Hello from Australia!!! I absolutely agree with your experience with Claire Austin. I grow her as a weeping standard so I get the beautiful fragrance at head height - right where you need it to be!!! Mine is now going on 2 years old and has a 5 foot stem and everything just cascades down from there. I also cut and bring her into the house but the petals showering onto our dining table is so worth it!!! A lot of my David Austins I grow as standards as I rent so most of my beauties are in pots. My Abraham Darby had georgeous blooms this year but I would never had the space to grow him otherwise. Ditto Jubilee Celebration which along with Golden Celebration I also grow as standards. I also have Boscobel, the Squire and Lady of Shallott, all standards in pots, surrounding our potager. Thank you too for your reviews. Even though the way David Austin markets his products out here is really different { we don't get to grow Tottering-By-Gently or Generous Gardener or even Lady Emma Hamilton. For shame about that one!}, I have had success growing a lot of the older , discontinued stock like Molineux and Belle Story. And I find myself tuning into your knowledge as every rose grower has something to contribute and we all learn!!! Cheers, Liz.

I am sorry if I repeat a question that may have been asked...wondering how wide Claire Austin gets? How much space does she need in the garden, please?
@the_gardenerben Жыл бұрын
That very much depends on how you grow it as a climber. She reaches around 8 feet high and around 8 feet wide, but it’s not a very tidy climber more of a fan shaped Bush, I grow mine on an obelisk. You could also use a singular post and loosely tied in a comfortably reaches 8’ x 4’ wide.

I bought this. Bare root. I received in March 2024. I’m in zone 6a. I was worried when I received and planted because in March it’s still in the 20’s. It made it and I had my first bloom June 15. However, the bloom is no where near 3+ inches. It’s about the size of a quarter. I don’t know if that is normal for first bloom but I was very disappointed 😢
@the_gardenerben6 ай бұрын
Please don’t be disappointed a bear rose is never going to achieve it’s full size or display all of its characteristics in its first or sometimes even second season these are long-term investments this Plants going to be with you in your garden for up to 15 years and is going to need some time to establish itselfthe plan I’m displaying in this video here at the time of filming was around seven years old and standing around 8 feet tall Plants are going to need some time to establish decent roots systems which can intern support large plants. Please focus on your watering mulching and getting the plant established as the plant gain strength and size your size colour and even fragrance will be fully displayed in time.

Not to be treated as a climber, very interesting. I tried and perhaps this is why it didn’t work for me. For me the flowers were very flaccid from there weight. Pointing ground wards the whole time. The scent for me was very light. And any rain it killed it like you say.. it was only a year old but all those things for me with the roses I already have I’ve ended up donating it to my next door neighbour. Maybe with age she will have better luck. Great video again Ben and I’ve no doubt top info.
