I understand that Lady Emma was retired because it was not doing well and problems with British root stock's. Thank goodness I got my hands on some old dutch stock from a small nursery, and they are thriving . Living in Amsterdam I have noted that the German root stock's are much more robust from roses from the perfume collections like Constant Mosart. Perhaps David Austin should consider using those root stock to improve vigor And revive Lady Emma . Which I consider to be Austins most perfect rose

For me for some time now my favorite DA rose has been Princess Anne, and that's partly because the pinks hold the most interest for me. Eustacia Vye is also very tempting, as are really all the pinks. Gabriel Oak's color is slightly wrong for me and looks almost garish on the bush as seen in the DA garden. I see Emily Bronte didn't make the cut but I quite like its nuanced coloration. Thank you for this very current evaluation.

Glad to hear she is in your top 10!

What is the month for the second flush? I'm looking for roses that would flower well in July and August. All the roses I have currently, which are no name roses and a couple of Kordes ones, have very few flowers in August. I'm considering also planting perennials if I dont find the right roses. We don't have a lot of space or options, and Harlow Carr has been on my list of possible roses.

What a terrific countdown, thank you Gardener Ben. We're short of rose selection in NZ this year (Covid meant the overseas budders couldn't come into the country for two seasons) but it would be nice to think some of your favourites will reach us soon. At the moment we have most of your ranking 12-20 in the country, but none at all of your top 11. We received the 2017 new releases this year (Judy Dench and James L Austin). I wondered why you only talk in feet and inches? Is it for your US viewers? Even in the UK nobody under age 52 was taught imperial at school, and of course the rest of the world is entirely metric, so feet and inches are meaningless to us. Would be lovely to have a translation if you can squeeze it into your commentaries. Thank you, I enjoyed watching it.

Roses are remarkably tough and dispatched at the best possible time for your growing zone, my advice moving forward will depend on whether you’ve have unpacked, and started to rehydrate your plants If you are yet to unpack your roses, leave them in their original packaging and place them in a protective position, maybe in a garage shed or outbuilding. You can store them like this for several days without any problems and allow temperatures to even out. If you have already unboxed and you are starting the rehydration process again, you can do this in the cover of an outbuilding, but certainly not in the house Maybe consider covering them over with a sheet or overturned box just to give them a little little bit of protection for this weather moves through

I got Elizabeth this spring, so I've had her about 5 months. I'm in the US, zone 7b with super hot, dry summers. If you live in a similar climate, I'd recommended planting her in partial shade. I planted Elizabeth in a sunny spot with 9-10 hours of unrelenting hot sun. Big mistake. I may have to move it. While it is flowering and seems to be chugging along, I don't think it's happy with where I planted it as it's neighboring roses are doing fine (Scepter'd Isle and WOH). Also, just be aware that the blooms may open almost pure white with no pink/apricot tones in full sun/hot area. That all said, the scent is amazing and she makes a good cut flower for me.
@vorong2ru Жыл бұрын
i double that , also the blooms don't last more than a day in the full sun while you can have around 3 days in a shady spot. I have it in the spot where it only gets 2hrs of morning sun and 2 hrs of the evening sun and it seemed to be happy and gives vivid pink flowers.

Sounds like my climate. Which DA roses thrive for you?
@elsiemari9 ай бұрын
@@Kim-jj9yd Wollerton Old Hall, Scepter'd Isle and James Galway have done really well. Their heat tolerance and winter hardiness are excellent and they are SO healthy. I've found the own root DA roses do best for me as well. 🙂 If you are in the U.S., I'd suggest not ordering the 2-quart potted roses from DA. They are incredibly tiny and none of them came through winter.

Thanks Ben for your annual recap. I always look forward to your review and the information you share. I know I can trust your opinions, and then see which new roses I can add to my garden from your recomendations. Great work, and love your channel. Ted

Thank you for your recommendations 🌹 I’m absolutely loving seeing the roses to be inspired to what I want for my garden. I’m a little confused though. Elizabeth is in one of your other videos recommended for pots. In this video it’s presented as a big rose. Do you still recommend her for a pot? Best regards Stine 🇩🇰

@@stinepetersen9552 hi and thank you for your comment. Elizabeth is obviously a very new variety and although has now had its full personal review mine is in a pot due to when it arrived and the fact I had nowhere else to put it. It’s not in my best for containers collection but it can be grown in a pot as long as your container is large enough most people don’t have space for the container the size that I have my growing in and the plant will reach at least 5 feet on top of its container

