We learned after the towing the same way, that it is safer to stand on the rope on the footpeg. That way you can let go when you need to bail out of the towing if there is a problem. Sorry to see. Still haven't had to try it thankfully

Ahh mate, been watching all your stuff... a far cry from the riding here in England. Loved all the videos, but proper gutted for you Lance with the outcome of this one. But, with the help of your mate got to (some form of) civilisation, kept your head and come up with a plan. Well done mate, not easy when the pressure is on. I've been watching and enjoying the videos from both of you lads on this trip, but always knowing this video was coming since you posted the failure on the socials. As ADV riders, aside from getting hurt, our biggest worry is that a mechanical failure will leave us stranded somewhere so it's fortunate you had help nearby and on well made surfaces that made towing possible. Probably doesn't help but the good thing is that your bike is a simple machine with parts readily available. Look forward to seeing you back out there.

Sadly it's a very common thing with these... happened twice to me over the years and thankfully went straight through both times with no damage... Now running an aluminium billet slide which should hopefully never fail again... good luck with the repair and I hope the damage is minimal

Great take home message at the end. Stay positive. Had a similar experience, CBR1000RR from Sydney to Kakadu,NT. Rack broke 2,400kms from home. Had to ditch all my water, cloths etc. All I was left with was spare fuel strapped to the seat and rode home following the signs for Sydney.

Hi Lance I feel your frustration & pain, back in late 80’s I purchased a 1985 DR600 Dakar with 35000kms. I completely pulled it down powder coated the frame replaced everything that needed replacing & worn out. Rebuilt the top end & replaced the clutches as well, ( it would have been cheaper to buy a new one) but as we all know you gesso far you might as well keep going. Anyway on my second outing about a 400km loop from Penrith & half way travelling 80-90kms the bike started jerking & same time a crunching sound came from the engine as soon it happened it was over in seconds, the motor still running ok at 80-90k’s until I pulled the clutch in it was revving it head off at 4 grand. I straight away killed the engine & pulled over. Every thing looked fine on the outside I then kicked it over & it was still revving hard. I rode it home carefully, traffic lights were a challenge away way after inspecting the carby ( flat slide) I noticed a piece missing from the bottom corner, that went through the motor. Realising this I took the head off to check for damage to piston or valves, there was none to the piston I had the head checked out & I was lucky. I remember the slider wasn’t cheap, should have bought a new after market carby, I was in my early 20’s at the time. You find out the hard way aftermarket exhaust & air filter the jetting needs to be sorted as well. You wonder why the top end was lasting only 10,000 kms because it was running too lean after the second time it was sorted. At the end of the day flat slide carby’s do fail as they get old. I enjoy your enthusiasm and experience of all the non mechanical engineering but who’s willing to give it a crack, self taught mechanic get it done soon or later without the plug in machines

when I was in a situation of towing, was riding staggered with rear bike tow point is footpeg with your foot on tow rope can lift up foot if situation turns bad.. as you say if you let go of your handlebars think you are stuffed...great videos of both you and josh...

Wow mate, one thing the wife and I realised while travelling in South America and surrounds.....the worlds a good place and 99% of the people we met would do anything to help if needed and it sounds like you also found that here. I remember the front wheel bearings seized on the BMW in Argentina; we were in the middle of nowhere, a guy leaving town to go home, with ACDC blaring stopped, helped me throw the wheel in the car and drove me 35 km back to town where he organised to get it all fixed. In our broken spanish/ english he explained he played the piano in his local church and just liked ACDC. He then drove me back out (to wife and broken bike still sitting on the side of the road) where he waited till we were right to go then disappeared down the road to Thunder Struck! Great set of videos mate and I'm guessing you probably now know the full extent of the damage to the bike so I hope its all working out OK. David & Em

the vacuum release plate on the slide cracking on the fcr39mm pumper carbs is a known issue, it seems to be hit and miss if you'll ever have the problem but i think it's worth replacing it every 20k km as a precaution.

In my younger days I had a honda 360 twin road bike one of my mates had road trail Yamaha and it had no power when jump started it ran with out it it stoped so I hunted around and found some electrical wire I strung it from bike to bike and we rod from lightning ridge to Bondi junction side by side it was a bit of fun

I towed a mate 600+Km through France a couple of years ago. Broken crank on a 25 year old bike. It's not an adventure until something goes wrong!!...Footpeg to Footpeg is the best way to tow.

Hey Lance. The only way to eliminate these types of issues is to stay home on the couch. Dont be too critical of what you cant fix, that issue would never be fixed on the side of the road so in the end you did the same as a mechanic would of done. Many people dont understand the struggles and importance of freight and transport networks in the bush. Bus services are critical and thats how many people make it over to the coast for medical treatment. I took a new oil filter up the Hann highway 15 years ago. I was on my way up there in a ute and the bush telegraph got a message into Hughenden that there was a tour bus that had put a rock through an oil filter, luckily for them i was heading north and had called into the local mechanics for some stuff for the ppl i was visiting. When i got there there were 40 O/S exchange students hiding in the shade everywhere.

