I thought cotton was a plant.............I have questions please answers.
@TheIronSnail3 жыл бұрын
Hahah I debated on explaining slub and nep in this vid but left it out! Slub is a piece in the yarn that is a different thickness than the rest of the yarn, it creates an uneven texture on the jeans because those thick threads are pop out of the weave more The hairy part of denim are thin pieces of cotton that aren’t in the weave! Think like a new flannel shirt texture. That’s usually taken off of mass produced pants by singeing! Cotton is a plant and these are made from cotton! I wish there were slub animals though...