Thank you so very much for your answer. I will reconsider Elizabeth for my pot (42 cm wide and 56 cm tall). In your ten recommend roses for pots, there’s several more beautiful ones to choose from. 🌹 Again thank you so very much for your answer and for all your amazing advices and videos. I’ve just recently started seeing some of them and they all inspires me. 🌹

I love all your roses and all your reviews. If you could only have one, which one would you choose?
@the_gardenerben10 ай бұрын
I’m sorry I couldn’t narrow it down to just one. It would have to be bring me sunshine, Silas marner and the lady Emma Hamilton
@mangotango570410 ай бұрын
@the_gardenerben Thank you, Ben. Silas Marner is now in my garden, and I'm ordering Bring Me Sunshine today along with one more Silas Marner. It will take a hunt to get Lady Emma. I truly appreciate all you do. ❤️

Ben, thanks for all of your reviews, they are really useful. You did convince me to get Emma Hamilton last year and i'm so pleased I actually have it. It's the best rose in my garden in terms of scent and overall bush look. Keep them videos coming, happy to see more reviews and top-10s for smth:)

Amazing, I’m so pleased for you it’s an utterly fabulous rose really only sliding down the top 20 because it’s becoming so difficult to get hold of now. Enjoy it

Very nice review, wish you had included growing zones, had to google each to see if they were able to be grown in my garden. 😩 maybe add in the description? For others… maybe I should’ve done it in this comment! Sorry everyone!

I’m sorry that you didn’t find the information that you required. However, I believe I’m offering a huge amount more information experience and detail in every single video. I produce than any other person producing this kind of content, these videos as you can expect take up a massive amount of time, energy and personal resources none of which is paid for by anybody. This is free content, the biggest suggestion I can make to you is if the rose is for sale in your region it is suitable for you to grow. These are English roses, grown for an English climate. Only certain varieties are released into worldwide production that can handle the growing conditions in other countries.

Growing zones and other pertinent information is always available on the DA website. Ben gives an abundance of information, spending a great amount of time making videos, and all for free. The least we can do is find the growing zone for ourselves.

I love my Bring Me Sunshine. I planted it in a big terracotta pot as a bare root last Autumn. The first flush of flowers were the lovely rich warm yellow of yours, the second flush started off a very definite orange gradually fading to pale yellow (which was a bit odd and a little disappointing) the third flush we’re back to yellow and it’s producing a fourth flush of blooms now that are tight buds. I hope it flowers yellow this time. It has produced four very tall canes that have lots more thorns on them compared to the rest of the bush. They’re about four feet tall. Is this normal for this rose please? I’m in Hampshire U.K.

It sound’s completely normal yes,

Hi Ben just a quick one to say how much I love your channel and your top results especially seeing that you have ranked one of my best roses from my own garden here in Liverpool at number 16 😊 she flowers for me straight out of winter and into early spring right through till the hardest frosts she has never let me down over the last 6 summers of having her😊 now please don't take offence Ben but I must slap your wrists on your pronunciation of her name, you are correct in saying she is named after my club Wolverhampton Wanderers Stadium Molineux 😊 but it is pronounced as Mol-in-you as I say please don't be offended 😊 Thanks Ben Maureen from Liverpool but a season ticket holder at Wolverhampton Wanderers FC xx

Thanks, Ben. I’ve been watching your videos since I decided to jump the gun and buy my first 3 DA roses (Wisley 2008, ORA, and LOS). They are just about to bloom in my Aussie sun topical garden. Can’t wait to see and smell their blooms! I’m keen on adding more to my collection next year. Definitely appreciate knowing which one’s cope better with extreme weather conditions. 🙏🏽

Well come along I produced a drought tolerant selection best of the video last year. Obviously our heat in the UK is nowhere near what you will be experiencing in Australia but it may be a good starting point for you it’s here to watch at any time

@@the_gardenerben I think I found them on the English Amazon; vitrea mini glass vases? They look close to what you use. I'm getting a bring me sunshine for next year, pretty excited. Keep up the good work and wishing you a lovely 2024

Good afternoon and thank you for your comment. Welcome along there’s so much here for you to watch and catch up on May I make the suggestion that you start with my best for drought and heat tolerant selection obviously the temperatures here in the UK are rather cool in comparison to what you are experiencing, but it will give you a good solid pointer as to which roses will grow best in your climate, if I can help with anything, don’t hesitate to ask