All is well that ends well. I see your comments re two trashed valves. As for towing, peg-to-peg. Some say stand on the rope but it does not matter too much. Right side of the power bike, left side of the dead bike. Being offset means you can see and you can move out of the dust and roost a bit (not be in the line of fire). You’re tow mate needs to be aware of ‘your line’ but can do pretty easily for long periods. Try it, you won’t go back to any other way.

in Qld I use RACQ ultra care where they will arrange transport accomadation and transport for you and your bike. I have found these trips where things go wrong are the ones that you remember and are great stories to tell and laugh at. Keep on riding.

Hi mate, I live in Sydney myself and and now 66 years old and was in the same situation as yourself ( but not in such a remote area ) in 1980 I bought a brand new BMW R80/7 and was on tour in with a mate in the Victorian Lakes Entrance area when we were on a back road and one of the bolts that hold the conrod onto the crankshaft snapped in two ( however obviously I didn't know what happened at the time, and it wasn't through any lack of engine oil ) and the bike locked up completely at around 95klms per hour and nearly threw me off the bike, long story short I had to leave the bike in a local garage and then I had to be doubled all the way back to Sydney as a pillion passenger on the back of my mates bike, some 1200klms ( not pleasant ) this ruined the road trip for both of us. All the way back home I was worried about my bike and also what had gone wrong? When I got back home I arranged for another week of work and hooked a borrowed trailer to my car and drove all the way back down to Victoria Lakes Entrance and put the bike in the back of the trailer and then all the way back to Sydney and dropped the bike of at Tom Byrne Motorcycles in Wentworth Street Sydney for repair, if there was any consolation in all of this I was never charged by BMW for any repair work. Wow you’ve hinted it dosent end well, damn. Do you think riding it the long distance’s at high revs caused the issue? Is putting a big bore kit in it going to fix that? Isn’t the gearing going to be the same? A bike towing a bike is a nightmare. Try it in the high country when your coping roost just so you can get up a hill lol. As a truck driver many companies don’t allow passengers, and if there’s stock in the trailers you can’t just put a bike in there with them. You also have the issue of trying to lift a 150kg bike up to 2 metres off the ground to load it as well. Glad you were able to make the calls to get yourself and the bike home. Looking forward to the next step and the next video man

Maaaaate!!!!!!!!! This is my worst fear. I'm half way around Aust on a 1996 DR650 atm. I'm about as far away from home as I can be. The old girl has had some issues. I got rear ended by a kid texting east of Brisbane and spent 2 days in hospitaI. I then had to ride to Cairns with broken ribs and torn shoulder tendons. The bike is a bit bent and 2nd hand looking but still going. I needed a new cylinder, rings and piston in Cairns. A stator and reg/rec in Broome. Only once has it died on me luckily 2km from a truckstop/pub. Yes getting towed is super sketchy. Pulled the carby apart on the porch of the pub and it turn out the circlip on the needle had fallen off so an easy fix. Fingers crossed the 5th and then final legs of the trip are unremarkable. My two other DR650 riding mates are paranoid about mechanical failures and or injuries spoiling a great trip so we are being super cautious so far from home in remote northern W.A. I'm glad you got home safely and Sally is back on the road.

The first time was seeing Noraly aka itchy boots being towed after her clutch plate got burnt (that guy helping her get through that mud may/ or may not have contributed to it...). The best way to tow a bike is with a 21 inch tube between the two bikes footpegs. That way it doesn’t pull on your handlebars and there is plenty of spring in the tube.

That broken part is probably stuck under the intake valve. Push the valve down from the top with bike standing on the back wheel and it might fall out .

Hew-en-den spelled phonetically. Those road trains would be carting cattle, not a good place for your bike in one of those trailers. 53 meters long they can't turn around easily and are very top heavy. Good Suzuki dealer and mechanics in Hughenden too, I travel 430km round trip to take my bikes to be worked on there.

safer is for the front rider to make a few turns of rope on the peg. Best way to separate the bikes if there is a problem. just lift the foot to free the rope... And when shit hits the fan, Murphy's law can come too. so maybe better to keep gloves ;)

I spent a lot of time myself working out West in Qld in my younger days, and I can’t speak highly enough of those good down to earth Qld Country Folk who are, the salt of the earth, and will always go out of their way to help anyone, who is in trouble. Anyway mate, I reckon that you’ve handled a pretty crap situation about as good as anyone possibly could do, in the circumstances, and so now it’s onwards and upwards from here to get yourself home, and hopefully your bike will get there as well, soon afterwards. Chin up, as the old saying goes, ‘Shit-Happens’ and at least you have come through it unscathed, at least physically, if perhaps not so much, mentally, but as they say, ‘what doesn’t kill you, makes you older and wiser and tougher’ and as I, always like to say, ‘be thankful, for every small mercy, that comes our way. Thanks legend. Yeah I spent two days in Hughenden and was known as the guy with the broken down bike lol. I everyone was so nice. I know, it turns out it’s a common thing for high kilometre bikes but the damage mine sustained now that I have looked into it was pure bad luck. Ah well it’s all good now as you said. 👍
